Zang Sheng woke instantly when he felt the power descend from the Elder’s box. It would have been impossible not to; the power the man emanated felt like all of Sheng’s ancestors had had their funerary tablets broken.

Still, he kept his eyes shut and took stock of his wounds. He was not too badly damaged—the massive rent in the front of his body hadn’t hit anything important. His cultivation and refined body had managed to resist the worst of the damage the rooster had inflicted on him.

Bi De had not broken him. Being defeated by a chicken would be embarrassing to some, possibly embarrassing enough to cause a deviation; but Sheng refused to feel shame at his defeat at the hands of a Spirit Beast who was his equal in cultivation.

He would have to train even more harshly in the future. He did not comprehend how Bi De had broken through an attack that he had spent his Vital Qi on, but it had happened.

It was utterly vexing, but irrelevant. All that mattered was that he was lacking.

He took deep, even breaths, and turned his attention from himself to the voices that were emanating from the stage. It was mildly annoying that he had apparently just been forgotten where he lay, but there was no helping it.

Somebody was speaking.

“Oh? Guilty of many things?” an old voice asked.

“While they are innocent of being demons, we have found numerous instances of… dishonourable conduct. Particularly the conduct of the Inquisition and the Patriarch,” Bi De declared.

Sheng felt a change in the air, like it was suddenly denser.

He opened his eyes… and blinked, as he saw mist surrounding the arena, having formed into a giant woman with nine golden tails.

She was tending to another man, with blonde hair and blue eyes, the splitting image of the depictions of the Second Patriarch.

He was later named: Zang Zengsheng. The man Sheng himself and his own father were named after. He should have felt pride, to see his line’s sire.

Except for one thing.

The man’s eyes were weak. Sheng noticed it instantly. They were not the eyes of a man filled with resolution and might, solid and unflinching. They flitted and locked on to things. They were shifty.

Sheng had to shove down his instinctive revulsion for the behaviour. That was the Patriarch. The Founder of the Sect. His Ancestor.

Surely, he was about to erupt with might, after he found out what the foxes were doing? He would see the blood sacrifices, and fight his way free.

Sheng waited. But all the crystal showed was the fox-woman showing off her home.

A home that looked rather well kept. Humans and foxes went about their business.

The Patriarch then promised to go and return… and return he did, again and again, each time receiving healing and gifts from the foxes.

Sheng could hear the disciples start to murmur with the same confusion he felt.

Just what was going on here?

And then, there was a great outcry, as the founder took a fox hostage, and tried to steal one of their treasures, breaking every rule of hospitality there was—and the mortals of the mountains took their hospitality very seriously.

The mountains were a cold, and dangerous place, and the customs of them were as old as time. Blizzards would blow in unpredictably, and travelers would often find themselves taking refuge in another’s home; None would dare turn a stranger away, just as no stranger would dare to harm or steal from a person who gave them shelter. Even the worst of mortal bandits abided by the Mountain Code.

Those from mortal families were standing up, and others were cursing—and even Sheng himself felt a brief surge of satisfaction as the man was beaten severely by the woman. He was so utterly pathetic.

Sheng couldn’t believe he was the founder.

The scene changed, the mist crackling with lightning—and Sheng’s eyes widened. His jaw dropped. His breath quickened… and he could tell he was not alone.

Even through the mist, the man had presence.

His eyes were pure and resolute. His body was perfectly refined, and the scars that marred his front simply added to his majesty.

This was a man who never backed down. He never retreated. He was might incarnate.

Sheng stared at the magnificence of the First Patriarch. The man who was often sidelined, or omitted all together as a fool who died to the foxes.

That… that had to be a lie. Sheng basked in his overwhelming presence. He could feel lightning Qi touching his very soul, charging him, filling him with might.

“Strength above all,” the man said with a smile, and Sheng knew the mantra was good. He had lived his entire life by it. Surely, the Patriarch would have been proud of him—

To protect those we love.

Sheng’s world screeched to a stop. The man, Zang Young, laughed as he lifted children up onto his shoulders, and shook the hands of mortal soldiers.

