To make this extra confusing, I’m just putting this all in one post.

First, the Truth of the Divine pre-order bookmark is NOT a giveaway - simply go to this online portal (https://read.macmillan.com/promo/totdpatreonpreorder/) provide proof of pre-order, and in a couple months you’ll get a PERSONALIZED (by me, so we’re clear) bookmark in the mail. This is available to patrons of all levels. Personalized within reason (no, I will not be transcribing portions of Moby Dick for you), so I can make it out to you, or to Josh Gad, or whatever.

This is only for Patrons, so while there will be one for the general public, that one doesn’t have personalized/signed bookmarks, so if you want in on this, make sure you use the correct link. (US/Canada only, sry :/)

Second: SMP gave me way more paperbacks of Axiom’s End than I know what to do with (and a few hardcovers to boot), so I’m going to give away about 20 personalized signed copies of those too. Because of Patreon’s TOS I can’t make it a raffle, so it has to be a “contest” of sorts. Soooo… uh… leave a comment below by August 25th explaining what is the best pop song about aliens. Why does “ET” by Katy Perry exist? Why are you like that, Kanye, and why am I still kind of into it? Have we figured out what "bathe my ape" means? I’ll pick 20 of you based on MERIT because that’s how Patreon makes us do it. (Also US/Canada only... sry :/)

Finally, for those of you who remember my “leave a comment to get killed in Truth of the Divine” campaign from a few months ago, I needed a lot more random, one-off names than I realized so I ended up using about 30 of your names, only about 8 of which “die” so don’t be surprised if your name randomly pops up as “dead CIA agent” or “member of hate group” (fwiw most of you are journalists).

Fargo season 2 made Children of the Sun an absolute banger of a space rock song to me

Tempist

Welp, guess Audio Book listeners lose out. Aw well, you already killed someone with my name. Looking forward to the book Lindsay!

Anonymous

Awesome!Shame the bookmarks aren't available in the UK, but understandable. Hope you're doing well, looking forward to reading the book!

Anonymous

"Space Lord" is at once an astoundingly weird turn for its band, and at the same time one of the most egregiously hooky alien invasion songs of all time.

Anonymous

Godzilla by Kesha is technically about a monster rather than an alien, but I feel like it should count because there's already a song about aliens on that album and because there are not enough songs about dating monsters.

Anonymous

The best song about aliens is not a pop song. It’s a rock song—specifically the KISS cover of “2000 Man.” …wait that’s more about robots. Uh…it still rules, and the Stones wrote it so it can’t be bad. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Bonnie Fiddis

Maybe not the best but my favourite pop song about aliens is probably Star Girl by McFly and not just because it has a Uranus joke in it 😅

Anonymous

"Praying to the Aliens" by Gary Numan because it's also about gay people or something? and has the line "They broke him down/Into a torn old queen/Living somewhere/Between dead and dying" which is amazing.

Anonymous

Technically the Killer Klowns from Outer Space were aliens and the song got stuck in my head 20 years ago and never quite left so...that's my vote.

Anonymous

Starman by David Bowie because I just found it on an article called "10 songs you didn't know where about UFOs" and that's hilarious.

Anonymous

Starman by Bowie fa sho. Because if there are aliens, you know you have to let the people boogie. It is a rule of life.

Anonymous

Best pop song about aliens? Well first, let me expand the genre of "pop" to encompass all songs that were ever popular, because what is pop anyway? Anyway the song is Come Sail Away by Styx, because it captures the core experience of an alien encounter: mistaken identity. Much like how UFOs are misinterpreted optical tricks and drunken hallucinations, the aliens of Come Sail Away are mistaken for angels. It's both a song and a journey, though not by Journey.

Anonymous

maybe it's a stretch but i'm gonna go with alien alien by nayutalien (the bang dream cover specifically) because i'm a full weeb and only partially proud of it

Anonymous

“Aliens Exist” by Blink-182… because I really don’t know any others.

Anonymous

“Velouria” by Pixies. It’s beautiful and all the Bowie options are already taken.

Anonymous

I’m not sure about pop songs, but can we talk about how Army of the Dead is a secret alien movie disguised as a zombie movie? Seriously. Two flying saucers are seen at the beginning over the facility transporting the zombie of origin. The zombie virus behaves much more like a parasite using a host body with its own consciousness, and the zombies have alien like language and even the ability to reproduce. Then there’s the scene in the Vegas casino where Dave Bautista shoots of a zombie’s head and it’s actually a robot! That doesn’t make a ton of sense if it’s a zombie, but makes a lot of sense if it’s a parasitic alien species. Also I guess the answer is anything by Ziggy Stardust, since he is a pop star who is also an alien? Or did I just say a bunch of meaningless nonsense?

Anonymous

"Blue (Da Ba Dee)" by Eiffel 65 is by far the best pop song about aliens. It has a crazy music video that is almost all bad CGI aliens. It's so weird but for some reason was a huge hit. It's so recognizable, that movies like Iron Man 3 use it to tell the audience that the setting is in the late 90s.

Anonymous

“Purple People Eater” from the late 1950s. Catchy and fun!

Elysia Fields

If we consider the Grim Reaper to be an alien, how about (Don't Fear) The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult? I need more cowbell!!!

Anonymous

Unmarked Helicopters by Soul Coughing. Because X-Files.

Anonymous

genius.com claims that one of kanye's favorite sneakers is called "Bathing Apes," though frankly I don't see how this doesn't make the lyric even more confusing and perhaps distressing

Anonymous

Does David Bowie's Loving The Alien count?

Anonymous

A Flock of Seagulls - I Ran is about Aliens right?

Anonymous

I vouch for Oops I Did It Again because even though the lyrics aren't about aliens the music video is and isn't that what matters at the end of the day

Todd in the Shadows

The best pop song about aliens is the Carpenters version of "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" (more on this later). Also did you still want my extra copy back because I forgot to give it to you last time

Anonymous

I'm very partial to the B-52's "Is that you, Mo-Dean?", which is about Mo-Dean, an interdimensional outer space being who presumably is involved in the abduction of the lead singers and then is used as an interplanetary taxi service to go to places the singer ain't never seen. (However, it isn't ever made completely clear if Mo-Dean is someone they meet on their travels and some other unlucky alien is the one who kidnaps the singers and becomes their space driver for a few hundred outer space years.)

Anonymous

Men in Black by Will Smith because we wouldn't get Vivid Memories Turn to Fantasies by Neil Cicierega without it.

Anonymous

omg Martian Girl by the aquabats. dude falls in love with spooky martian girl and the rest is history. extreme manic vibes, musically. i'll just paste my favorite portion of the lyrics below. enjoy She's got green blood Pumping through her veins She smiled at me and that's the weirdest part 'Cause this aliens teeth were razor sharp Why oh, why did she come from Planet V? But I don't know whoa whoa whoa Martian girl from Planet V Will you marry me? Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa She came from outer space She came to see if earth was good Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa In the supermarket she got distracted In the meat department Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa She's looking at me She's looking hungry I think she's gonna eat me Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa

Joel Keene

"Rapture" by Blondie is not only an artistic show of force, but has also shown to be 100% accurate so far

Anonymous

Alien boy by Oliver tree 👽

Anonymous

Englishman In New York. Sting admitted he's an alien. That was huge for alien community on Earth.

Anonymous

Starman by David Bowie! It was the lynchpin in an album at the hight of the man's creativity!

Anonymous

“Space Oddity” by Bowieeeeee. Makes me feel like I’m floating in space trying to talk to aliens. And I like that.

Anonymous

LIfe on Mars by David Bowie?

