Today I'm joined by Trash (@bidenbigboi) to discuss the French novel, the Kindly Ones by Jonathan Littell. The novel follows an SS officer through WWII which provides various opportunities to discuss various aspects of the Eastern Front and the Holocaust. Then, later, we discuss Littell's background which points to this being an entry in the Novels as Spycraft series.

*note, I accidentally refer to Friedrich Flick as “Frick”, what are you gonna do

Shoe Manghorn

Jimmy, unrelated, but I remember you saying you liked The Bluegrass Conspiracy. Have you read The Colony, also by Sally Denton? If not I really recommend it. It's on those crazy murders of the members of that polygamist group down in Mexico, with detours into LDS history, a totally separate insane polygamist group with spooky connections, weapons dealing, the weird political aspects of the Mexican polygamists, and NXIVM figures very prominently too. It's completely wild and full of things I think you would find fascinating.

100%, I've read it. tried to get Denton on the show, I guess she's getting harassed by the polygs so she might not be keen to talk about it (or my show's too weird, who knows)

somehow i haven’t read this, but i absolutely will now. great episode as ever & excellent guest, thank you both. side note on the topic of french novels & celine, whom you mentioned—have you followed the recent rediscovery of a few of his manuscripts, the subsequent legal battle, & their recently being published in french? interesting story. here’s a couple links (not the best sources, necessarily, but you’ll get the gist.) https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/26/world/europe/celine-manuscripts-france.html https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/a-newly-discovered-celine-novel-creates-a-stir
