My favorite example of a “guy who didn’t know he was supposed to just be a minor piece of cannon fodder” is from Raiders of the Lost Ark, but not Pat Roach as the German Mechanic. Rather, it’s the soldier who proves surprisingly badass enough to throw Indy out of the truck during the one chase sequence. I believe the Mystery Science Theater guys even singled him out, dubbing him, Düsseldorf Strauss.