Anonymous

Clearly the best song about Aliens is Englishman In New York by Sting. Be yourself no matter what they say (oh, I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien)

Anonymous

Dude, David bowie "Loving the alien". I don't even really like it personally, but those lyrics are just *mwah* I uh, I don't have the answers to your other questions though.

Anonymous

"Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" by The Carpenters. It's very soft and comforting and I like that it uses a lot of many-syllabelled words that ripple well.

Anonymous

The best pop song I've ever heard about aliens is ET by Katy perry even though both Katy Perry and Kanye are kind of well not good people. Let me explain why though. I mean aliens in most configurations get stuck in your head and are either feared or loved depending on the depiction. Katy supplies us with both. The love being "infect me with your love" and fear being "fill me with your poison". It also deals with the foreign concept of aliens and basically its a good depiction of how we view aliens both real and fictious. Real meaning things that concepts we can't grasp as a whole in humanity and fake being like the ones in your books or the movies.

Anonymous

I don't know why there's a debate in these comments. The correct answer is obviously Blue by Eifel 65. It is also now stuck in your head. You're welcome.

Anonymous

I just pre-ordered the Audiobook a few days ago. Can't wait! As far as my song pick goes... "Believe It or Not" the theme song from "Greatest American Hero" Mild-mannered teacher gets super suit from ETs? Pure gold!

Anonymous

Ah, no way to enter the bookmark pre-order bonus outside of the US/Canada? In Scotland, UK, here; pre-ordered with Waterstones. I'd be happy to cover shipping! I know *shockingly* little about commercial pop songs in general culture (video games and anime stuff is more my jam), so I may have had to use Google to assist me here, but I'll go with "Let There Be More Light" by Pink Floyd, because even though I just listened to it for like the second time, those guitar lines are a bit of an earworm! And the lyrics reference a bunch of sci-fi stories... as well as The Beatles. (Edit: And I guess that's not a pop song, but it's all I've got!) (Edit 2: Ah, just caught your US/Canada edits... out of your control, I imagine!)

Anonymous

Prob doesn't count but I'm going to say green day's American idiot for the a+ "alien-nation" pun and bc Billie Joe kinda moves like an alien

Violet

This technically isn't a "pop" song but I have to go with "Hello Space Angels" by the immaculate Sonny Eclipse, seen at Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe in Disneyland. The idea of invisible space aliens being backup singers is a) hilarious because they obviously didn't want to make more animatronics and b) quite sweet, because they're always there and you never have to be alone. We could all use a Space Angel or two by our side.

Anonymous

My favorite alien pop sing will probably always be "Man from Milwaukee" by Hanson, largely due to its late 90s/early 2000s nostalgia for me! It's a fun, upbeat song that is slightly satirical about the alien obsessionists who are able to gain followers with their dizzying logic that is difficult to parse and therefore difficult to deny thus drawing people to agree. Personally for me it also spoke to my feeling of being "otherized" at that age (6th/7th grade I believe?). I think that honestly is the lasting power of a lot of alien themed songs and stories; we identify with the alien because we feel that we have been placed outside of normal society. (I tried to insist to classmate for years that I was from Mars, its funny looking back.) As for Katy Perry's E.T. (I personally prefer the album version without Kanye) I recently watched a YouTube video that proposed E.T. and Dark Horse were reactionary songs to Lady Gaga's 'Dark Romance' which was a runaway hit dealing with darker, edgier visuals so that is one possible explanation for its existence. P.S. Good luck on pre-orders!

Anonymous

Might be a strange take but Englishman in New York is a brilliant celebration of what it means to be an outsider, an alien in the non-extraterrestrial sense, and the importance of remaining true to oneself. Written about Quentin Crisp, a queer icon of the early 20th century, it does a great job of highlighting the queer campiness of the British culture that rejected Quentin so violently in their early life: "it takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile" is all the more ironic for the fact that Quentin ultimately identified as a trans woman when she died. Plus it's an absolutely brilliant tune that masterfully mixes genre influences, which to me is a marker of good pop music.

Anonymous

Bit of a stretch, but I'm going to have to go with Pop Goes the World by Men Without Hats. It's a stretch because it's unlikely that it's actually about aliens, but when I was maybe 7 or 8 years old, my cousin and I became convinced the album was telling the story of an alien visitor that came to Earth and befriended Johnny and Jenny, and it inspired us to write a story based on our interpretation. Plus, you're already going to rightfully get plenty of David Bowie, so I thought I'd mix it up.

Angela

I Ran by Flock of Seagulls. It's literally about a guy who falls in love with a space alien chick and ends up getting beamed up with her into the spaceship. Best use of 80s synth pop since Chess the Musical XP

Kyle Rudy

Janelle Monae's Metropolis: The Chase Suite. Yes, the whole damn album. The aliens we are likeliest to meet are the ones of our own making, the ones wrought in our own image. I'm an alien from outer space (outer space) I'm a cyber girl without a face a heart or a mind (A product of the man, I'm a product of the man) The album is the story of her character's flight from bounty hunters who are paid to eliminate her for falling in love with a human. Monae's entire body of work (well, almost) re-imagines the civil rights era in terms of a futuristic android revolution, and the metaphor works. More importantly, it slaps. Edit: also, feel free to murder me in prose. I get lots of email meant for other Kyle Rudy's, and believe me, we're all jerks.

Andrew

The best song about aliens is probably Meco - Medley: Star Wars (12" Version) as it is 15m49s of the best disco/funk to have ever existed. And you know it's about aliens, because Star Wars. Although, there aren't words, per se. Other than R2's SCREEEEEEE.

Anonymous

SECONDED i know that's not how this works but this is the best answer and the rest of us are in a race for silver

Anonymous

"Come Sail Away" by Styx is the best song about aliens because * The fact that the characters are aliens is an out-of-the-blue, blink-and-you'll-miss-it twist that has no particular bearing on the rest of the song * It rhymes "on board" with "aboard"

Anonymous

Actually I'd say there's an entire pop album about aliens BY aliens. It's called The Worst Band In the Universe and it came with a picture book about a contest for the worst band in the universe and it had a couple of bops on it. It's fun because it's not a one off single but a concept album with beautiful weird art to go with it.

Anonymous

Best pop song about aliens? I dunno if this counts but I thought Aqua were actually extraterrestrial and that Barbie Girl described an off-world theme park or something. But I also kinda legit like the Iron Maiden Dune song, To Tame a Land. Does that count as pop, nearly 40 years later?

Anonymous

The first pop song that came to mind is “I ran” by flock of seagulls. May seem random, but I just watched a “one hit wonderland” on it and … well, yep

Anonymous

i'm gonna go with "Teleportation Blues" by Douglas Adams, which is a pop song in the Hitchhiker's Guide universe and has been recorded in this one by Mitch Benn

Anonymous

Signal by Twice because my roommate loves this song and it’s engrained into my subconscious.

Anonymous

Subterranean Homesick Alien by Radiohead. Great song. Great album.

Anonymous

I love that you asked the question about pop songs. In 1996, Garbage released a B-Side attached to the UK "Stupid Girl" single called "Alien Sex Fiend." I'm not gonna lie, when it comes to Garbage's B-Sides, the quality tends to range from haunting covers, to really good songs that don't make the album, to "Shirley and the boys fuck around and find out" and this song is VERY MUCH in that final category. However Alien Sex Fiend is also the name of a goth rock band from the 80's and 90's and they heard the Garbage song, so they did what any respecting goth band would do... and released a song called "Garbage" shortly after. This is my favorite story about rock bands trolling each other. Anyway, my favorite song about Aliens is Blondie's Rapture. I had that rap memorized when I was a kid.