Their words… their creed had been different?

He was almost numb as the First Patriarch’s eyes widened and he went to check on his brother.

The man rose, and went off to war—for the sake of a man weaker than him. For the sake of a snake, against a woman who had never wronged them.

The battle was spectacular, of course. His might was everything Sheng had ever dreamed of.

And then, once more, there was confused murmuring, as they stopped their quarrel, and apologized to each other. Their eyes brightened, as they thought of the future.

And then a lightning bolt pierced both of their backs.

The stone under Sheng’s hands crumbled into dust.

He could only imagine that this had to be some sort of lie. His ancestor was a paragon of strength. His ancestor was mighty. He wasn’t a rat who killed his own brother from behind because he was too weak to face him openly.

But he could feel it. He could feel the Qi in the air and the mist, charged by lightning. The lightning of the last dregs of an honest man.

Sheng grit his teeth, as his ancestor led the assault on the foxes, and drove them from their home.

Blood almost unconsciously filled his mouth, and he spat it out. He kept his eyes locked on the mist.

==============================

On the ground of the arena, Yun Ren was sweating as the mist shifted and billowed.

This… this was not entirely as planned. He had created this illusion, sure… but it had been nothing like this. The mist had taken on a life of its own. He could feel the Qi within it, bubbling and surging and changing things.

Yun Ren had planned on a show. He hadn’t planned on the emotions within it. He hadn’t planned on the sheer visceral sensations that he was certain everybody in the arena could feel.

He grimaced as the Qi within it brushed against his own, it wanted something. It demanded something, now that the remnants of the old fox could finally act.

The illusion tugged at him again. Yun Ren took a deep breath as the mist in his mind pulled back slightly, revealing its deepest self to him. Yun Ren reached out… and ripped off the last of the shackles that kept the mist tied to the Mountain.

======================

Che Han had been reeling when he saw the first part. All his life he had been taught of the monstrous foxes, and how they had betrayed everything… only for them to have been the ones betrayed.

And then, the scene changed, as a man who looked a lot like Che’s own father appeared, frowning.

“There's no way the Patriarch could have been defeated like that,” the man whispered to somebody else. “I need more information… but… I think Zengsheng may have killed him.”

The words were treasonous… and somebody had noticed them.

Zengsheng stared dispassionately as the report came in.

“Send Hanbin on a mission and get him out of the way. As for the rest of the clan? The vine shall wither, but the Sect may still make use of the stunted fruit."

Han felt his grandfather stand up, his Qi roaring with fury as Zang Zengsheng sent their ancestor on a suicide mission… and then condemed the rest of them to thousands of years of being held back.

He felt like he wanted to vomit as he turned to Yun Ren. The man’s eyes were glowing blue; mist was seeping out of his mouth, and he was shaking slightly.

And still the vision continued.

==============================

Elder Chongyun could only watch. He knew the Inquisitors were mostly for internal affairs… but the sheer extent they had been used was mind-boggling. The visions were speeding up, now, as more and more of the early generation was culled.

This… they could not recover from this. There was no way any of the families and clans under their banner would tolerate this.

There was another roar of fury from this time the Mo family, as one of their ancestors was snuffed out just as easily.

And then… the vision changed to a woman he recognised.

Zang Wen, the “Arch-Traitor.”

Shenhe’s aunt. Chongyun blinked. Shenhe, and Wen, who were of the line of Zang Yong.

Zang Wen, who found out the truth and was tortured and broken for it.

Elder Chongyun’s heart started beating faster. He had joined the sect and risen high within it. And now… he had an idea that just might salvage things. Something that might prevent the utter implosion of the Sect and the devastating consequences that would come with it.

Chongyun licked his lips and waited for the right moment to act.

==============================

Shen Yu stared up at the mist, as a final crime played out. The inquisitors, extinguishing an entire family on the current Patriarch’s orders.

Bi De had been right. They had been dishonourable.

Shen Yu had known something was up, but this certainly hadn’t been what he was expecting! Shen Yu had spent his time looking for demonic influences and otherwise evaluating his pupils. But in the end, it was much, much better than he had ever hoped for.

