This is the only live action Disney remake that I've 100% liked. They finally struck a perfect balance between respecting the original and doing their own thing. And then Pinocchio just ruined it.

Along with Dumbo, this one I saw in the theater. As far back as I can remember Aladdin has always been my favorite Disney film. As a result, it’s the Disney film I rewatched the most when I was a kid. All the characters and songs are high on my favorite lists for Disney if not at the top. The character of Aladdin in particular, is I would say, my favorite male lead of Disney. Jasmine likewise is about roughly tied with Belle for being my favorite Disney Princess. I agree with you in that the elaboration of Jasmine’s character was a highlight of this newer version. Your love for Abu was adorable. Similarly, when you're singing and dancing along with the songs, that was a most delightful part of this reaction. I too remember everyone being worried about the casting of the Genie, and who they would get to follow in the footsteps of Robin Williams. And when the official casting was announced, although I remember there being concerns about the casting, much like how you described your thoughts on the casting, I wasn’t terribly worried about it. My thoughts being so long as Will Smith did a good job in making the role his own whilst staying true to the spirit of Robin’s performance, this should be good, and I thought Will was good as the Genie for the most part. The cgi was a little bit unsettling. The greater concern that I personally had was the casting of Jafar as not only is Jafar my favorite Disney character, but he is also in my top five favorite characters of anything. Thus, I was most worried about who they’d get, and my recurring thought was, “Who do you get to play Jafar that’s going to be anywhere near as iconic as Jonathan Freeman has been as Jafar for all these years?” My assessment, particularly after I've seen this again, is that I felt that this newer portrayal of Jafar was quite good. It may not reach the level of excellence that is Jonathan’s portrayal, though in all fairness that’s a nigh impossible bar to match. (In my opinion, anyway.) Nevertheless, I do feel that Marwan Kenzari did a good job as Jafar. You say that personally, Jafar was never one of your favorite Disney Villains, and I hear you say that and I'm okay with that. Had a feeling you wouldn’t have the highest opinion of Jafar. Simply chuckled, shook my head a little, and said, “Yeah, I figured as much. Ah well. Story of my life.” I also respect that you say that you preferred this newer portrayal of Jafar. I may not agree with you on that, but I respect your honesty, your reasoning, and your opinion. Wasn’t overly fond that they made Iago an ordinary parrot. I was already somewhat miffed that they didn’t get Gilbert Gottfried back, though Alan Tudyk was a good pick. Of the Disney remakes I've seen, I'd say I enjoyed this one the most. Part of that is bias like how you say thus far the Cinderella remake was your favorite. That was highly emotional hearing your story about when you learned of the death of Robin Williams. Though I was not at Epcot when the news broke, I had a similar moment of shock and sadness when that happened, in that a good friend of mine called me and told me about Robin’s death pretty much at the exact moment that the news broke. It took me a fair amount of time before it even felt real. I do appreciate you sharing your own story. This was a most wonderful reaction, Jess, and I enjoyed it very, very much.

It really doesn't help that Jafar is the rare Disney villain who doesn't have his own song (at least until the sequel), and just piggybacks off one of the Genie's.

Which is a shame, because I've heard the deleted songs that they wrote for Jafar and they’re all great. I did like that at least he got to sing in the original film, even though he didn’t get his own individual song. I do love his song in the sequel.