Anonymous

I'd argue "Rocketman" by Elton John is a song about aliens, and it's become more timely than ever due to the renewed interest in space travel making people think about the potential downsides. Either that or "space boys" from Girls 5 Eva

Anonymous

Starman by David Bowie? That's been said already, right?

Anonymous

Idk Come sail away is pretty good and I want free stuff. I’m broke and in college and want to uncancel my favorite creator

Anonymous

The best alien pop song is called Beneath a Moonless Sky from Andrew Lloyd Webber's masterpiece, "Love Never Dies".

Anonymous

I don't believe anything has ever surpassed Men In Black, the Casablanca of alien pop songs. Instantly recognizable to anyone with wide appeal, plus it makes you think about Tommy Lee Jones which is always a plus.

Anonymous

Best song about aliens is absolutely "7th Element" by Vitas, because it is sung by a real life alien 👽🛸 He came just to give us this song.

Anonymous

Alien pop song? Check out Yohon's 1982 funky disco number "B.T. (Boogie Terrestrial" to learn all about "the first one of my world to get down / to get on down to that Earthly sound."

Anonymous

Ok, this isn't a pop song, and I live overseas so I'm likely not eligible for the contest anyway, but I gotta talk about it. Canción del Elegido by Silvio Rodríguez is my absolute favorite song about aliens or that mentions aliens. I hear it's supposed to be this metaphor about a leader of the Cuban Revolution or something, but at it's most literal, it's about this alien travelling across galaxies looking for 💖LOVE💖, who lands on Earth, discovers war, and goes like "you know what? Let's go". Last line of the song is literally (in Spanish) "(last time I saw him) he was killing scoundrels with his futuristic cannon." It's fucking batshit preachy (unintentional) camp, I absolutely love it.

Anonymous

I really like Alien by REZZ because it is so atmospheric. It really feels like exploring an alien space ship.

Anonymous

Rosetta stoned - Tool, wonderful tale of a man who gets high and is given a message (by an alien, of course) of hope for all mankind, or a warning to those who fail to heed it, except he was high at the time so forgets to write the message down. I feel like I could misinterpret it to be about Ampersand and Cora, if Cora had been like super high

Anonymous

My alien by Simple Plan because "She has two arms to hold me and four legs to wrap around me she's not your typical girlfriend, she's my alien." Also because - even with my bad, listening to simple plan, middleschool taste - i hated this so much. But I couldn't skip it or get it out of my head all day because the only choice is to listen to it in horror. It's like a 2000s carcrash, you can't look away.

Anonymous

I'm gonna go with "MK Ultra" by Muse because those weirdos probably believe there really are aliens farting around messing with us.

Raven Razor

Starship Trooper by Yes! It's got a beat I love while being an awesome scifi song~

Anonymous

"Earth Girls Are Easy" by Julie Brown Reasons: 1. The song's hilarious and so is Julie 2. It is one of the only alien romance songs out there 3. It was made into a movie in which Jeff Goldblum and pre-fame Jim Carrey / Damon Wayans appear as furry aliens.

Anonymous

The best pop song about aliens is Super Trouper by ABBA bc I didn't know it was a type of spotlight and always thought it was "super trooper" like a space trooper and was about intergalactic popstars doing concerts across the stars and honestly I think that still tracks with the lyrics.

Anonymous

Spaceman by The Killers, because it’s great to jog to.

Anonymous

Submitted for the promotion. Will there be something for me to put my requested personalization on within the coming weeks? (Hint: the book comes out the day before my birthday)

Kerstin Losem

Mulder and Scully by Catatonia. Not really about Aliens ... But Spooky Mulder will surely find one in the song, or black goo or clones.

Anonymous

Steven Universe is all about space rock aliens, which could turn any of their songs into a pop song by alien standards. Other than the main themes, I absolutely love "It's Over Isn't It" that's sung by Pearl!

Anonymous

Also, who doesn't love an eccentric Russian dancing while wrapped in foil?

Anonymous

I went with a different answer, as I immediately assumed everyone had already said this, but this was absolutely the first thing I thought of when I read the post. I still remember kids at school trying to sing this on lunch break. My goodness.

Anonymous

My little alien by Kate Nash because the chorus goes like this:My little alien, you picked me up You put a probe inside, my heart it flies You light up the sky Oh, you get me high You took the melancholy from my eyes You light up the sky

Anonymous

My Alien by Simple Plan (which isn’t pop but does pop punk count?) Anyway, he’s straight to the point that he is with an alien. She has four legs and he hopes to one day be fully abducted by her so they can live together on her planet. It’s a great, short time of a song.

Anonymous

Hanger 18 by megadeth. Mostly because it’s by megadeth, but also because the line “foreign life forms inventory” is the best way I’ve heard someone try and not call aliens, aliens.

Anonymous

Life on Mars by David Bowie! It's a full-on bop, and I like how it's sort of about aliens watching humans and dunking on them

Anonymous

I feel like Venus by Lady Gaga should totally count as an alien pop song because I have an obligation to force everyone to remember the album it came from lest they forgot the hot mess of Art Pop

Anonymous

I entered with my pre-order receipt for the audio book. Not sure if that qualifies.

Anonymous

Oh, and the best song about aliens is Let There Be More Light by Pink Floyd.

Scott DePouw

The Final Countdown by Europe. Applicable to so many situations in daily life, and is just a great tune.

Anonymous

"Signal" by Twice. While the lyrics of the song do not explicitly reference aliens, to divorce a K-Pop song from its video is to only look at the part of the work. The lyrics talk about wanting romantic attention from another. In the video, this another is an alien, with whom the girls of Twice are infatuated, trying to get his attention in all the sci-fi, MIB ways they know.

Anonymous

Obvs the Diva Dance from the 5th Element. Is it a pop song? Could I argue it's even about aliens? My 'meh, close enough' attitude is one of the many merits I bring to this merit based contest. Yours in merit, Aaron.

Anonymous

Lots of great options here but the best song about aliens is the Merry Melody "I'm a Martian" from the 2010s' Looney Tunes reboot. It's just so goofy and charming and Marvin's voice speak-singing makes me smile a lot.

Anonymous

The best song about/by aliens is Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush because she is not from this planet

Anonymous

I will not pretend I understand this song. But I would love an extra copy so I can keep lending it out to friends without worrying I’ll never get my copy back.

Anonymous

does "turn the lights off" by Tally Hall count? I'm sure theres a reading where you can see the monsters as aliens

Anonymous

*cries in UK* still pre ordering tho

BestowalDonkey8

My personal favorite is I Ran by Flock of Seagulls because it isn’t overtly about alien abduction but it’s totally about that it you pay attention. Plus it has a killer guitar solo and the kid was like 15 when he first recorded it. That’s impressive.

Anonymous

The best pop song about aliens is unequivocally "Man From Milwaukee" by Hanson, I may not be the first to say it but it's true. 😂

Tony Bonacci

obviously, Subterranean by Radiohead. cause its amazeballs.

Anonymous

Blue (Da Ba Dee) by Eiffel 65, because it was the only one my husband knew. Any song that manages to pierce his lack of pop culture awareness must have been good.

I know I'm out of the loop and probably dating myself, but "Yoda" by Weird Al changed my life. 😅 https://youtu.be/-IUMCyAR6U0

Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm. You have to admit, that song is a BOP. If you don't think Michael Jackson was an alien, then please explain the Father Son photo of him and ET.

Anonymous

Obv the best song by an alien is "Fields of Gold" from Sting *rereads post* Oh, *about* aliens. Nvm, I got nothing.

Anonymous

Happy to offer a K-Pop contender, Alien by Lee Suhyun, because it is like most K-Pop a total bop

Anonymous

So, awkward moment, Chrome may have autofilled a different email from my patreon one and I didn't notice bc of how similar they are. Are there any additional steps I need to take to clear up the confusion?

