I use values of colors by multiplying them on my black and white shade map. By that I can controll reflections by adding additional weight to any particular zones. After that with gradient maps it became quite satisfying to put colors on. The black and white map is basically a white sculpt, it separates excessive information I don't need at the stage of painting general shadows
