It was a very odd experience for me to watch this, and difficult really to separate my expectations as an FMG artist and an MCU fan. I've seen this origin story a million times across many comics, fan-fictions and even fan films. It's so well worn to me, it's almost boring. How does this latest and most glossily produced take stack up? Really well, I thought. The droll banter between Bruce and Jen is great, and the 'Hulk boot camp' was fun. The humour feels a bit forced from time to time, which feels odd considering quite a few Marvel films work very well as action comedies (Thor Ragnarok, portions of Avengers Endgame and Civil War. Spider-Man Homecoming is laugh out loud funny).
Really though--let's address the elephant in the room. Is it the kind of thing we have all been dreaming of? Well... Sort of. Not quite. Ish. Let's be real--Nobody is ever, ever going to make a She-Hulk show for middle-aged dudes to get off to (aaand... Sorry! Nor should they). This is the best She-Hulk TV show we were ever going to get. The Brigitte Nielsen film was just going to have her turn green without growing. The Mitzi Kapture pilot was going to have her turn into an orange-painted version of volleyball player Gabriella Reece. Both would likely have sucked and would probably not have featured any growth transformation sequences. The Disney show is smart, well produced and actually featured some pretty decent process (that final shot of Jen's legs de-hulkifying at the end of episode 1? Spare my blushes, Disney). I'll take this over that godawful porno they made ten years ago any day.
