It’s funny how we all consume media so differently. To me, this show wouldn’t work if I didn’t like Walt on some level.

Dk

Honestly stop the show right now if you're already not rooting for Walt even a little bit. He's the protagonist of the show. You're going to hate the rest of it.

David Dotting

I'm curious what it is about Walt at this stage in the show that made you still want to root for him? I'm hard pressed to find redeeming characteristics for him.

I don't really understand this thing where you have to find the main character "likeable". On the one hand I think you all are getting who Walt is straight away, and a lot of people don't. He's a bad guy. That doesn't mean the show isn't really interesting and fun to watch. In fact, Walter White is following the Tony Soprano blueprint which isn't the only show to follow it.

i know it's late but yeah, there is so much more nuance with walt then you are giving him credit for. the peanut butter sandwich scene is so interesting, it's not an evil guy making an evil sandwich, its a tortured soul contending with his sins while taking on the attributes of his former victims (cutting the crust off). walt is very dynamic and i hope you don't overlook that because you have labeled him as just straight up evil lol

the burnt teddy bear definitely represents a dead child

Walt has not committed "multiple murders" at this point. Emilio and Tuco (Walt wasn't even the primary reason for Tuco's death, though he played a part) were 100% self-defense. As for, Crazy-8, he has a solid case considering Crazy-8 showed a clear intent to kill him before and was in the process of pulling out a weapon when he was unlocking the bike lock. Self-defense is not murder. As for Jane, you could argue that it was a murder, but you could also give a compelling case that it was merely involuntary manslaughter. There was no mens rea when he flipped her on her back and he froze with indecision when he did not flip her back. He did not decide to let her die. He ran out of time while he could not decide. Keep in mind that, in New Mexico, there is no duty to give medical aid. You can criticize him for being indecisive, but it's certainly not a clear cut murder. Not defending Walt though. What he did was bad, but too many reactors treat that scene like it was black and white. There was a ton of nuance there.

The Film Effect

I agree for the most part, but he did decide to let Jane die. That’s the whole point of the scene and why it’s such a big moment.

Seriously George, how dare you try to objectify and categorize us baldies.... you with your luxurious raven locks! You just don't know the struggle!
