I think one thing I loved about the book was Mike interviewing townsfolk of Derry and confirming that Pennywise was present during some of the worst atrocities in the towns history.

You mentioned how striking the opening scene was, of the gay bashing at the carnival, and again later about how people almost seem like a bigger monster than It. That's a good reading, because that's based on a true event. The real-life murder of Charlie Howard in 1984 was the inspiration for that scene in the novel. It happened almost identically. Stephen King has said that the sheer brutality and callousness of that crime was more horrifying to him than any of the monsters he could create. He included it because he couldn't think of anything else that so perfectly encapsulated the pointless cruelty of humanity.
