So although I gave myself an executive decision for every 5th episode, it's still not hard and fast (believe it or not), and I have not quite yet decided who will be tackled after Death. So I'm curious - based on your knowledge of my interests, media available and the format of the show, what is a character you'd like to see me cover?

Beast from Beauty and the Beast. You could finally go into the terrible character that was The Enchanted Christmas Beast.

Anonymous

I'd actually love to see you tackle Arcee from Transformers. I'm sort of assuming that it'd end up similar-ish to the Starscream review (in that Transformer Prime unless there's some obscure version I don't know about her) is most probably the best, but there's something to be said about the process of reinventing a smurfette in different continuities over the years.

Anonymous

I'm delighted by the rise of Transformers in your videos; you'll never see me complain about more Transformers. One possibility: Bobby Drake, the Ice Man. He went from a founding X-Man in the comics to a founder-but-rogue in the '90s cartoon to "next generation" student in the movies. Sir Lancelot would be awesome, given his decline from paragon of chivalry in the old French stories to freak and coward in 20th century depictions, but that's all mostly in text.

Anonymous

Ender Wiggin, as depicted in the comics, the original short story, the novel and then the movie.

Anonymous

The Phantom (of the Opera) episode would be interesting and fun. Also (and I know it won't make it THIS time because Death just one), the "God" episode would be hella interesting and really useful.

Anonymous

I'd be interested to know if any long standing comic book characters like Lois Lane, Wonder Woman, Black Widow, Mockingbird have changed over time... didn't Lois Lane have her own comic called "Lois Lane, Girl Reporter?" Seems just a wee bit sexist right there in a title. I imagine she's gone from damsel in distress to... probably a plot device. (Her investigative journalism brings bad guys to Superman's attention.) I guess I'm saying go for Lois Lane!

Anonymous

Mystique, Lindsay. You know it must be done... although, at this point, maybe you'd wanna wait a year so that you can cash in on Apocalypse, so at this point... I dunno, Peter Pan?

Anonymous

What about a Shakespearean character(s)? Like hamlet or Romeo and Juliet or Ophelia

Anonymous

Catwoman? She's been revamped and revisited so many times! :)

Something in me is expecting Episode 5 to be a Transformer - and obvious though it may be I think Optimus Prime would be an interesting character to study - from the original toy commerc- uh, I mean, animated cartoon from the '80s to the far more nuanced and complex character seen in the excellent one-shot "The Death of Optimus Prime" - certainly, I'd love to hear your take on him, and if there's some additional MTMTE praise in such an episode I can't say I'd object..... =P Other than that - I'd like to second Christian's comment about the Beast from Beauty and the Beast. Memories of the "Enchanted Christmas" episode are still fresh in my mind and a Lorax-style deconstruction of why exactly his character in that is so utterly horrible would be a fitting counterpart. Only if your sanity/pain threshold can withstand it, of course. Personally I find myself foaming blood at the mouth at the thought of how badly Disney fisted their own 1991 masterpiece. Repeatedly.

lindsayellis

Fascinating as I find the whole Ender series, I'm afraid Ender has had way too few iterations (I think four, if you include the comic)

Anonymous

Wonder Woman has a pretty messy Canon. Megatron...Remember Beast Wars(Purple t-rex with knee high boots.) & Beast Machines(Suddenly wants technological purity for cybertron) that was an...interesting time for him. Damn Beast wars...Just reminded me of Blackarachnia...She got a remodel before the end of that show which was essentially her in a metal bra & underwear.

Greg Walters

I would go with a classic movie monster - Frankenstien or Dracula, hell even the Invisible Man - original story, movie, comics, 'invisible man with the serial numbers filled off' movie, show with a different direction rather than take then appearance in comics. Robin Hood could be fun, though Prince John or the Sheriff would make a more intriguing examination as they very a great deal depending on the version.

Anonymous

I was really thinking that you'd have to do a Transformers character! I'd be shocked if you didn't.

lindsayellis

Megatron has been bumped up to the "most interesting" on the Transformers list thanks to IDW and More than Meets The Eye, so one day! But too soon after Starscream, methinks. Wonder Woman will have to wait until after dawn of justice comes out.

lindsayellis

Ooh, Invisible Man, that's a good one, I'll add him to the list. I was thinking of having Universal Movie Monsters be a voting round for Halloween.

Anonymous

I have fought the temptation to vote for Mystique each time it came round because I thought you'd inevitably get to her anyway, so I should cast my vote for a character who might not come up again - not 'throwing away my vote', so to speak haha. That said, I would love to see you cover her or - ooh! - as I write this, I realise I would love for you to do Nightcrawler even more. So. Nightcrawler is my answer. *grabby hands*

Anonymous

Tracking the evolution of the "masked vigilante," from Scarlet Pimpernel to Zorro to modern-day superheroes.

