I've heard elsewhere that information needs to be passed between validators which inflates DAU counts. I really have no idea about this. But there are certainly all sorts of things that go into these totals (withdrawals, taking action in on-chain games, placing and canceling orders). Relying on single (blackbox) measures isn't always so reliable.
