Hey everyone, how are you guys doing?

I can't tell you guys how relieved I am to finally put this one out there. Of course, there's no way I'd ever blame Nyaruh for the delay. Her computer was borked and in the repair shop for over two weeks, which is something really out of her control. She continued working through that time on her laptop, but it's such an old machine that... well, saying progress was slow would be charitable. I really wish she wouldn't have had to go through that...

Still... yes, huge relief to finally post this.

With that said, here's the changelog for this update:

  • Day 29 for Keisuke
  • New CG artwork

Looking forward to getting right into this update with my top husbando x3

it won;t load old keisuke saves, it just gives me an error.

tennisace

Yes. The last Shoichi update broke a lot of old saves. I try to mitigate the need to make changes that risk doing that, but sometimes it can't be avoided. That's part of why the 'Skip to next choice' option is freely available when it's not a Ren'Py standard.

It wont let me load any of my saves for this version just gives me an error code

tennisace

Yes. I just said in a comment above that some older saves are broken. You'll have to use 'Skip to next choice' to get back to where you were if you are affected

JFC, that Keisuke POV scene to cap off day 28 was really intense! That's some of the best writing I've seen in general, and it certainly made me physically shake with anxiety and dread as I read it. Amazing job! As always, Nyaruh hit it out of the park with the CGs. Keisuke's blushing face makes me swoon! To reiterate, this was an amazing update!

Taimaishoo

Oooh! That bitch! They need to topple her from her high horse! Grrrr!

The Mysterious M3tav0X

I just woke up and couldn't be happier to see this! Can't wait to get started; I'll leave an update after I've finished the new build! Edit: THAT BACK-STABBING, DOUBLE-CROSSING, SON OF A B*TCH!! Kei-chan deserves better than that load of BS... One of the few people in that place he actually trusted and this is how his trust is repaid... I'm just waiting for someone to lay Granny Urushihara out like a hideously-dressed hare-skin door mat! I also have a good guess as to where the story might be going, since they talked about how Kei would need an attorney to file a law suit against his grandmother for the VERY ILLEGAL theft of his personal funds, and I remember it being mentioned that Yuuichi's mom works at a law firm... I'm looking forward to sweet, sweet karma that's about ready to fall on that b*tch's head! Very excellent work, as per usual! Also, just a couple of side thoughts: First, I'm not sure if this has been brought up before or not, but has anyone else noticed that in a couple of Shoichi's sprites, the cropping isn't quite correct and the tips of his ears are cut off? It's always bothered me but I figured it would have been brought up / fixed by now. Second, since the vocals were removed from Kei's school festival performance, I thought it might be kinda neat to have, like, karaoke lyrics on screen for the duration of the song? I just feel that the scene loses a bit of it's impact now that there aren't any lyrics at all.

Nat

Omahgod this was great as always ^-^ Quick bug note: when getting ready for bed Kei puts his shirt back on twice to hold his chin. Can't wait for the next update Basky, your work never ceases to impress me~

Oof, I know you have said that Sho's route broke the game and that we would have to skip back ahead to our most recent day, but the game won't even allow me to skip at all (the only file that wroked was back on day 16, that didn't work. And I tried making a new game and even then it won't allow me to skip). I was up to date on his route... it's as if the game doesn't have any idea I actually got to day 28... I'll try reinstalling update 42.

tennisace

Usually when save files break, they also break persistent data (the data that records what you've already seen or unlocked). If that happens, just go in the game settings and tick the option to Skip all/skip unread. That way when you press the skip button it'll skip even if it thinks you haven't seen t hat content.

Great writing in this episode! The agreement with his grandma went much better than I expected, and I don't think is such a bad situation. I love that I can spend next 3 months satisfied and not worry about situation Keisuke is in. Because as as stupid as it is, I really get attached to the characters, and I get emotional about the story. So great job with the update!

