Giving the fact that this movie was competing with TITANIC it won the Best Adapted Screenplay and the actress Kim Basinger won something as well. Out of Time 2003(Denzel Washington) & Strange Days 1995 are some noir movies.

Russell Crowe really shines when he's partnered with a dynamic actor. Paul Bettany in Master and Commander, Denzel Washington in Virtuosity, Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator, Guy Pearce in this, and Ryan Gosling in The Nice Guys. BTW, I really hope you guys watch The Nice Guys (also with Kim Basinger) soon (and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang by extension).

For more noir, watch any Billy Wilder movie. Even his comedies are top tier. Also "The Sweet Smell of Success". It's a noir that's not about murder, but with the sharpest dialogue I've ever heard in a movie. Also, both Kurosawa and Orson Welles both made noir movies; Stray Dog, and Touch of Evil, respectively. Both are fantastic.

Shame on you for not knowing who Lana Turner was. Separately, Lana Turner was dating gangster Johnny Stomponato… one of the many real events that were used in this movie… Mickey Cohen being taken down, the LAPD running an illegal brute squad to beat out of town gangsters and drive them out… the bloody Christmas incident… the Night Owl Murders… these were all real events

You might not remember this but Lana Turner was mentioned in kill Bill vol 2 as the reason why Bill loved blondes. Also that little end piece was probably to give people a hint that that actor guy was gay and since Kevin Spacey was very close with this guy he was probably gay too I think.

Bloody Christmas, in which a large group of officers and detectives attacked a group of Mexican-American (and two white) suspect who were already in custody, actually happened although no reporters were present and LAPD officials managed to keep it under wraps for several months. Jack Vincennes was technical advisor for a television show about the LAPD. In fact the show was called Dragnet and started on the radio in the late 1940s before moving to TV in the 50s, where it lasted until the mid-1970s. The main character was Joe Friday, played by Jack Webb. He narrated and played the role in a monotone, with the catch phrase "Just the facts, Ma'am." Mickey Cohen was a real gangster who ran organized crime in LA until he was arrested and convicted, and the LAPD organized a "goon squad" to kidnap and beat up his associates or others who tried to take over his operations.

This movie has one of the best scenes in combining music in scene that isn't part of the soundtrack with the actors actions: when Bud saves the rape victim and kills her rapist/kidnapper. The music of the show the rapist/kidnapper was watching is chefs kiss perfect for that scene. Especially when Bud slowly approaches the rapist/kidnapper before killing him. Great for building tension and the anticipation of what you knew what was about to happen.

The modern noir to react to is Memento, also starring Guy Pearce. Brilliant movie, great reaction potential. And it’s from Christopher Nolan, so it should appeal on YouTube.

When Exley takes the call it’s not that there are no cops on duty. Those are detectives not beat cops. Uniformed cops would still patrol and they’d call some one at home if it was bad.

A great follow up would be The Nice Guys starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. Similar dynamics except it’s a comedy set in the 1970s. Crowe and Pierce (and Simon Baker) were stars in Australia before this came out but this was their American break. Basinger was definitely the biggest star at the time, even Cromwell and Spacey were seen as character actors.

Fantastic movie! I'm very glad that I watched the reaction with you both. I didn't know anything about this movie at all! I went in completely blind. I didn't even know the whole cast before I started it up. This was a great movie though! One that I wouldn't of enjoyed as a kid - when this came out. I'm very happy that I watched this as an adult. I'm thinking that's why, yeah. They wanted the pretty lady on the cover. I got funky vibes from the villain cop - but I didn't suspect him! Once it was shown that it was him a "DUH!!" moment dropped. I super enjoyed the way this was filmed! I'm ALL for watching more film noir on here! Back when I was in highschool I took a class called Film As Lit for my senior English class. In that class we watched a ton of amazing films and movies. We covered noir films and it was really cool. xD I'm rambling but I'm also writing this at 3:26am after I finished the movie. Yeeeeeesh. I'm gonna get some shut eye. :)

Great reaction! This is a classic late 90's flick of a movie that no longer gets made. Smart and entertaining, with a lot of mystery, twists, and turns. Also, agree with George, Spacey was a great actor, and he threw it all away being a scum bag. But we can still appreciate his work in some ways.
