I finally thought of a 90s I like and think you guys might enjoy. Bad Boys (1995)

You should watch the movie "Belfast" that came out a couple of years back. Its a very charming family movie that does deal with some challenging themes, I believe that you both would love the film. It also a semi autobiographical film about the film's directors childhood.
