Sarah Jane was originally going to leave at the end of the last season, but then Liz Sladen loved the script for Mask of Mandragora so much that she begged to stick around for just this bit longer. She was also allowed a quite unusual level of creative control over how her exit would be handled, and her biggest request was that the story not be all about it so it could be as surprising as you clearly found it. She also of course requested she not be killed, and also didn't want to be married like had already become the cliche for departing female companions.

After this, she had a "pilot" that never got taken to series, called K-9 and Company, where the doctor gifts her K-9 and they have an adventure together. That's where she meets K-9 for the first time. It's cheesy and badly written but a fun watch because it has witches in it. Only many years later did they try again (and succeed) with Sarah Jane Adventures. They had a much better budget and better writers by then.

Remember how, in "School Reunion", Sarah told the Doctor that when he dropped her off in Croydon, it turned out to be Aberdeen? You've now seen the other side of that... Although it might not seem so now, Sarah was actually among the most long-lasting of the Doctor's companions. Her tenure lasted for 18 stories (80 episodes) spanning three-and-a-third seasons, which puts her slightly ahead of Jo (three full seasons comprising 15 stories, or 77 episodes) or Ian & Barbara (also 77 episodes), although still some distance behind the record holder, Jamie (113 episodes). I think the reason her departure is such a wrench is firstly the amazing chemistry between Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen, but also because it's the end of the last vestige of the present-day Earth/UNIT setup inherited from the pre-Fourth Doctor days. From this point, the universe of the show begins expanding again.

Yeah, it’s always jarring when a companion leaves. And the feeling is exacerbated when it is abrupt as it is here with Sarah Jane. It’s the same with Doctors in that it can go either way, and it reminds me how grateful I am that Twelve’s departure was structured the way it was so that I was able to prepare myself for it, and it made it easier for me to say goodbye. I do understand your shock over Sarah Jane’s departure given how revered Sarah Jane is for fans of Doctor Who, Classic and New. There's also the fact that like you say, Four and Sarah Jane are one of the most iconic pairings of Doctor and companion so it would be reasonable to presume that she would stay with Four for the entirety of his run. It's like how Eleven and Amy and Rory are synonymous as is Twelve and Clara, yet in both cases, those pairings end prior to regeneration. I get what you mean by it not feeling like Sarah Jane was there for as long as she was. To use New Who as an alternate example, Clara currently holds the record for longest running companion of New Who in terms of episodes, and if my math is correct, Clara is also currently the longest running companion of all of Doctor Who in terms of stories. Again, that’s if I have the math right. Thus, like Sarah Jane, if one hears of that prior to watching Doctor Who, it does lend itself to being surprised by the tenure feeling shorter than expected. Of course, like Clara would do on New Who, Sarah Jane does make such a monumental impression amongst the fandom, to the point that she got her own show, and we got the beyond heartwarming memorial tribute to her that you reacted to in the last Doctor Who December. Though in terms of Classic Who companions, my favorites are Ian and Barbara, Sarah Jane isn’t too far behind them in terms of favorite Classic Who companions. Concerning the departure itself, I liked the fact that it was not an overly dramatic departure, which as I see has already been commented on, was at the insistence of Lis. The scene itself was sweet. Tom and Lis did a terrific job. I thought your post-reaction thoughts were very well done. Sure, perhaps not the most eloquent, but it was still well done. I understood what you had to say, and like everything you do, I can still tell that you speak from the heart, and it’s all completely genuine, and it is very much appreciated, Jess. Thank you for the lovely reaction.

The doctor couldn't take Sarah jane to Galifrey because he thought the timelords would wipe her memory and send her home. Like whatthey did to jamie and zoe at the end of the war games. That would have broke his hearts
