Hello again, Lindsay! The only sin of his in my eyes was his lukewarm reception to to one of my brother’s alma mater’s most beloved eateries: the Triple XXX in West Lafayette. I guess putting peanut butter on a burger is just a step too far for the Mayor of Flavortown.

That was great. Thank you for putting so much time into a history of the cultural impact of Guy Fieri.

Really enjoyed this. I've been a fan of Fieri for a long time, and it's because of a similar thing as what you mentioned at the end with hospitals. In 2009, I was in the hospital for an extended period of time, recovering from H1N1 and ARDS which resulted in a six-week long coma. And the recovery was grueling, lonely, and I was quite literally trapped in a hospital bed. The only thing I could bear to watch was Food Network and especially DDD and Good Eats. Most other shows were hard to follow, as I was still struggling with staying conscious and keeping my thoughts in order. And worst of all: they were boring. I just wanted to look at food (I couldn't eat yet) and think about not being stuck there. The fake kitchens and staged storytelling of someone like Ina Garten made me inexplicably panicked. I feel like Alton Brown actually dropped his likeable, approachable Southerner persona (sometime after his divorce) and now has a more Bourdain-esque performance to his content. He's still a good host and cook, but I don't find him as engaging as I found him when he was wearing bowling shirts and doing skit-based food comedy. Fieri, though, has really never changed. There is comfort to be found in something that doesn't change.

Living in the UK I only really saw him in DD&D and while I enjoyed the show at the time it was mainly background TV. I never hated him but he did come across as an energetic brash American which isn’t for everyone at all times. Great video retrospective on him and the whole backlash culture.

I really loved this. It’s funny—I saw the video theme and immediately became curious as it was a topic I never considered. What you said about our lens warping is so true on so many levels, and I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and how confusing culture is becoming for me. This Dude, who feels so ubiquitous, is yet another person I took for granted, and is making me really think: how many of my opinions are actually mine?

THIS WAS SO GOOD!!! So grateful for you Lindsay!

In this video you end with talking about watching Triple D in the hospital during the deliveries of both yours and your cowriters children and that kind of hit an interesting note because that's exactly what my wife and I watched every day for a week in the hospital leading up to the birth of our kid.

The media playback was aborted due to a corruption problem or because the media used features your browser did not support - anyone else having this issue?

Absolutely loved this, your work is always thoughtful and often helps me articulate my own thoughts better. Thank you!

Great piece! As usual! Made me think of the Keanu renaissance, which was also kind of about snobbery, but in a different way

Good for that comedian! Standing up for Guy Fieri AND Nickelback. Why does everyone hate on Nickelback?

Omg Todd out of the shadows and on the street!

Jetstream

Wait wait, wait. This was real? Like, the hate was real? I thought people just liked giving him shit because he's the biggest dork the world has ever produced. But there was real antipathy behind it? Shit. That's stupid af.

Good to know he’s (last time I cared to check) out of the closet.