Really, just where did Jin find all these people? He had a transcendent talent for finding transcendent talents! In the profound realm, and they had driven a sect into what was looking to be an open schism?!

Shen Yu’s smile widened. He looked up at the stands. Family heads were all on their feet. Disciples were looking to either run, or get their own pound of flesh.

He would have to get Yun Ren something nice. Because this? This was something quite amazing.

Shen Yu smiled at the boy as he fell face first to the ground, twitching slightly, his Qi exhausted; but the mist itself seemed to be growing in power… like a storm cloud.

Shen Yu could feel the intent within, as all the mist on the mountain started to gather.

He smiled and nodded.

“Well! I do believe this ends the trial of the Shrouded Mountain Sect. They have not been infested by demons.” He declared grandly. “And now that the verdict is rendered, it is no longer our place to interfere with their internal affairs. Your tagalongs may follow if they wish.”

Bi De blinked, and then seemed to get what Shen Yu was getting at.

“Will the mortals be alright?” the chicken asked, and Shen Yu smiled.

“The barrier will hold. The mortals are safe;. The inquisition…” Shen Yu reached out and grasped the little beacon he had left for himself, cutting between the intervening space.

The inquisitors, trussed up and looking extremely panicked, fell to the floor of the arena.

Bi De bowed, and made to get ready, turning to talk with his friends. Shen Yu watched with a grandfatherly smile.

“Why?” a voice croaked from next to Shen Yu’s feet.

Shen Yu blinked and turned to look at the man who was kneeling, at his feet. The Patriarch of the Shrouded Mountain Sect’s face was twisted into an ugly, furious thing.

“Why what?” Shen Yu asked.

“You’ve ruined me. You’ve ruined us. You’ve come into our sect, torn off our face, and now.. Now…!”

“Oh, why did I do this? Do you really wish to know?” Shen Yu asked. He leaned in, and smiled at the man. “Because your sect insulted my grandson.”

The man gaped at Shen Yu as the Unconquered Blade reached out and slapped the man’s face twice. It was almost an affectionate gesture… aside from the fact that the strikes nearly exploded his meridians.

The Patriarch collapsed, coughing.

Shen Yu then turned back to the children.

“Ready to go?” he asked.

The children nodded.

And thus… they left the Shrouded Mountain Sect.

==========================================

There was silence in the arena, at the sudden departure. The barrier stayed… but the arena was still full.

Things were balanced on a knife’s edge, and ready to erupt into bloodshed. Family against family. Disciple against disciple. Thousands against the Inquisition, who had murdered and ripped apart the minds of far too many disciples.

And then, somebody broke the silence.

“Shrouded Mountain Sect! To me! Stand with me, against the blood of the usurper and the kin-slayer!” ever-cautious Elder Chongyun shouted. His words ripped through the arena as eyes widened. “With me! To restore our sect to glory!”

The spell broke.

“Kill the kin-slaying cunts!” Che Hanbin roared, his face purple with rage.

Disciples and families roared, their eyes locked on the inquisitors.

The current Patriarch’s power exploded off of him. The charge instantly stalled.

“If you think I will just lay down and die—!” the Patriarch began, and then eyes widened.

He turned around as all of the mist from around the mountain finished ripping itself free. It churned like a storm cloud… and then it launched itself at the Patriarch, a spear of lightning and foxfire.

=========================

The mountain bucked and rocked for three days and three nights as cultivators did battle upon it.

Mortals watched on with fear as it shuddered and trembled.

They didn’t know what was happening. But they did know one thing, as the perpetually misty place was revealed entirely.

It would never be called the Shrouded Mountain again.

==========================

=========================

And so ends the Shrouded Mountain Arc.

Thank you for the chapter!

WarStrider72

Thanks for the chapter boss!

WarStrider72

Was just about to go to sleep too

Qrystof

Hell yeah. Fox ancestor demanded more illusion qi to get revenge. That's sick.

V01D

What little ego was left had nothing to pass on to Nezhan?

