This is a weird case where Wesley being a genius who saves the day would perfectly fit the story, but even after getting access to their computer, all he does is lead a hunger strike. You also have to wonder if the writer of Children of Men got some inspiration here. And it’s pretty neat to see an early appearance from Brenda Strong, who would go on to play Sue Ellen Mischke on Seinfeld and Mary Alice Young on Desperate Housewives. Plus, Jerry Hardin is probably best known now as Deep Throat on The X-Files, and would later get a much showier guest role on this same show as Mark Twain.

Start by wholeheartedly agreeing with you that you know shenanigans will abound, despite the majestic music suggesting otherwise. Yeah, this is an episode that is quite horrifying and infuriating. The Aldeans were quite a detestable bunch. Good performances, especially from Jerry Hardin and Brenda Strong, horrid characters. I love how PISSED OFF Picard is in this episode. Picard, yourself by your own description, and I are in the same boat that we’re shit with kids, and this whole plotline boils the blood. Patrick was great at selling Picard’s righteous fury. Given you are a fellow Slytherin, combined with how you reacted to the PADRE arc in Fear the Walking Dead, it’s not surprising you got as angry and wrathful as you did. I wouldn’t doubt, Jess, your ability to leap through the screen and rescue the kids. The Aldeans make you realize the Jedi aren’t all that bad with kids, or hell, even the Sith aren’t quite this overtly horrid. Or at least they’re not full of shit about it. Yeah, they’re evil, but at least they admit it. Wesley does step up to the plate. Wil was very good in this one. And yes, when the Aldeans offer to be better families to the children, when Wesley’s mom is Dr. “Beverly. Mother. Fucking. Crusher” as you so perfectly called her, loved that, and his essentially adopted father or at least most prominent father figure is Captain. Goddamn. Jean-Luc. Mother. Fucking. Picard. Such a promise is most certainly a fart in a stiff wind. I love how most everyone worked together in this episode, though sadly Worf and Tasha get a little underused. Beverly came to WORK, this episode. Gates was marvelous in this one, especially herplaying Beverly as remaining a very cool customer whilst her son is in danger, and her solving the Aldeans climate change problem. You observe how she was much more gracious than you would have been. Particularly as you were very much in favor of using the sculpting, sonic-screwdriver, thingamabob on the Aldeans, especially if they took Rocco as you brought up that example; you’d be well within your rights on that one. One, there is the Hippocratic oath to consider: Beverly will treat their wounds, heal their wounds, BIND their wounds, but she will NOT INFLICT their wounds. Second, there is the pragmatism of if the Aldeans problem is resolved, ergo, there’s no danger of them trying a repeat performance with their whole cradle snatching what have you. The kids were sweet, and I loved you got emotional over the one little girl thanking Picard. Me, I’m laughing at the relatability of Picard’s discomfort, yelling, “Same, Jean-Luc, SAME!” The subplot with Harry was great, love that you loved that too. I can’t entirely relate as I never took Calculus in school. I’m too stupid, I guess. I concur with you on the availability of a well-rounded education. Good to hear you enjoyed math in school, even if you have no idea as to why. I gravitated more toward English classes, and I too was very drawn to the art classes, both literal arts, and theatre. You speak of not being a science gal. If it makes you feel any better, despite the fact that my mom was a science teacher for close to forty years, plus her strong passion for science, science was never a strong subject for me either; Mom has tried her best to not be too upset by that. You mentioned the schools you attended and the courses available, yeah, the schools I went to had trade work courses as well, and I second your comments made about that. A most thoroughly wonderful reaction that I enjoyed so much, Jess, thank you very much.

Yeah, the computer in this episode is an occasion where Wesley’s boy genius skills would have organically worked. I suspect the writers started to get too much shit that they decided not to have such a resolution in this instance, despite it making sense. Wesley DOES have a line telling Picard he thinks he’s figured out the computer implying he was working on that before Data comes up with the solution that he did. Ultimately, I don’t mind as much as it allows Wesley to show some of his other strengths as a character, not all that well liked by the fandom at large though he is. I have heard the comparison between this episode and Children of Men, and yeah, curious if there was inspiration drawn from this episode with that movie.