Pat Giver

I hope his route ends with his grandmother getting shot out of a canon and into the sun.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS (I've edited this comment a few times to best convey what I want to say, hope I succeeded) . . . . . . . . . . . . . That scene with Keisuke's family gave me shudders as well, I feel so, so bad for him. Fantastic job on all of this story development, Basket! However, if I can give some other feedback, I'm quite perturbed by something else with this update. I'm having quite a hard time immersing myself with the romance after Yuuichi punched Keisuke, I do not think I can reconcile with that scene. How are things just fine after literal domestic abuse? It's confusing to me, because I'm about certain it wasn't your intent to convey the outright sinister feeling I'm getting from Yuuichi, which is that he resorted to violence against Keisuke to KEEP Keisuke—that this is Yuuichi starting to control Keisuke. That would be the clear-as-day signal I would get from that situation in real life, but again, I'm sure this isn't the real intention. Do I just need to learn to roll with the fantasy? Or, will this action truly be expanded upon here? Such a conflicting update for me personally, since you are SO GOOD at storytelling, but I can't help being put off in this case.

Jacek Jagosz

I also found that moment really sudden and not excusable. I would like to have a QTE there that would decide if Yuu can controll himself or not.

The Mysterious M3tav0X

I definitely see where you're coming from with this, but I think you might be looking at things from the wrong angle; at least, I interpreted the scene somewhat differently, myself. First, it's a bit of an exaggeration calling one punch "domestic abuse," if for no other reason than the fact that it VASTLY over simplifies what domestic abuse actually is. Yes, Yuuichi definitely could/should have handled the situation in a much less aggressive manner, but we can't just be looking at this scene as if it were something black-and-white when it's actually a lot of shades of gray. Part of what the scene was trying to convey, I feel, is just how volatile and fragile Yuuichi's present emotional state actually is; Yuu's had to start coming to terms with some pretty huge realizations about himself in what is, overall, a very short amount of time, and just as he's really starting to fully accept this new aspect of himself, Kei just drops this bomb of "I'm breaking up with you for your own good" out of nowhere and without even a moment's consideration to how Yuu feels about the whole thing, which brings me to my next point. You interpreted the scene as Yuuichi "resorting to violence against Keisuke to KEEP Keisuke," but I don't think that's quite right. Though Yuu wasn't happy with the idea of breaking up with Kei, the biggest issue he seemed to have was that Keisuke decided to break up to "protect" Yuuichi all on his own. There have been a few instances across the course of the game where we've gotten to see that Yuuichi is very resistant to the idea of people deciding things for him without regard to his input, such as Shoichi's confession scene, where Yuu chastises Sho for "deciding how [Yuu] is supposed to feel" about the whole thing. When Kei has also had a streak of brooding on his issues and shutting people out while he tries to muscle through problems on his own instead of admitting he's in over his head and going to his friends and loved ones for the help he genuinely needs; and the only times we've seen that mentality shut down is when one of the other characters (namely Shoichi) gets a little rough and knocks some sense into him. Pair those two things together with the already emotional train wreck that is Yuuichi, and it's not out of the question that a punch or two might get thrown. Again, I'm not saying that it was the best or even a necessarily correct way for Yuuichi to handle the situation, just that it's an understandable one given the circumstances, and that the whole situation wasn't so much about Yuuichi trying to "keep Keisuke" so much as Yuuichi trying to knock some sense into the hard-head, if in a significantly more extreme and/or emotionally charged manner than we've seen to date. In truth, Kei and Yuu tend to be some of the MOST stubborn and LEAST well adjusted characters when it comes to these sorts of things, what with Kei's absolutely awful home life and Yuu's apparent (though undiagnosed and untreated) mental health issues, so even if it wasn't necessarily the HEALTHIEST manner to handle the situation, neither party was acting especially out of character, nor was either free of blame on the matter. Who knows, though. I might be COMPLETELY off base with my interpretation and just talking out of my ass here, but this was just how I was viewing the scene, speaking as someone who has experienced and witnessed a number of the obvious mental health issues displayed by the characters. At the end of the day, it's really up to the individual to form their own interpretation of morally gray scenes like this, but I feel it's important to consider other interpretations as well; simply taking the scene on it's own, without the context of the deeper circumstances or characters involved only serves to paint the scene as black-and-white when it isn't nearly that cut and dry. Having been in Yuuichi's head for effectively the entire game, we can say with confidence that, while he might be impulsive, tactless, stubborn, and even a bit rough at times, Yuu is genuinely a very kind, empathetic, and generous person who cares very deeply about and is very protective of the people he cares about - NOT the type of inherently violent and hyper-controlling person that could be called abusive, even if this particular scene on its own might call that into question a bit. Just to reiterate again, I do NOT condone violence as a way of managing these sorts of interpersonal situations, nor do I think the way Yuuichi lashed out at Keisuke is something that should be just hand-waved and brushed aside; I'd expect the characters to, at some point, have some kind of open discussion on things like this in the future. I am merely trying to convey the idea that this one very complicated, morally gray instance shouldn't be used as some soul deciding factor on these characters and that it would be a disservice to the story to consider the situation or the roles of those involved in it as anything less complicated than it truly is. Edit 2: Typos

