I think Jess has a point where she says his ego is already inflated with all the Spider-Man stuff; he's still a young adult coming into his own and has a lot of learning to do and is perhaps becoming less humble like he was at the beginning of the series.

Do you supposed civilians in comic book worlds, who have no idea about the heroes' personal lives, find it weird that the same few people keep getting kidnapped over and over? I wouldn't be surprised if at this point, New York's news shows don't have a ready-made chyron saying "Yeah, it's Mary Jane again." And it didn't have to be this way, as Kirsten Dunst was quite upset at how her whole role in the first two movies was just to be a hostage, and Raimi actually promised her she'd get more to do in the third one. But you guessed it, the studio stepped in and forced her to do the same old thing again, which she wasn't shy about publicly slamming.

In all honesty (not to spoil my reactions) I really loved the Garfield films significantly more. I think there were a few factors in that. But I do believe the representation of the female lead was one of them though. It's not just that she's a hostage all the time. But she (at least in two of the films) is a hostage with no bra on and oh there just happens to be water pouring down in the scene or right where she's specifically standing. I don't know if that's more the studio or the director but it's just honestly not super enjoyable for me to sit through.

In the second film, you can even see Kirsten notice that her skirt is riding up and try to unobtrusively tuck it back down! Somehow that was the take they decided on. And yeah, Gwen Stacey was treated so much better (at least until the end of the second one).

I prefer the Raimi films but Gwen Stacy is a much better female lead in the Garfield ones than MJ is in the Raimi trilogy. The romance is too tropy with the love triangles as you say, and she's always the damsel in distress with little agency.