Andrew Duck

“Take it Back” by Miracle of Sound, cause it’s an awesome cross section of rock ‘n’ roll by MoS and Mass Effect. I love it, it rules and MoS is also a great content creator.

Anonymous

Weird Al's "Foil" video.

Anonymous

I'm going to go with Spaceship by Kesha. It's less about aliens more than alienation, BUT it's sung from the perspective of someone insisting they're an alien, and that one day a spaceship will come back to save them and then all the hurt they've suffered on Earth because they're an alien and they don't fit in won't matter because they'll be back with their own people, so it's close enough to being about an alien to count I'd think. It's definitely one of her less well-known songs but it fairly excellently captures the particular kind of perverted hope, I guess, that can come with certain really dark kinds of alienation, where you just sort of hope for the end because at least then you'll be free from whatever burdens your mind on Earth. I also just think the song itself is pretty nifty-sounding all in all.

Anonymous

LOL. Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley, just because it was one of the first. Although, I think Two Little Men in a Flying Saucer by Ella Fitzgerald might be older?

Anonymous

Gotta be Take Me Somewhere Nice by Mogwai. What would you do?

Anonymous

I Ran (So Far Away) by Flock of Seagulls. I was 12 when it released, prime pop music time for me and also when media was making me feel that nuclear armageddon was possible. So a song about getting abducted by aliens when you feel insecure about your budding attractions was great fun, and made the aliens feel like the best outcome! (Btw, real name is Craig Hunt, in case you need one for your story 😁)

I was looking up “Spotify songs about aliens” on Google to jog my memory (cuz otherwise I say Katy Perry ET like a pleb) but an OFFICIAL Spotify playlist lists Run Away With You by Carly Rae Jepsen and I’m like image “OKAY I GUESS.” with that. What a bop tho!

"Santa Beamed Us Up" by The Dead Deads.

Also yes use my name in your book please.

PerfectlyAdequate

If I thought about this harder I could probably come up with a better song, but my chances of winning are low enough that the first thing to come to my mind is the most effort I’m gonna give. The best pop song about aliens is Come Sail Away by Styx. Which yeah it may have just been the first one to come to mind since the alien subject is not subtext at all, but come on! That piano opening? Those massive Guitar riffs? Third example?? There is so much to love about this song, and I don’t know how anyone can listen to it without a smile. We live happily forever So the story goes But somehow we missed out On that pot of gold But we'll try best that we can To carry on

Anonymous

Muse's Starlight is a great song, and is supposedly about alien abduction. 👽

Anonymous

Aliens Exist by Blink 182 because I think that it is the reason Blink broke up in 2005 and kicked Tom out in 2015. Tom definitely believes in aliens and Mark seemed to kick him out of the band because Tom wanted more time for his book (also about aliens). Tom nowadays talk about aliens at Universities and tours for his band ΛVΛ but I think Tom truly believes he was abducted by aliens and mark doesn't believe him. just listen to the live version of aliens exist on the Tom Mark Travis Show album and its clear that Mark doesn't respect Tom's opinions about aliens at all and the time line show that both fight between Tom and Mark are correlate to when Tom is the most alien obsessed. And that's not just a theory but a music theory thanks for reading.

Anonymous

5 Years by David Bowie... except it is really about the earthlings, not the aliens.

Anonymous

The Purple People Eater, but specifically the Alvin and the Chipmunks cover.

My contribution to the contest that I'm considering a community project at this point is a Spotify playlist with everyone's submissions for best alien pop song, even the joke answers. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0F9A7GQIVGXyVMKc0FMIvM?si=dSezNFniRAS5G80XSnaDHg&utm_source=copy-link&dl_branch=1 I dunno if links are weird in comments or not so you can also search for "best pop songs about aliens" I'm gonna keep updating it until the deadline. It's been fun listening to everyone's songs.

Anonymous

Aliens Exist by Blink 182 is the best pop song about extraterrestrials because I have bad taste in music and very little shame

Anonymous

Iron Man, by Black Sabbath. He's like a more human Doctor Manhattan, and has more reasonable responses to things than the other famous Iron Man guy. Sure, that response involved causing the apocalypse he wanted to avert as revenge upon people not taking him seriously. But that takes commitment, drive, and talent. Who needs wishy-washy allegiances and friendships that change at the speed of whomever is working on this script draft, when you can have THAT iconic guitar riff backing you up? Sidenote: I don't think that form had space to specify personalization but I'd like it to go to my SO (her name's on the preorder receipt!), not me.

Anonymous

If only any part of the soundtrack of Koi... Mil Gaya qualified as a 'pop song' per se.

Anonymous

Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley. A catchy song with hidden depths, telling its audience that even a murderous monster from outer space can go onto a successful career in entertainment, never to be vilified again, if only they hold enough talent. Also it’s really fun to do silly dance moves to and the name alone has inspired many a zany ice cream flavor.

Anonymous

Starships by Nicki Minaj because of the multifandom starships video compilation on YouTube, and it just makes me feel uplifted and happy.

I hope I did the thing right. I just took a screenshot of my confirmation email 🤷🏻‍♀️ Also, there is a version of ET without Kayne. It’s marginally better.

“Ba weep grana weep ninny bong!” My entry for this contest is- The Touch by Stan Bush. It was used in the best Transformers movie - the 80s cartoon! Granted Transformers aren’t quite as organic as say, little green men, or grays, or whatever. But, they are sentient beings from another world. So to us, they’re technically aliens. And from a musical perspective, that song just bangs! I know when all hell breaks loose, I’ll be riding the storm!

I personally could interpret it to be about aliens, and maybe not a pop song but I’m gonna go with “princes of the Universe” by Queen. I think this one is already ridiculous due to its context as being part of the highlander soundtrack, but is made even funnier when you imagine the immortal/ non human protagonist of the song to be an alien who would like to dominate the universe.

Shiny Skunk

The best pop song about aliens is Subterranean Homesick Alien by Radiohead (for a loose definition of pop, anyway… it has verses and a chorus and a bridge!) because it gets that aliens, especially in a medium as short as a pop song, are most useful as a metaphor, in this case for existential loneliness and a longing for deep connection. I got my first tattoo of a flying saucer in honor of that song, I have a lot of strong emotions attached to it. 🛸🛸🛸 ET is also a metaphor for interracial sex, which the video makes pretty clear. I do not have as strong emotions attached to it but I do miss that era of music videos where all the women in pop were trying to out-weird Lady Gaga.

I'm probably getting DQ'ed but I nominate "Life on Mars" by David Bowie (who had extra terrestrial talent), as I interpret as a young girl/narrator wishing to get away from Earth because she's alienated from society. Yes, I went with that while "Starman" would be the more obvious choice.

Anonymous

I’m going with Come Sail Away by Styx. My reasoning is entirely based on hearing it for the first time when I was about 15 and I know there’s some theory or whatever about the songs you hear at 15 setting your music taste for all time but there’s a parody cover of the song where the singer goes “AND HOLY FRIG THEY WERE ALIENS” instead of “and they sailed into the stars~” and whenever aliens comes up, that line plays in my head.

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger from Daft Punk. A concept album of aliens being turned into pop stars on Earth. A perfect banger.

Starlight by Muse. Because it sounds awesome. Also because it is on the same album as Super Massive Black Hole, which means I’ll inevitably listen to it and get to think about vampires playing baseball. Win/win?

