The US version has a lot tighter, quicker editing, and it also makes it more clear how the parts of Fantasia represent his grief over his mother's death. The Swamp of Sadness will drown you if you succumb to the depression. Morla the Turtle has gone numb. Gmork the Wolf is his rage. The Nothing is a loss of imagination. "It has to hurt if it is to heal." When Bastian gives the Childlike Empress his mother's name, he's making peace with her absence and understanding that she will always be his mother.
