How Three-Act Screenplays Work (and why it matters)

Following up on the (brief) discussion in the Hercules video about how three act structures create a conventional narrative in Hollywood movies. A screenplay having three acts is not just arbitrary, nor is it a myth - some of your favorite movies use it, and here's why it works.

This was a really excellent piece. For some reason it felt a lot tighter than some of your recent pieces.

Lindsay, over and over again, you help me to find new ways to love and appreciate quality storytelling. I cannot thank you enough for that. I'm so very glad that you do what you do.

This may be the most informative video I've seen you do. I'm positive I will be watching it multiple times in the coming years. I've gotten good at recognizing the Act 2 to 3 transition but am still working on 1 to 2. Recognizing sequences will be the advanced class for me!

I absolutely loved the three-act-structure section of the Hercules video, and this addendum was an excellent continuation of that. As someone who loves to write novels but has never taken a film class, your discussion of these topics always teaches me something new and fascinating and relevant. I appreciate it :)

This was so great! I wonder how many people you'll save from student loans with this kind of work. You're really putting out some great stuff <3

This is probably a stupid question but was the 3 act structure theory inspired by Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey? The sectioning and some of the parts seem very similar to me but I might just be wrong.

Can we get the script for this?
