Hyolyn was part of a very popular girl group Sistar. They disbanded last year to pursue individual activities. From what I understand, Hyolyn's solo songs have not been as well received as her group activities of the past. Some ppl think that this performance was intentionally provocative as sort of noise marketing. If that was her intention, it worked. She was at the top of the Naver search rankings for days. In general, Korea is much more conservative than the West. This was a drama awards show, which is even more conservative than a regular music awards show and all those ppl in reaction shots were actors. Hyolyn was invited to sing because her OST song was nominated. Some criticisms I read: she should have only sung the OST song, she was dressed too provocatively for a conservative awards show, blah blah blah. But, Hwasa from Mamamoo dressed in a similar fashion at MAMA 2018 and she got so much shit for it. Kpop in general is hyper critical, but women in the industry have it 10x worse. Netizens will criticize everything: if you gain weight or lose weight, skin color, makeup, clothing, proportions, face size, love life, plastic surgery etc. the list is endless. Even if she had only sung the OST song and been completely covered up, they would have found some thing to criticize anyway 😤

I was just about to mention the same thing, reactions from a music award show versus the drama award shows. It' pretty sad honestly how they view the women in the entertainment industry in South Korea. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. As for her solo songs, I personally like her new songs, albeit I think she's sort of catering to the western sound. But either way I'm happy she's doing the kind of music she likes.

I was watching her on Radio Star and she had said that she didn't even know the crowd was uncomfortable and that she thought it was well recieved. She said the crowd seemed to like it but she just felt like she didn't sing well.