Anonymous

Now begins the Normal Mountain Arc

Matt Pendragon

where is nezun in all this, at first I thought he was behind some of the mist stuff, but it seems more that the mist has its own will? which make nezuns absence a little strange

Andrew Denton

And the mountain itself turned against them just lovely. And well played, Elder Chongyun!

Andrew Fox

Holy shit, did the ancestor fox take control of the mist to attack the traitors? That's awesome.

WarStrider72

Yun Ren in Jokers voice from Persona 5: SHOW ME YOUR TRUE FORM!

Enochi

Wow.... Um unexpected ending. One thing is what about their friends? Are they among the 'children' cause I would think Fat Han at least would be wanting to fight for his family. I really like this being the end of the Arc but I hope it has a bit of an epilogue at least to clear some things up.

Seth

Holy shit.

Anonymous

Damn that was a good fucking ark

WarStrider72

The Shrouded Mountain now known as the Divided Mountain. Su Nezhua and Zang Yong got their revenge at last!

Enochi

Given it was Foxfire AND Lightning I think it was both.

ItWasIDIO!!

Yes Shen Yu is a monster the typical xianxia that if he wasn't with Jin or little less virtuous he'd be a villain

Seth

But wait, what did Yun do exactly?

WyrdWizard

I do wonder why Shen Yu had the inquisition and patriarch tied up already. That doesn't make much sense to me.

Anonymous

He started projecting the memory crystal. He thought he'd have to project it all himself, but once he got it going, the surrounding mist kind of usurped the projection and infused it with emotion and weight.

Npad11111

Now I'm kinda hoping the young master survives this kerfuffle, only to be rivals with our boy Big D.

taukid

😂 Wasn't expecting Gramps to basically just go "Dueces, I'm out" and just leave after the trial

Red Viking

Yes! Entirely everything I wanted from this, just hope we get a few follow ups to see it all through.

Seth Richter

"shenhe, and wen, who were of the line of Zhang Wong" -- did anyone remember and can remind me who any of these people are?

Red Viking

If you suspect the secret police force that's supposed to fight evil from the shadows of being corrupt and possibly demonic then you don't simply leave them in their shadows, you round em up and them release all who're innocent once you're sure.

Bender

Ver nice, but a bit underwhelming. I was expecting more flexing from the MCs. Enjoyable!;

Sean Ulrich

I’m blanking on a name… who is Shenhe? I’m going to look for it…

Anonymous

Shenhe is the Female Elder who is currently out fighting the Male Meiling Look-alike. Zang Yong was literally named in this Chapter, he's the Older Brother. Zang Wen is the friend of Nezan and former weilder of Summer's Sky.

WarStrider72

Wen is the 7th master of Summer Sky, Yun REN’s sword atm, while Shenhe is another elder of the Shrouded Mountain that wen to destroy demons

BlueMage_VT

Oh. Hell. YES!!!!! Thank you for the extremely satisfying chapter!!!

Anonymous

Loss of face means the Patriarch would attempt to kill the Fa Ram Gang, the Inquisition would attempt to kill or stop the Broadcast of the Trial to the rest of the region.

Anonymous

If he hadn't, the Inquisitors would have tried to interfere with the broadcast, rather than attempt to interfere directly. That would have been a pain to deal with after the fact, so he did it before hand, like he set up the barrier. The Patriarch was, technically, free.

MatrixM

That was really cool. Looks like they want. Sheng dead, though. Thought he would live and be reformed. Unlucky that he lives in a ruthless world that rarely gives chances. Maybe he'll just be imprisoned, we'll see.

Anonymous

Mike drop! There's no topping that!

Anonymous

Wonder if this bolstered Yun's bloodline abilities? That was a huge amount of power...

Anonymous

Damn that was good!

Josh

I hope Sheng survives

Quixotic

hold up ain't there still demons in the sect though?

Melanie Me

Great!!! Loved it Had a feeling Shan Yu had the inquisitors locked up.

Baines

I don't know, how do you flex harder than this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjZ5I8l32CI the day Shen Yu graced your sect....

Ch W

The elder cleaning out demon strongholds in the northern mountains.