Best pop song about aliens? I'm gonna go with "Weapon of Choice" by Fatboy Slim. "Walk without rhythm, and you won't attract the worm" is pretty explicit, but you could also read the rest of the song as constantly referencing Dune and it's themes and characters. There are a bunch of other non-Dune references in there, but if you reeeeeally want to, you can pretty easily twist that song to make it all about Arrakis, sandworms, Fremen, spice, Paul's arc, whatever.

the best pop song about aliens is spin doctors' "jimmy olsen's blues" (1991), about jimmy olsen having a crush on lois lane and despairing because she's in love with the alien superman. i love it because he knows he is vastly outmatched, but he still believes in his love. the lead singer said, "no matter who you are, how good-looking you are, how strong you are or what nationality you are, somewhere in your soul there's a kernel of uniqueness, goodness and beauty. the pocket full of kryptonite is a metaphor for the gem at the bottom of every soul." and that is beautiful. everyone has something special inside of them that could fell even a superman. it's also a metaphor for his boner

It is so clearly “Rapture” by Blondie. The rap is iconic, the melody is somehow sexy and unsettling at the same time and Debbie Harry is a goddess.

Holiday by Green Day is obviously a story about Aliens invading earth followed fascist government rule being reestablished in the chaos. This song is told from many different perspectives. First verse "falling rain" and "armageddon flame" is the UFO's coming down to earth to declare war. The ones who died without a name are just like the people in New York who were pulvarised instantly in Independence Day. The second verse is just saying that the world lost the war with the aliens and that even the dogs are lamenting this loss. The chorus is alternates between people of the world lamenting their loss and then the aliens saying "This is the dawning of the rest of our lives on holiday" because to them this all means nothing and travelling to earth was essentially like taking a holiday but they think the planet is neat so they're gonna stay. The next two verses follow as some people still have some fight in them and try and protest the new alien rule, but then they find out "the money's on the other side" because even the government and the rich and powerful have submitted and bow down to our new alien overlords. A fascist government is established in america as the representative says "sieg heil" to the new president. Some countries still have fight in them like France, but to this, the American government communicates to the aliens who proceed to pulverize the eiffel towers. The protesters continue to fight back, with the LGBT+ community being a decent enough part of this that there's a line that says "kill all the f**s that don't agree". All these protesters declare themselves outlaws from this tyrannical alien government. The last chorus alternates between the two. The aliens/tyrannical american government and the outlaws of the world. "I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lives" - outlaws/protesters "This is the dawning of the rest of our lives" - gov/aliens And finally they all scream "this is our lives on holiday". For the aliens, this is their holiday. For the government, they get a holiday from not having total rule. And for the outlaws/protesters, they hope this is all temporary and this life they're living right now is only temporary and is essentially a really bad holiday. It's weird that Green Day chose to put an alien invasion song in the middle of an album about disillusionment with America and the invasion of Iraq.

"Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" is the best pop song about aliens because it may well represent the last bit of optimism that an encounter with aliens would unify us as a species rather than divide us. There are a million reasons to love Starman by David Bowie-- it is perhaps the most Bowie of the Bowie oeuvre, at least one of the most popular. the greatness of the chorus makes it well-known, but that catchy chorus distracts from a surprisingly thorough first contact event in the verses. Aliens hijack the radio to announce their presence, speaker calls friends and family of listener to converse about the aliens in the sky, there's even an implied backlash to the alien's peaceful message from an older, more militant generation.

Anonymous

wait thought of more stuff-- what I like most might be the way that the song kind of positions Bowie in the role of conduit for the Starman's message as the singer of the song to spread the news. This song has it all: the details of the first contact along with the undeniable boppiness of the tune surely make it the best song about aliens that exists.

Without a doubt, the best pop song ever is Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. Just hear me out: What makes an amazing pop song? It needs to be memorable, be performed by someone famous, should be something you can sing or hum to, and have an amazing music video, right? Sledgehammer checks out all of these boxes. The beat is amazing, a great imitation of rhythmically using a hammer, some amazing synths and the vocals... well, it's Peter Gabriel, but not on his usual rock setting but with a joyful, warm tune. The lyrics are full of plays on words and innuendos that are just demure enough to be playable on radio and fun enough to listen to. Peter Gabriel himself is well known to be a star, yet this hit brought him to the mainstream audience big time. His voice is just such a treat in this song, especially later in the song. It's good music on the popular scene, something that should always be celebrated. The video is a trippy delight of greeneries, faces and stop-motion animation, and to this day remains one of the most memorable music videos to date. It's just art that goes so sweetly with the song. Finally, would you sing this in the shower? Would it pump you up before a hard day? Is it relatable, be it for men, women, nb, or children? Yes, yes! It's just so great that I want to listen to it one more time.

Sweet Transvestite and I'm Going Home from Rocky Horror Picture Show. Yeah I know it's two but stick with me. What's so good about them is they manage to be about aliens in the cheesiest way while still not leaning on it as a crutch to drive the story, instead using it as an homage to classic cinema and t.v. while also being a fun excuse for all the wacky sci-fi callbacks and tropes. When I think of "Sweet Transvestite" I am aware that it's technically a confession that he is a being from another world, but it's also a poignant statement about how it feels to be unorthodox and even hyper sexual, which oozes through as it is delivered confidently and unapologetically by Tim Curry. I still get goosebumps when the elevator closes on that song. Later we get "I'm Going Home" which is, on its surface, about him returning to the planet "Transylvania" but in reality is his desire to go back to a place he feels wanted. Sadly instead, he is betrayed and misunderstood. His battle with his sexuality, his identity, and his darker nature is the undercurrent of a beautifully-made musical strung together by this wonderful explosion of sights and sounds as we go from bringing a sexy man to life (eventually eating meatloaf in more ways than one) just makes the entire experience *chef's kiss* and a well-deserved staple of modern pop culture.

My final decision is therefore for... Blank Space by Taylor Swift. Hear me out here. I'm not saying she's the best pop artist, I'm saying it's the best pop song. Reason for that is the song, while being very easy to go along with melodically, disects and deconstructs a fake persona created by the media about the singer herself and then chooses to make this persona the narrator of the song. That shows, one: an impressive self-awareness that was, to my limited knowledge on Taylor Swift the Public Figure, a contradiction of her previous public image as someone who acted with a rather cringey earnestness (see: Cringe, Contrapoints). Two, it demonstrates empathy as the song literally puts on the perspective of a fictional monster created by the media to control an artist. Three, while the lyrics perform a task that is, in my opinion, culturally and intellectually significant, it manages to be fun. Like, I want to sing along. I laugh at the lyrics.

Calling occupants of interplanetary craft (specifically the cover by the Carpenters) is definitely the best alien song. It’s based on an annual event dubbed “world contact day” (March 15, started in 1953) when people attempt to collectively communicate telepathically with aliens. Karen is one of the best vocalists of all time and the song is so fun! And obviously it’s working, and the aliens are on their way ;)

Gotta go with "Aliens Exist" by Blink-182! It gives a whole new layer of depth to an already-great album, by standing out wildly against the rest of the tracklist's themes of loneliness, heartbreak, (im)maturity and teen angst--all very "earthly" emotions and situations. The emotions tackled in the song clearly come from the same perspective and emotional maturity, but unlike nearly every other track which has something to do with love and/or sexuality, "Aliens Exist" is about teenage anxiety and paranoia, about the fear that the adults of the world are keeping the truths of the world from you--or worse, they're just as ignorant and clueless as you are. The truth is out there, but you're just a stupid teenager, and your knowledge of what's really going on will continue to be ignored.

