EDIT: Originally in panel two, Abbey's reaction was a bit more teary-eyed and emotional. After thinking it over, I feel like that made the final panel seem a bit too mean-spirited.

My thanks to Anne for the question! And if you have questions of your own for the cast, let me know in the comments!

For newcomers, I want to be clear on Abbey's mom: believe it or not, homophobic isn't the vibe I'm going for. Paige is more like stubbornly, blindly overprotective. She sees Abbey as small and frail, and believes that she needs a big strong man to look out for her. She wouldn't appear to be completely off base in that assessment, in Abbey's case. As from the outside looking in, Abbey does appear to need personal bodyguards just to function in her daily life. I'd be curious to know how this exchange came across to you before I explained it here. Hope you like the strip, in any case, and that you guys are having a good Monday!

This one would be for the Twins. Either one would do. The greatest question of them all. What is their preferred part on a lover? The boobs? The ass? Or the thighs?

Question for Elianna, who's her favorite tentacle monster? And Question for Casey, what are her plans for after high school?

Question for Sylvia what’s the best milf tip that she can give Bria?

I'd say she comes across less homophobic and more heteronormative and 'traditional'. Which isn't exactly better but it's not inherently worse either. Both aren't great but I get that sense that it's a deliberate flaw of the character and if that's the case you're accomplishing it quite well!

Would love to see any of the moms in your universe giving tips on how to pick up hot MILFs.

I'm really sorry to say this, but I find Paige does give off a homophobic vibe thus far. I realize that isn't the intent, but I also realize that "old fashioned" is often (but not always) used as a polite way to call someone a bigot. Maybe it's because we haven't seen a lot of positive interactions between Paige and Abbey, but (to me) Paige feels like she's trying to justify her bigotry to herself with her protests of Abbey needing a man to protect her (protect her? from what? are hippopotami native to the Castlewood region?) . I realize I'm in the minority on this, but this sort of thing is what the comment section is for: commenting.

For me that wasn't homophobic at all, but more like traditionally stubborn mom - she wants grandchildren in the first place, no matter what. If that was mentioned in panel three aside from husband (like - i want a chance to spoil my grandchildren being in age when i still remember, what went on yesterday...), i think that should be clear almost to anyone. But it might not be the way the story is being aimed. Seems to me that many people look primarily for homophobic, awful times.

Squid does have a point, there was moment where I also thought "god damn this woman a lil homophobic" but I'm starting to think that while she may just genuinely be traditionalist and wants the "strong man" to protect her rather sensitive daughter, I'm also beginning to realize that maybe instead of homophobic she's just manipulative and traditionalist and that combination makes it SEEM as though she's homophobic.

It’s interesting how somewhat contradictory her mom’s beliefs about sexuality are.

Paige repeatedly having to say "But I'm not homophobic!" is just making her seem homophobic, lol. I mean, I get her point- that she's old-fashioned and wants a "Big Strong Man" to take care of weak lil' Abbey. Buuuuuuuut why not try to push her towards one of the twins instead? pushing her towards DEREK, who seems like he's not gonna live to see 20, is just weird. Also, Paige is lovely. I would love to see more of her. PS if she's so obsessed with a man taking care of everything, why did she not remarry, and why is she just joining the "Has group sex with the mechanics" crew?

Squid Hills

In my opinion, if Paige went from "Marry a man because strong man protect weak woman" to "Marry a man because I want grandchildren" she'd come across much more in line with how Rein seems to want to portray her. Not homophobic but also kind of not smart enough to realize that adoption exists.

Hey for sure! I personally think one of the most important aspects of storytelling is having your finger on the pulse of author intent vs reader perception. Though even if it wasn't what I was aiming for, in this case it's probably alright story-wise if she comes off a little homophobic, for now, anyway, as it's obviously not being shown in a glorifying way and is clearly intended as a character flaw.

Reinbach

That's certainly more like what I had in mind, for sure. We haven't seen the last of Paige in the comics though, this will be addressed for sure.

Reinbach

I imagined because she'd yet to meet a man in Castlewood that she perceived to be manly enough compared to her late husband. XD