Anonymous

She' the elder who was talking with Chongyun when lu ban's body was first brought back to the shrouded mountain. She's also currently away and leading the charge in destroying demonic outposts in the mountains.

Cyrus McEnnis

Better than maple syrup.

Lanter

Wow, what a finale! Not only the true past, but even the current Inquisition as well! Lol, Sheng Yu was like "Wow, cool, none of my business now though 😎" *mic drop* Woohoo for anarchy and revolution! I was getting fond of Zang Sheng for a moment there, but his survival is looking slim now.

matthew gilley

That was satisfying! Kill the kin-slayers has been my cry at the end of most of these chapters. Ah.

Dirk Gent Lee

My theory is they insert themselves into a group via mind hazy stuff once they leave the mountain (other than Lu Ban)

jetblackvalias .

hoping for Zang Sheng to make it out alive ._. fantastic chapter, fantastic writing to make us care about an unapologetic bastard introduced only a few chapters ago!

Dirk Gent Lee

Are they all cool ditching like that? Or at least could they have a good bye with a few people of worth? Feels weird for Rizu to be like, bye, hope you survive the schism doctor friends

matthew gilley

There is a single demon whisper into the ear of an elder at the edge of the yellow rock plato, brooding as he looks over the azure hills. This demon attempts to bring him and his stealthy disciples into conflict with Rou Jin

Anonymous

Well, all the other cultivators set the bar so low he looks like a saint.

Akki

Chongyun will try to make Shenhe the new Patriarch/Matriarch.

Cam

Whoa. Great finale!

Gardor

Glad everyone just believed the story made with qi from their historical, famously deceitful enemies. Cuz there were... lightning emotions in the mist, or whatever.

Cyrus McEnnis

I'm not 100% sure on this, but the Medical Pavilion might well be counted amongst the "tagalongs". It's even money whether they took advantage of that or whether they stayed to help the reformation of the Exposed Valley sect.

Anonymous

Kinda? There is a demon leading the elder that was the father of the previous demon but he seems to be fighting the influence. I'm guessing Bi Di's herbs are going to end up with him and when he tries them it will free him from the control and let him break free.

Cyrus McEnnis

I wonder if they're going straight home, or whether Gramps is a goin' demon hunting in the mountains.

Featherweight

I think that depends a lot on Sheng’s actions. Like if the mists didn’t actually pin any dishonourable action on him and he takes up arms against the patriarch faction off the bat he could come out of this OK.

Anonymous

Oh my all I hoped for and more. Thank you.

Kat

I hope he re models himself on the good brother!

Anonymous

No, the story has been pretty clear that the only demons in the Shrouded Mountain Sect were Lu Ban and that one lady who's with that Zang elder in the Azure Hills. Everything else has been strictly human cultivator cuntery, not demonic fuckery.

Anonymous

The truth can make mountains fall.

Justus Saucedo

Not exactly. Lu ban was there yes, but he was the only one. The other lady wasn't paet of the SMS she was just some "mortal" servant for the Zhang Elder that's currently in yellow rock Plato.

Kat

I hope that Wens descendent gets made leader, and Sheng lives to reform himself in the image of the good brother

Anonymous

Shen Yu: *wiping tears from his eyes "That's my boy's boys!" Eagerly awaiting to see who decides to join up with them as they leave and who possibly plans on staying in order to deal with their sect. Either way, the Sect of Fa Ram gets more exceptional talents!

Dion Crump

I’m pretty sure every sect now has a bounty on your head after those blasphemous words

Anonymous

Don't forget the current Patriarch behaving in a way that just confirmed that stuff. Add in that most of those clans probably had their own doubts and suspicion. Also, both Nezuha and Zang Yong's Lingering Will were in the Mist, a cultivator's Lingering Will is literally the remnants of their soul and why they can post-humously pass on their techniques and have entire conversations with protags. The people watching basically got face-blasted with the Qi of an Imperial Realm Lightning Qi user's presence, which isn't fakeable by the Foxes, they'd need an Imperial Realm Zang to agree to give them a piece of his soul for this in the first place.

