I think you hit the nail on the head. I can only really speak anecdotally but, from my experience I've noticed that 5e games can become more like a creative writing group with some gameplay elements thrown in. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but there definitely needs to be a stronger understanding at the table of what kind of game is going to be run. If it is going to be more narrative focused that's fine, but the GM will need to handwave some of the rules and make some concessions as a reference guide. But if the game is more mechanics focused, then the narrative will have less of a focus. And if you have a bunch of players that wrote 10-page long backstories the experience will be hindered for them. Burnout comes by a lot faster if you're trying to be both story teller and rules judge. Also 5e has very few rules that allow the GM to feel like they're a player at the table to. And I think this is all exacerbated by the fact that as 5e has become so popular, professional actors and gamers are creating series that strike that perfect balance between story and game design. Brennan Lee Mulligan and Matthew Mercer are amazing, but it is not wise to compare yourselves to their abilities, and I think a lot of people do that. And finally, GMing an epic 5e game with all the correct rules and in an exciting world is very hard and taxing (as you said). So prepping a 5e game is quite an ordeal. The OSR community is flushed with GMs because at the end of the day it's just so much easier to say "hey do you want to play an RPG this weekend? Great, come by and we'll get started."
