I've probably mentioned this before, but when I'm working I always need to have something on in the background. It can be music but more often than not it's a show or a Youtube video.  And as a Youtube regular I end up watching a shameful amount of top ten lists.  When I saw one this weekend featuring the top ten best animated openings I think Jem and the Holograms was number three or something.  And between the crazy hair and the bright colors and the eye make up, she just looked like a fun change of pace to draw so here she is!

I admit I'm not terribly familiar with the show, though I did catch a few episodes here and there as a kid.  It was clearly aimed at girls but hey, before the internet came along you just watched what was on.  As a lifelong fan of animation I can say it certainly had one thing going for it though: the characters looked like people. It may sound strange but in modern TV animation that's a fairly rare trait.  There's just so much competition to stand out that most artists for these shows make their human characters so stylized they're practically abstract in appearance.  But you think about those 80's shows like Jem and He-Man and GI Joe, and the human characters all had relatively realistic proportions.

But I'm not going to lose sleep over this one lol.  I'm well aware that I'm hardly the target audience for new animated series or how they design their characters.  And if I get nostalgic there's nothing stopping me from tracking down the old shows online. :)

Thanks! Drawing this made me feel like I need a character with big hair like this lol.

If "Jizz on the Holograms" isn't already a trademarked porn parody name, it should be. I'll get my people on it right away! XD

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNDDDD my pledge to Patreon is officially worth it, two seconds after I made it :). I loved Jem back in the day- I was a guy, so I had to make it my secret shame to hide from others. But hey, I shouldn't have needed an excuse- it had the hottest girls on '80s TV!