Anonymous

Alternatively, King Arthur. AKA the perfect excuse to talk about Monty Python & the Holy Grail

Anonymous

Now that I've thought about it a little more - Aladdin could be one worth looking at. More iterations and adaptations than I could care to count. Suddenly thought of it when I remembered how obnoxious I found Disney's version of him to be. The Genie was the only thing that got me through that damn movie.

Anonymous

I think I'd like to see Lois Lane, if only for the chance to see you do some on-location "roving reporter" spots. But also, by all means, go with Arcee. Treat yo self!

Anonymous

I know that you are doing character retrospectives, but would that apply to actors/actresses? I don't have a particular person in mind, I was just thinking of people that play very distinct characters/roles.

Anonymous

Mary Shelly's Dr Frankenstein and/or the monster? you could use stuff from Mel Brooks, Joss Wheedon (twice one episode and one season arc), the Rocky Horror Picture Show, DC comics, Universal Pictures,... It's almost a trope more than a character and might be too broad/ill defined

Anonymous

This probably doesn't quite hit the sweet spot of what the Loose Canon series is about (and it might not even be a series you're a fan of), but the Doctor from Doctor Who is a character who has, of course, had a number of different incarnations. That said, unlike most other characters you'd look at for LC, most of his incarnations have actually been within the same continuity. And plenty of people have already compared the various incarnations of the Doctor, so I for one couldn't hold it against you if you felt like the analysis had been done to death by now. (Though Lois Lane is a rad suggestion, and, since he lost out to Captain America, I'd be quite interested in seeing you tackle Superman at some point too.)

Anonymous

Blackaracnia from beast wars possibly the most complex character in the show

Anonymous

Maybe Alice from Alice in Wonderland? There aren't that many of her, but they have a bit of diversity

Anonymous

i suggested this on twitter once and its a little more abstract. "the first woman president". now i know its more of an idea then a character but i think it works for the show. "the old dick mentor" is another type in the same vain, and im sure there are more that you can think of.... another idea is "type cast characters". you know how actors like Malcolm McDowell and Leslie Nielsen play preaty much the same characters but in different movies and different name? well just pick one and look how that actor tropps evolved from (and throgh) the characters he played. hope this suggestions help even a little bit ;)

Anonymous

I'd be interested in more difficult to define entities. I'd be very interested in sort of the "Spirit of the Forest" figure. Or the "Mother Goddess" figure as well. As well as the "Alien" figure or the "Future Human" one (ie, a person from the future who comes back to inform the protagonists or whoever about future events or the fate of mankind).

Anonymous

Throwing out a couple ideas. Sorry for including someone else's idea. King Arthur, Godzilla, King Kong, Sherlock Holmes, Hercules, Wonder Woman, James Bond and Mystique. And considering their massive popularity, how about a zombie one.

Anonymous

How about androids/gynoids/humanoid robots? Like how gender roles have changed through the years, and how the good/evil spectrum has changed ... or is the aggregate all the same? Maybe it's too broad a topic to hit all at once ...

Anonymous

After an extraordinarily awesome episode on Captain America that explored his many comic book iterations as well as animated and live action, I would really love to see you take on the turbulent history of Jean Grey... who rises from the ashes of good writers and bad until her eventual doom at the hands of Brett Ratner, the poor man's Michael Bay, who couldn't even keep her character consistent within a film trilogy, let alone true to ONE iteration of her as the Phoenix.

Anonymous

I don't know if this would work with Loose Canon, but I'd be very interested to see your take on how the concept of "strong female character" has changed over time, or how the roles of female protagonists have changed over time. If that doesn't fit with Loose Canon, then maybe Romeo and Juliet, Sherlock Holmes, Alice in Wonderland, or Cupid.

Anonymous

I really dig the idea of tackling Strong Female Character. There's definitely a wealth of material on the subject across the ages, enough to make Loose Canon: The Movie instead of just a half hour episode. (I would totally donate to a Kickstarter or something to see Lindsay do 80 minutes or more on the canon history of Strong Female Characters, assuming it was something she actually wanted to do)

Anonymous

I agree with what some of the others have said, this could be an opportunity to stretch the "Loose Canon" idea a bit and maybe cover and actor's career.

lindsayellis

I'm going to file this away in the "definitely never" category, but Nella has been developing a series that will be more in this wheelhouse. Possibly. (Her) time permitting.

lindsayellis

That would be a different show - Nella has been talking of doing one like that for a while now. She's much more interested in the careers/roles of actors/actresses (I can't say it interests me much).

Anonymous

At the risk of Godwins lawing this thread I think it would be interesting to see media interpretations of historical figures over time, so perhaps Hitler or Queen Elizabeth or MaryWatching Queen of Scotts.

lindsayellis

Oh I'm definitely having a real people round one of these days. Weird to think people will definitely vote for Hitler.

