Ryan

Roddenberry was open from the start that this was an attempt to make a spin-off which ended up not going anywhere. And it could have been pretty neat to see a Trek show with more of a Doctor Who type setup, complete with a young Teri Garr (and this episode makes a quite amusing contrast to her role in Close Encounters of the Third Kind).

As Ryan says, this episode was meant to be a backdoor pilot for a show that regrettably never was given the green light. And it’s a shame that it didn’t as the whole thing felt very much like an American Doctor Who, and a sort of precursor to Quantum Leap, which is right up my ally. I would have loved the HELL out of this show, and judging by your reaction, I feel that you would have felt similarly. had it been picked up for a series. Alas, it did not. Robert Lansing was excellent as Gary Seven. Yeah, I agree with you that he did have a killer vibe. And like you observed it’s initially nicely ambiguous as to whether he’s a hero or is he a villain, and both possibilities are equally plausible. I knew you were going to love Teri Garr as Roberta. I agree, she was just so delightful. I mean Teri’s always great, and here was no exception. I’m sorry to say that Teri didn’t have a great time with this as, from what she’s talked about, pleasantly put, Gene Roddenberry wasn’t exactly the nicest guy to work with. Major love for Isis. That cat was dynamite, and I loved that you loved her. Spock with Isis is me. Spock is already the most relatable of the main cast, and in the scene with him and Isis, the level of relatability shot through the roof. Your reaction to that moment was perhaps my favorite moment of the reaction. Now to talk about Spock’s fashion this week. That hat and coat ensemble that Spock was wearing was a handsomely perfect combo. The colors matching the way they did was superbly well done. And the second hat Spock wore was great as well. Behind the scenes this episode proved to be unnervingly and eerily prescient. To explain, the Enterprise crew travels to 1968, and as a way of explaining how chaotic the time period was, Spock mentions that “there will be an important assassination today.” Six days after the airing of this episode Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated. To make it worse, two months after that, Bobby Kennedy was assassinated. And then there’s the fact that a Saturn V rocket carrying Apollo Six did in fact launch on the same day as King’s assassination, albeit it wasn’t carrying any nuclear weapons. (So far as we know anyway.) I had a small laugh over Scotty claiming that one can’t simply hide a whole planet. I quipped, “I don’t know. The Sith seem to be most adept at it from time to time.” I also had a good laugh over your saying that Isis seemed to be calling all the shots, and I said, “Well, she is a cat. All cats call the shots.” That is a fair complaint about the filler scenes. This was a most delightful reaction, Jess. It was very much appreciated.

I really enjoyed this episode. I thought the secretary looked and acted like a young Teri Garr so I had to IMDB her only to see she was in fact Teri Garr. The cat reminded me of "The Cat from Outer Space" which I loved as a kid. The premise was good and sadly could still be made today. More than 50 years later we still have not grown in social ways to deal with our technology (IMO) which is disheartening. I agree with the footage feeling like filler but in defense this came out when launches were new and exciting so the audience may have appreciated it more (even if not a real live launch).

You were reminded of a sort-of Who-style sonic screwdriver. In the same Who-vein, I was a bit disappointed we didn't get a big "Mr Smith fanfare" when the computer came out of the wall :-)
