Sucking out venom. It is a myth of a very simple origin. Not all the bites of venomous snakes are actually venomous. Sometimes snake simply bites you without trying to kill. People tried to suck out the venom out of the blood. And there was none. So they were sure that it works. In fact it has no real effect. But it was proven only in the second half of the 20th century. Ropes against snakes - pure superstition. Snakes can cross the rope. But that was the thing at the time. Snakes generally do not want to go to human sleeping place because thay have nothing to do there. LaBoef and Rooster are both Сonfederates. But LaBoef was serving in classical military unit while Rooster was one of Quantrill's Raiders who were acting guerrilla style. They were attacking towns and farms. They were killing men, stealing horses, etc. That's why they were considered as outlaws by Union and some of Confederates (LaBoef included). On the other hand LaBoef was in Shreveport under command of Kirby Smith. The only major event for that army there was their surrender. The whole movie is the story about price which we need to pay for our wishes to be granted. Every decision heroes are making is leading to consequences. Chaney is killing man and stealing gold but facing Cogburn LaBoef and a girl to track him as a payoff. Girl gets her vengeance but the very shot she makes throws her to the cave with snakes. And so on. Because there is nothing free except the Grace of God.
