Now that we have the aspect ratio squared away, let's look at the resolution. The will be in 1080p, that's settled. But in what resolution should the art be made.
Here I made two and a half pictures. I wanted to make three, but it became fairly obvious that the last resolution was not going to be effective. The biggest pic was done in double 1080p and the pixels were getting lost. It didn't look like the 'look' I'm going for.
So the two viable ones - the smaller is done in the rendering resolution (somewhere around 1500 by 900 since the GUI takes up some space), and the bigger one was done in 1920*1080 and then slightly shrunk.
The shrinking was done by the drawing program and by renpy. I can't see the difference, honestly. So the only question is should the background art be made in 1080 or slightly smaller. Looking at it, I'm thinking the backgrounds should be made in 1080 and the n shrunk, but the characters should be made the size they are supposed to be. This will slightly smooth out the backgrounds while leaving the characters crisp, helping them pop out.
I still have to seek counsel from the forums. Those old visual novels often made their backgrounds fairly monochrome. I don't know if they did that to cut costs or to help the more vibrantly colored characters stand out.
The short 'game' is here but also the pictures for those who don't want the hassle. Check them out. I'm giving Drake some new clothes as well.
Feedback is much appreciated. Ideas too.