(Edited again quite a few times) Yeah, you're right. I was sleep deprived from the night before last night when I played it, combining that with being a witness to real domestic abuse, it just gave me a moment of sorts, and I was putting my worst fears into that comment even though I'm actually confident that's not the direction Basket is going in. Of course, Yuuichi has not been portrayed to be the kind of "hyper-controlling" person, that's plain to see by reading Tennis Ace, but I still can't help but be conflicted. It is not only because physical altercation in itself is still the worst method of conflict resolution (in this case), but even with Yuu's expressed intention of him and Kei being equals in their relationship, the power dynamic inherent between them in Japanese society throws another wrench into things, for me at least. In any case, we will see more in three months!

tennisace

There is actually a purpose to the punching scene, although, yes, I would agree with what Raver Man said that this cannot be called domestic abuse, solely because there isn't a pattern of abuse. The point of the scene is indeed to shock, as Yuuichi is portrayed throughout the entire game as being a pacifist and a gentle giant. He has the attitude of a delinquent, he's big and buff, but he's also basically a wall flower when it comes to violent impulses. He's the kind of person who gets angrier over his friends being mistreated than he does over himself. That is part of why the scene shocks so much and why it was intentional. As for it being developed further; yeah, it's not just dropped and done. It highlights part of Yuuichi's personal struggles of internalizing critical issues due to them either making him feel too scared, too uneasy, too guilty; as well as Keisuke's issues where his home life has been so fucked up that, even though he's never gone so far as to be physically abused, his perception of what is or isn't normal has been completely skewed and he doesn't even bat an eye to the thing. Both of their attitudes (internalization and normalization) are something to be tackled in the future, actually. It's just that they need a third party to weigh in about it and let them know just how f'd up it was.

The real domestic abuse is from the grandmother. I see now that Keisuke's father is a coward controlled by his mother. Violence isn't good or bad itself. Violence can be the only way to solve certain problems. Obviously, it would be better if violence was the last option. I think Yuuichi punching Keisuke is like a parent slapping a very young child at a punctual moment because words aren't working. It's possible that Yuuichi, angry and sad at that moment, thought his words wouldn't be enough vs Keisuke's stubborn and that a punch, an unexpected act of violence from him, would help the hare to return to reality.

I dont know why but MediaFire is always so slow when it comes to downloads. Could you do Mega for Future?

tennisace

The problem with Mega is that it applies a download cap for non-pro users. And it's a dynamic limit at that, so if one day they have a huge load on their servers, they could cap downloads to less than the amount required to download the demo.

Ahh okay. Loving the updated. Love a good conclusion even when the game is unfinished ❤️
