Not the first time I've drawn Starfire here, but she came up on the Discord server the other day, and I realized I'd never drawn the classic "big hair" version of her from the old comics. I decided to directly parody one of the pics that popped up in the channel, and this was a lot of fun to make.

You'd be forgiven for assuming she was where I got the inspiration for my own OC Holly Sinclair, as this is basically Holly's head with a palette swap and the braces removed, but it's just a coincidence I'm afraid. I just love me some big hair. I do like Starfire though, as she has a very interesting history in pop culture overall.

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall back in the early 2000's during the meeting where whatever big shots at Cartoon Network decided that Starfire would make a good addition to their upcoming kids cartoon. It's my understanding that Starfire in the comics has pretty much always been (and I say this admiringly) one of the biggest hoes in the entire DC universe. She makes out with men she just met to gain their knowledge, and gets the ability to see into the future by consuming their sperm.

Putting aside that I made that last part up, how do you adapt someone like that for a kid's show? Change her completely of course! But did they though? This is where you guys can help me out, as I think the only comic I own featuring the Teen Titans was the collection they did in like the 70's where they crossed over with the X-Men. So the question is did they change Starfire drastically for the cartoon? Or was she always a lovable naive fish out of water anime girl type, and they simply removed the intergalactic hoe-ing from her profile? Let me know in the comments if you would, and I hope you guys like the pin up!

I watched a good bit of the Teen Titans show and they had Starfire be basically exactly what you said. Just a fish-out-of-water character played mainly for laughs. I didn't really know about the the comic hoe-ness until I looked her up more.

The was pretty touchy-feely emotional in the show, but in a kid friendly way and mostly as a contrast to the closed off Raven. I think they tried to make her more shameless in nu52, but that her time during the Marv Wolfman era was maybe made out to be more than it was? Either way, love the art.

Best Starfire ever! Totally hot. :D

Amazing

They didn't change her drastically so you're kinda right. Although DC has been trying to move the character away from her sex appeal and more fan service aspects of her character recently, which is a shame

Nice use of back grounds

She wasn't really supposed to be a hoe persay, she basically loves everyone and in her culture physical intimacy isn't just shared between individuals. She was more really positive and conciliatory and was a great balance in the Teen Titans. The very sexual aspects of her were actually more reserved for her on again off again boyfriend Nightwing. During the 52 rebrand they made her a hoe. It was a really shitty contraction of her character to that of vapid alien hoe.

Always was a fan of the tall beauty star fire awesome illustration!

she's not so much a hoe but more "comes from a culture where intimacy isn't that taboo" plus being a former slave from space means foreigner fish out of water syndrome hijacks socially especially when she has the power to learn languages through lip to lip contact

Like others have said, Starfire was pretty much always a fish out of water, though her learning of languages thru physical contact isn't exclusive to kissing, it's just a method she enjoys. The best modern take on her now is the 12 issue series that Amanda Connor & Jimmy Palmiotti wrote.

Just in time for the new look from Titans : https://static1.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Titans-season-3-Anna-Diop-Starfire-costume.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=740&h=740&dpr=1.5

Wow. Don't get me wrong the actress is hot but that costume is...something?

ScuzzBucket

HELLZ YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Great proportions and breast shape! It's fun seeing how your new "eye style" fits with someone who doesn't have any pupils. I love the "Who's Who" dynamic of her page here, complete with "minor snippets of the character's life" bits now including her getting jizzed on, lol. This is just terrific.

ScuzzBucket

Oh yeah, that book was EXCELLENT. I actually found her "swimming top and boy-shorts" look incredibly sexy, too.

Reinbach

I imagine a lot of people introduced to her through the cartoon were in the same boat!

Reinbach

For sure, I don't think they needed to toss that aspect of her completely, just tone it down a bit is all. XD

Reinbach

A vapid alien hoe sounds great on paper, but I'll agree it's NOT so great when they take a character that initially had more nuance and devolve them into hoe territory. If they wanted a hoe in new 52, they should have just made a new character.

Reinbach

For sure, I have no doubt it adds up that way in the lore, but I also think the writers knew what they were doing when they gave her that cultural background. XD