Q: Best pop song about aliens? A: "Takin' Over the World" by David Russo, Kirk Thatcher, Michael McClure and David Friendly – as featured over the end credits of 1990’s Spaced Invaders (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmsBIRMwW0M). Q: Why does “ET” exist? A: It was an elaborate excuse to capture and preserve footage of donkeys, worms and macaques doing the nasty, on the presumption that if pigeons were predicted to go extinct by 2030, time was of the essence. Q: Why are you like that, Kanye? A: Uh… sorry, I’m not Kanye... Do I remind you of Kanye? Oh dear, what does that say about me? I probably need to rethink some things. Q: What "bathe my ape" means? A: This was an inside joke referencing an incident in which Katy Perry saw no harm in sharing a candy bar with one of the macaques during the climactic mating shoot, only for it to rub the caramel into its fur as though it was shampoo, causing a production delay until the crew could give the poor animal a bath. Of course, the lyric should have been “bathe my monkey” since true apes are tailless, but this is Kanye we’re talking about.

Best alien pop song: An Awful Lot of Running by Chameleon Circuit First, it's about Doctor Who, a show all about aliens! Second, the chorus is a played up version of the Doctor Who theme song, which we love to hear. It also has just enough rock to make it a banger.

"What is the best pop song about aliens?" Slime Creatures from Outer Space by Weird Al, nothing comes close, and it's criminal that Independence Day didn't use it. "Why does “ET” by Katy Perry exist?" Because she kissed a girl and she liked it, and she's hot and she's cold, and yadda yadda yadda. "Why are you like that, Kanye, and why am I still kind of into it?" My guess is that he's one of those contrarian types who gets off on pissing people off, but really I have no idea. "Have we figured out what "bathe my ape" means?" It sounds like it's about zookeeping, but I'm guessing it's really a weird sexual thing?

"I Ran" by A Flock of Seagulls. First, it's an iconic pop song, period. That opening drum, guitar, and synth stick in your brain like someone hammered them into it with a nail. Everyone can hear those opening strains and know exactly which song is on the radio. The rest of the song is just hooks on hooks. It's an 80s classic for a good reason. It's only when you're paying attention to the lyrics that you find out it's about an alien abduction. Boy meets girl, lights appear in the sky above girl, girl starts disappearing, boy reaches out to try and get to girl, boy also gets abducted. The video creates this sort of "in a UFO" feeling with very few resources with the mirrors and tin foil floor, and the rotating perspective with the mirrors and lights. The 80s is widely regarded as a very good time in pop music, and while some of that is nostalgia, not all of it is. "I Ran" is one of those pieces of pop culture history that really stands out from everything else, while also being an icon of its era. That's why it's my pick for the best pop song about aliens.

Music being as subjective as it is, and stretching the definition of 'pop' to be a genre rather than actually popular; I would say my favorite song about aliens is "An Awful Lot of Running to Do" by Chameleon Circuit. The Doctor is a very iconic alien, the music is adapted (ripped off) from the Doctor Who theme, it's catchy music, DW references, and a bit of a romantic imagining of the singer as a Companion. And also DFTBA...

NOD YA HEAD off the 2nd Men in Black soundtrack! I can’t believe no one else has said this yet. The best song about aliens is Galaxies by Owl City. I was a big Owl City fan in 2009 and I jammed out to this song a ton when it first came out, not really listening to the lyrics terribly deeply. I actually believed it was a sweet jam about travelling through space and being a cool space guy until I was in bed idly listening to my ipod nano (god I miss you 2009) and then I heard the lyrics "and he is the saving grace of the galaxy". Suddenly, all the pieces fell into place and I realized that Galaxies was a Christian song about following God and that MANY of Owl City's songs had Christian subtext.

Obviously the answer you were looking for is "Subterranean Homesick Alien" by Radiohead. Not only does it fit the mold of being a great song about an alien but like all such great subterfuge, it's really about us and how so often we feel alien in our own lives and skins. The words haunt me still to this day as deeply as do the notes, 'Of all these weird creatures Who lock up their spirits Drill holes in themselves And live for their secrets." And of course, I'm a cis white guy who came of age in the 90s so Radiohead will always be the right answer in my narrow world view. I love you Lindsay, whether I win this or not, and I am so sorry your job often requires you to be exposed to mean and insecure people in public spheres, so I hope these comments and our feedback helps remind you of how many that don't wallow in insecurity find what you do of value and worth waiting and paying for.

lol, kanye west is like that because ??? uh ??? but i don't care how he is, because he might be a kind of bad rapper, but his production skills are better than most artists. even if it's bad you can just hear the megalomaniacal confidence through the drum machine pattern and it's intoxicating. who else in pop music is that experimental AND idiosyncratic than kanye. i don't think his albums always age well, because it's always definitive in THE MOMENT. life of pablo was a salvia trip through pop trends at the time. it can age messily, but the year its released it's exactly where the world is. lol My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was one of the first rap albums i ever got super into, and that, to me, was just an instant classic. and album that transported 15 year old me to another world. lol and it spoke the most 15 year old conception of FAME ever now that i relisten to it, but that's kind of what's great. it's a movie of a subject, not the subject itself and that's always what's great about kanyye's music. the confidence. the confidence. paperbakc yay paperback writer haha haha yes yes now uh word count paperbak

The best stories are those with parts untold and instead leave the most visceral moments to be imagined. This is my bullshit excuse to put forward Space Oddity by David Bowie as the best pop song about aliens. One hundred thousand miles from Earth the sole astronaut awakes to find his communications and navigation equipment has been sabotaged. No one conceived the need to quarantine the EVA suit used by Major Tom in his space walk, but that oversight has led to him bringing an intelligent and rapidly growing stellar organism onto his ship. As evidence is mounting that he isn't alone, he undergoes a desperate ploy to vent the ship. Donning his EVA suit he exits the craft and then manually opens it to vacuum. But before he can re-enter the ship its engines ignite and the ship begins to move away from him, commendeered by the alien parasite he let, and left, aboard. Abandoned in space he floats, gazing upon the distant blue orb of Earth. And there's nothing he can do.

First off, this comment has SO much merit. But my entry is "Intro" by Fancy Space People purely because they opened with it at a Smashing Pumpkins concert and it was just the right amount of bizarre to get that party started. I'll never forget you, Fancy Space People! Just like I'll never forget the drunk dad who attended with his increasingly embarrassed daughter and kept shouting "ROCK AND ROOOLL" and "MAS TEQUILA" while the Pumpkins were on.

Disco Classic “I will survive” is in my mind the story of an alien lover coming back to earth and expecting to be in the same relationship as he was in before, but like. Bro, you can’t just GO TO SPACE and come back and expect me to just invite you back.

Anonymous

I am a truly horrible person because the only song I could think of was Earth Girls Are Easy by Julie Brown. Sigh, why couldn't my mind have gone to Flying Purple People Eater? I loved that song when I was a kid.

Anonymous

"Scream" by Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, assuming the music video is included. It's set in space with prime 1990s CGI. The alien is Michael Jackson, of course.

Anonymous

The clear answer is "Starman" by David Bowie, because he's not only a brilliant musician, *the* bi icon, a brilliant actor, and the creator of more styles than we as a society knew what to do with; he was also holding reality itself together with his existence. The guy died January of 2016, and, um, :: gestures to everything since then :: Also, I'd like to add that, to whomever reads these, if you could let Lindsay know that she's the best thing on the internet, and I hope she is doing okay, and having a great day.

I don't know from "best", but when I was little, Chris de Burgh's "A Spaceman came travelling" used to both haunt me and make me laugh at christianity being the consequence of some impromtu goof by a benign cousin of invader Zim. (Please do not use my name for a journalist, there is a real-life journalist with my name over here.)

Anonymous

Invincible by OK Go because it's basically about a Superman-like being fighting off an alien invasion, but where the main anxiety of the song is that the Earth's protector is fucking terrifying. Like, the whole song is talking about how great they are in increasingly scared language until the very end where the singer begs them to not just destroy everything themself.