Anonymous

I think Sherlock Holmes is the way to go. Most depicted character in film history, has 2 shows right now competing for our attention, universally loved drug addict. Apologies to those who have already suggested him.

Anonymous

What about Doctor Moreau? Granted the character has not translated to films very well, but there is still the aspect of the influence of Circe on the character, animal experimentation and off-shoots like 'Moreau's Other Island' by Brian Aldiss or 'The Madman's Daughter' by Megan Shepherd.

Anonymous

Doing someone from The X-Men might be cool. Kitty Pryde?

Anonymous

Though you went over a mythological character recently with Hades, I feel that doing an episode on Hercules would be very interesting. The character has been portrayed in many different ways and by many different characters. Each depiction remains loosely similar to the character, but almost each iteration seems distinct from each other. With whatever you decide, I'm sure that it'll turn out great. I loved the Captain America episode and I'm VERY MUCH looking forward to seeing you take on Death.

Anonymous

Huge Norse mythology nerd here, so definitely putting in a vote for that. In terms of deities, either Thor, Odin or Loki would be good. WRT media, suggesting American Gods, Joanne Harris' Runemarks series (including her latest book which is the Norse myths from Loki's POV), or Son of the Mask (which has Alan Cumming as Loki).

Anonymous

I'm going to go with Dracula as well, mostly because I think Jonathan Rhys Meyers' "American" accent is the best thing to happen to television in recent history.

Anonymous

Maybe something involved the history of Santa Clause, starting with Saint Nicholas and then the process of him morphing into the capitalist symbol he is now.

Anonymous

Not gonna lie, I wanna see you do Nightcrawler, but if I may throw something new out there, how about Faustian Characters/People who make deals with demons/devils because______

Anonymous

I see that a few people have suggested Dracula and while that is great and all, perhaps consider examining his nemesis, Van Helsing (M.D., D.Ph., D.Litt., etc.). That or Joan d'Arc.

Anonymous

There's like 23 movies and 30 TV movies plus 10 video games. I'd say the diversity is lacking more than the variety; most of them are adaptations of the same story.

Anonymous

I've been trying to come up with a Fantasy suggestion, but Conan's the only character I can think of that's appeared in lots of media by lots of creators. Elric's been through some changes since the 60s, but Moorcock's been at least involved in most of it. And there's no screen adaptation or wide recognition. Maybe Elves? Could be an excuse to talk about The Broken Sword vs. LotR.

Anonymous

I suggest Hannibal Lector. There's been four different actors in five movies and one television show. Well, and four books. I'm sorry I didn't bother to check if this was already suggested.

Anonymous

Or King Arthur & The Knights of Justice for some pure Grade A 90s.

Anonymous

Another idea would be the figure of the Master Amateur Detective. Which largely originated with Holmes, but expanded into the works of Poe and became an international phenomenon and kinda a symbol of modernity (based upon the new sciences of forensics, fingerprinting, etc).

Anonymous

I'd really like to see you cover a group with multiple incarnations instead of a single character, like the Avengers, Justice League, X-Men, etc.

lindsayellis

That could be interesting, though I worry it could turn into a rather tedious rundown of "then X left, and Y took over as leader. Y was leader for a while then Z came in..." etc

Anonymous

That would be a cool idea for when the holidays arrive.

Anonymous

Someone earlier mentioned James Bond. How about if you do one on M? I feel like that could be interesting. That or the Bond Girls but...that can get repetitive pretty fast.

Anonymous

Dracula? I think I've read he's the second most adapted characters in literature history. Also, a maven of the eventide crossover perhaps? :)

Anonymous

I'd like to suggest Eve, I know that it may be a bit too broad or abstract but I also think she's in a similar vein to that of God or Death (and in that case she's missed her opportunity because she could've been in that category). I think she could be really interesting?

Anonymous

The Phantom! :) I'd LOVE to see that (having once been a CreepyPhanGirl like yourself.) Or Peter Pan, I think that would be awesome too.

Anonymous

Christ like Figures in Film, works could include Taxi Driver, Lion King, and Cool Hand Luke. Character with the initals of JC also tend to be Christ Figures examples include John Connor and Jim Collins. This could be outside of your premise or something you're just not interested in. One of my professors wrote "Jesus at the Movies" which chronicles Jesus in film since the start of cinenma. I trust you do to cover this topic in a fair and through way. Thank you for taking the time. <a href="http://whatculture.com/film/10-greatest-christ-figures-film.php" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://whatculture.com/film/10-greatest-christ-figures-film.php</a> <a href="https://postprojection.wordpress.com/2011/02/10/12-monkeys/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://postprojection.wordpress.com/2011/02/10/12-monkeys/</a> <a href="http://www.kinema.uwaterloo.ca/article.php?id=264&amp;feature" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.kinema.uwaterloo.ca/article.php?id=264&amp;feature</a>