You can't have songs about aliens without one of the originals - Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley!

Erin Katalinic

I think the best song about aliens is I Ran by A Flock of Seagulls because: 1. It’s a classic, plain and simple. You can’t beat the instrumentation and that synthhhh. 2. The lyrics make sense! 3. Once you realize that it’s about aliens it goes from being a weird-80s type of New Wave romantic to being an ‘oh shit this dude is being abducted by a sexy alien.’

Anonymous

Not sure if it counts but "Aerodynamic" by Daft Punk (assuming the music video is canon). Just a great danceable song.

Anonymous

I think you might’ve misinterpreted what you said. The best pop song about aliens is most definitely ET by Katy Perry ft Kanye West. Why? Because they make a probing joke. No other reason.

Anonymous

Obviously, it’s “I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper” by Hot Gossip.

Anonymous

I'll submit "Look to the Skies" by Creature Feature. No creative commentary to add, but it's a straight-forward song about 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'.

Anonymous

It's definitely Subterranean Homesick Alien by Radiohead, because it addresses the idea that there could be aliens abducting perfectly normal people in boring towns surrounded by boring people who would be more comfortable refusing to believe their neighbor's abduction story than accepting the potential of a much more interesting reality.

Anonymous

Eh, I’m going with “The Flying Purple People Eater” by Sheb Wooley, because nostalgia. I remember finding the premise of the song—an alien coming to earth to be a rock star—silly as a kid. But, I mean, don’t we all want to be rock stars at some point in our lives? Why shouldn’t aliens be allowed to have the same goals?

Anonymous

Well because I'm an absolute geek for camp I have to go with the entirety of Little Shop of Horrors! It's got an huge dork of a protagonist, singing puppets, and anti-capitalist analysis! *loud yelling from the other room* it's not pop?? what do you mean it's not pop??? .... If we're talking POP songs.... Do You See Us by Left at London and Nobi. (Yes it's about trans people but hush aliens are a traditional trans metaphor so I posit it still stands!)

Jack Gattanella

Starman by David Bowie. Bowie knew.

Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft by the Carpenters. Todd in the Shadows just reminded me this existed and I forgot how crazy, insane, and AWESOME it is. The Carpenters singing about aliens is unexpected and comes completely out of left field which might be exactly what makes it so freaking perfect.

Dyce

Alien's Exist by Blink-182. It's a classic pop-punk bop, are they singing? Are they talking? Either way they want you to believe they're being experimented by aliens, but in reality they're the alien because somethingsomething the angst of white kids in suburbia.

Schoolhouse Rock Interplanet Janet. First of all, Janet is clearly doing it for herself. Throughout the song we learn that she is a time traveler (“A solar system Ms. from a future world”) who has visited literally every planet (“there’s never been a planet Janet hasn’t seen.) She also leads some sort of expeditionary force (“travels with her comet team.”) She went to the sun, the fucking sun, which was busy being a ball of gas, bestowed sentience upon it and had it sign her autograph book like it was getting a fedex delivery. We also know she’s an alien and not a future earthling because a) we looked so strange she didn’t even TRY to communicate with us, and b) she thought that earth looked interesting. She had never seen earth before then. Janet gives no fucks what so ever. She gives sentience to stars and steals rings from planets. We are alive today because she decided to let us live rather than conquer earth. Ergo, Interplanet Janet is the best pop song about an alien ever.

Gotta rep a local band: "Alien Girl" by Tacocat

You can thank Todd for this one, but I’d have to go with Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Space by The Carpenters. It’s weirdly comforting for a song about first contact.

Clearly it's Incredibad by The Lonely Island, since it's an origin story about the greatest fake mcs on Earth

I like to think "If you're happy and you know it" is a song about aliens trying to learn how to impersonate humans.

I mean the best song dealing with aliens is OBVIOUSLY Intergalactic Planetary by Beastie Boys... Wait. Does that song actually have anything to do with aliens? Let's just agree that it does.

Anonymous

I listened to like eight different versions of this for the playlist and I decided that the version by Barney best went with the alien/monster boyfriend theme.

Anonymous

Maybe "Crushed" by Collide? I don't know if aliens are involved, but there's some space-time sh*t going on...

I'm not US/Canada, so I immediately lose this contest. But nonetheless! the best pop song about an alien is Frisky and Mannish's cover of A spaceman came travelling because it's simultaneously funny and poignant, and very in love with pop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPYsqZ944k4

Anonymous

I am reading this update with 3 Doors Down singing Kryptonite in the background, so I'm going to vote for that for sheer timing. Also it's excellent for karaoke, which makes a song better by default, and default is the greatest pair of words in the English language.

Coming to you from the Mothership, the best pop song about an alien is Parliament's P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)! Been spending the last several days at work exploring all the way down the P-Funk catalog, including the spin-offs and solo albums... I can't find any confirmation of this, but I bet that the female spinoff Parlet got its name because it's Parliament without the "men"... anyway, everybody be cool, await the arrival of our extraterrestrial brothers, and can't wait for the book to come out.

So, obviously, The Sign by Ace of Base is about someone post-abduction (and seeming alien-human romance) trying to move on with their life. They "have a new life," post recovery and return to our earthly domain. Their alien abductor/ress would "hardly recognize [them]." Their goal of moving on is clear though, as they recognize that they couldn't "care for [an alien]" in the way they need. They tell their alien that "you're not the one for me." The chorus echoes this understanding through the motif of a UFO's abduction beam. Their initial ascent via UFO beam has been re-interpreted and re-integrated as the titular "sign." Getting sucked up into a spaceship is not the start of a sustainable relationship, they seem to be telling us: "I saw the sign, and it opened up my eyes...life is demanding without understanding," TRULY! They address their ex-alien lover thus, "no one's gonna drag you up to get into the light where you belong...but where do you belong?" Our narrator don't have a UFO with tractor beam (dragged up into the light), and/or the will power, and/or a metaphysical hierarchy of beings necessary to abduct their ex-alien lover. And really, what were they thinking? An alien-human thing was never gonna work, does an alien belong on earth? The second verse only strengthens the extraterrestrial vibes of this song. Our narrator ponders just who their alien is while "under the pale moon, where [they] see a lot of stars" and questions how such a being "[could] bring me joy?" Our narrator affirms their current life path, they're "happy living without" their alien, recognizing that they wanted different things. They've left their alien, opening themselves and their eyes up to the truth of the UFO's beam.

I actually can't even think of explicitly alien songs other than Katy Perry's E.T. 😬 I do like it though, so I guess it counts as the best one for me personally 😂

Not exactly about aliens but "Go!" by Public Service Broadcasting. It's made up of the actual radio communications during the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Finnish person here so automatic disqualification but still sharing my favourite alien themed song. I really love spaceship by kesha. The feeling of not belonging is familiar and that song speaks to me

Safe and sound by Justice sounds like a space transmission. It gives me a mental image of a montage of a colony ship moving through the dark of space, cut to the crew at their stations moving knobs and levers in time to the music. Cut back to that establishing shot of the ship in space. A star flashes bright in the distance and then the song breakdown happens. When the music changes, we see another ship. The captain of our ship hails the other vessel but only gets static. They start to fear that the other ship is being aggressive and going to shoot them out of space. Captain shouts to prepare battle stations. Tension builds and at the conclusion of the song we’re left hanging until the next song (ala Daft Punk’s Interstella 5555)

Mel Curtis

So... I'm going t do a hail mary and do a song that was never actually an official release, if that's alright. The version of ET by the Pentatonix when they were competing on Sing Off holds a special place in my heart since that's what clinched that they might be able to go on to win the whole thing for me and my family, which was wild to us since they were such a smaller group compared to their competition. Then, seeing them just rocket to being so well known after that? *chef's kiss*

My crack team of researchers at home informs me that "Moonage Daydream" by David Bowie is the best pop song about aliens. I wasn't really able to get any particular clarification on this assertion, so I'm assuming the argument for it is that I have a partner who likes Bowie in general and that song in particular.

Anonymous

My pick for this is Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears. Probably not, strictly speaking, on topic, but it was made during the Cold War and speaks to the relentless pursuit of power by individuals and nations. This is an alien concept to me and makes me feel disconnected within my own country. Perhaps you didn't mean it in the existential sense, but I use the song to remind myself that there are other things in my life more important than attaining power. If you want something more "outer space-y"…then…um…let's see….Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley. A classic.

Anonymous

Omg, the best song about aliens is obviously "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft," though I can't decide if the best version is the Very Earnest cover by the Carpenters or the Not Very Earnest version by Babes in Toyland. (Oh, who am I kidding? If you have two choices and one of them is The Carpenters, it's gonna be that one.)

Anonymous

"Minor Earth, Major Sky" by A-ha. (Sounds nothing like "Take On Me".) It's very, I guess atmospheric is the word. For me the song has in its music the imagery of the grandness of outer space, the weightlessness, while the lyrics are about alienation, feeling like a stranger. Obv it's not literally about aliens, but rather a metaphore about the feeling of not fitting in in an Earthly society, but the sweeping, epic music imho gives it a feeling of flying through space while the words speak about very human feelings.

Anonymous

The most fitting alien-themed pop song (not the best), would be "Well, Everybody's F***ING in a UFO" by Rob Zombie. A song that still perplexes me with its existence. https://youtu.be/csUf0MAUIs4. As for your question vis a vis Kanye West and the "bathe my ape" thing. I feel like understanding what Kanye West means to say in his lyrics is like trying to understand Dadaism; we're probably much better off remaining in a state of apathetic confusion.

In this comment, I will outline the reasons that 'Starman' by David Bowie is, in fact, the best song about aliens. This song contrasts the feelings of being alone with the excited discovery of another being beyond the reaches of our previous understanding and, then, the almost naïve hope and felling of unity brought about by meeting someone from beyond our skies. These feelings are reflected in the music. At the start of the song, the musical accompaniment is simple - rhythm guitar followed by simple drums. The protagonist is alone, late at night, listening to the radio. As the singer discovers what they're listening to is not, in fact, a DJ from Earth, the music breaks into swelling strings filling out the sound and reflecting the hopeful message of the lyrics "He's told us not to blow it 'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile". In the second verse, our protagonist reaches out to a friend. They're looking for someone to verify their experience, to maintain this new feeling. The lyrics "Look out your window I can see his light, If we can sparkle he may land tonight, Don't tell your poppa or he'll get us locked up in fright" is reminiscent of many first contact narratives we have seen in movies and books. There is a hope that if we met an alien species that our first contact would be positive, a harmonious experience. However, there is underlying suspicion and fear. Fear of not being believed, of distrust, of danger. Finally, there is a sense of this Starman being a benevolent, prescient being. The Starman seems to know that our planet is in a delicate balance and, if we can direct our energies in the right way, we may be able to preserve our way of life and perchance improve it. This could be achieved by putting our trust in future generations, and guiding them. "He told me, Let the children lose it, Let the children use it, Let all the children boogie." This song, released in 1972 in the midst of the cold war, reflects the feeling of being on a knife's edge where one decision could "blow it" but, if we can succeed in fostering a world of hope and unity, it will be "worthwhile" for us and future generations. David Bowie incorporated many themes within his music. At first listen, these pop songs are a delightful combination of melody and harmony. Upon further listening, we are rewarded with deeper meanings. His song, Starman, is one such song with themes of hope set against the story of first contact with aliens. (Also, I literally just realised this competition was for US/Canada only but I had a lot of fun writing this while listening to Starman on repeat so I'm going to post it anyway)

(internet ate my previous comment of last week, so here is another one, including my misguided assumption that I had to answer all the questions, and now it is passed the deadline, but oh well, at you'll learn something) 1) what is the best pop song about aliens? 2) Why does “ET” by Katy Perry exist? 3) Why are you like that, Kanye, and why am I still kind of into it? 4) Have we figured out what "bathe my ape" means? Short answers: 1) Seagulls 2) Because Spielberg's mom is kind of an ass 3) Because you're good at your job 4) To create more shame by trying to hide shame Long answers: 1) Seagulls, by Yoda/Bad Lip Reading. Yoda is *the* alien. By this I do not mean he is stereotypical or an archetype, he is just, well, alien, there is no other way to describe him. Out of all the publications, out of all the lore, out of all the ridiculous details in the Star Wars franchise and Universe, it is never explained, not even once, what race is Yoda supposed to be. He is unique in his universe (with his baby version), has no else like him, not even a mating partner, he is alienated from everything including reproduction. Even the planet we discover him in is not his home planet. He is an alien *in his own home*. Now regarding the song itself, it is a song by an alien, about aliens. Aliens being us. This song takes the perspective of Yoda, sees the world through his eyes, transforming seagulls into maleficent creatures akin to dragons, not making a difference between a skull and a coconut, giving kids telehackysackynesist abilities. Later in the song, Yoda finds a stick under a log, and deduces that this is how trees reproduce, as he has no earthly idea of how the things of life work in our universe. (That stick and its immaculate conception will later come back as a major point in the sequel "My Stick", where it will take on divine property as being "better than bacon" (clear analogy to the forbidden food from the judeoislamo culture) 2) ET (the song) was inspired by ET (the movie) who was created by Steven Spielberg (the director) inspired by the divorce of his parents (the legal dissolution of a marriage) caused by his mother wanting to sleep with his dad best friend (an ass move, in a negative sense, not in a dance sense, possibly a dense sense but you are digressing now) 3) You are good at your job due to two main skills: your ability to connect to the messages of the artist, and your ability to take a step back and analyze that message and the way it is transmitted. Now obviously, outside of work, when you just want to relax and listen to music, your analytical sense is resting, but your beautiful empathy and connection remains. And what is the message of Kanye in that song? What is the message of Kanye in any song? The message is "I'm the best, listen to me, I am so good, oooh I am glorious". Which is what you hear. Which is why you like it. 4) "Bathe my ape", from the French "donne un bain à mon singe", is an idiom that originated in the early 17th century, based loosely on Louis XIII. Louis XIII, like several kings at that time, became king while still a child. He was 8 year-old when he was officially put in power. Now being a child, he was not actually running the country, but he still had to appear at official ceremonies and such. Louis XIII was however a rather wild child, with thick curly hair, excessive energy, and predilection for outside games. He was so wild he was sometimes referred by maids as "Petit Singe" (small monkey). Problems arose when officials would come to the castle, and Louis XIII's mother would not want to show foreign dignitaries a "king" covered in mud and dirt from playing outside. She would then regularly ask the maids to force him to a bath as soon as he got home, to avoid bringing shame to his family and nation. More times than not, this however led to intense screaming from young Louis XIII. On several occasions, this alarmed foreign dignitaries who demanded to know what happened, sometimes going as far as rushing into the royal bathroom thinking the king was being murdered. They would then discover a muddy naked childish "king", and walk away with disdain, bringing great shame to the king's mother. The idiom "donner un bain à mon singe", spread by the royal maid, gradually became more and more popular as to mean "a situation where by trying to avoid shame, you actually bring more attention to the shameful thing and make the situation worse."