Victor Segura

Honestly , I hope Zang Shen survives. Because for all his faults, he was a righteous individual and he DESPISED his ancestor and by the looks of it, the patriarch. I kind of want to see the young lady survive also, because I think the story need more horrible woman but not irredemeable in the cast

BelligerentGnu

Not *in* the sect, at least currently. They're all out heading for the azure hills I think.

N U

While this is all good and nice, I sure hope the gang hasn't conveniently forgotten that Shenhe is busy clearing out actual demons and cultivators to the north. I can't imagine having her home base suddenly plunged into civil war isn't going to fuck with them, and it just happens when the demons are planning to spring a trap on her. Imagine calling for backup or sending out a SOS only to get shit on cause everyone's too busy killing each other or picking up the pieces.

Anonymous

I hope Shenhe survives the demonic ambush to find out her ancestor wasn’t a traitor

Barry Morgan

Elder Chongyun is a very clever opportunist. And I mean that as praise, at least in this case.

John D Jones

Why would think Young Master Sheng is dead or that he isn't reformed? He felt utter contempt and loathing for Zang Zengsheng because of that one's weakness and treachery. He also felt deep respect for Bi De and held no ill will against him. And he was enraged that the "Strength above all" mantra the SMS claim was wrong - or at least incomplete.

Anonymous

I wouldn't say Zang shen was "righteous" but I would say he was honest and sincere in his beliefs however misguided those beliefs were.

mag28

Bi De old man servant better be Fa Rams newest farm hand

Bob

I mean if u think about it from their perspective u have what's basically Xanxia Omniman standing behind what is said, it's pretty damn hard to disagree even if u dare

Ryan Naquin

Why? Because if you cannot live in the light of your deeds you do not deserve to live.

Anonymous

I'm pretty sure shen yu just grabbed everyone and left without asking opinions. They're probably going to have a chat about who's staying and whose going somewhere else. Probably so.ewhere that wasn't about to feature a cultivator Civil war

Anonymous

Don’t forget the fact that one of the most powerful men in the world, with the backing of the emperor, is there. And gave his verdict. Essentially this is like watching a video of someone committing the crime. Sure, maybe it’s trafficked. But then 1/10th of the US army shows up, along with the chief justice of the Supreme Court. And they say: yep, he’s guilty.

Anonymous

It's really poetic that Yun Ren permanently forced them into the Light and took away the Mist they shrouded their lies in.

Jojiro

For a book publication, I think finding places to seed the idea of how lightning-charged emotions can't be faked throughout the arc would help foreshadow and sell this finale better for sure. Maybe it could even be one of the few "weaknesses" the SMS acknowledge about their lightning techniques, just to make the dramatic irony more delicious. As far as a serial goes, and allowing for the reduced overall plotting that can happen in a serial, this was still satisfying to read.

Gear-2557

Damn, this is great. My only concern is that the ones out fighting the demon sects might come back possessed. At least I hope not.

MatrixM

@Featherweight true, but would they look kindly on someone taking arms against his father? Filial piety is a big deal....then again, the Empire loves Shen Yu for hunting down his son (word of god statement). Buuut... his son was also directly a kinslayer so maybe the rules are different, there (whereas the current Patriarch is not, he's just descended from one) @John Because Chongyun called for his death (death of patriarch's blood) and the mob is working under mob-mentality rules. And reform takes longer as he has to process what he just saw.

Kasinki

What a satisfying ending. Truly spectacular. Thank you very much for the chapter, CF!

MatrixM

I'd like for stuff like Lingering Will to be explained in-story. I don't really read Xianxia so sometimes I don't understand things because it seems assumed knowledge by the reader.

John Grizzly

I'm pretty sure , if I assume correctly, it wasn't really Yun Ren but the lasting wills of the brother and fox lady, or even the will of the mountain. He was made conduit of wills way above his pay grade lol, and totally not something that'll leave lasting benefits/changes to his cultivation in the future. Nope, nossir couldn't be it.

Anonymous

To be fair I don't think that if Sheng does side with the reformists he'll have to face down his father, since it looks like the current Patriarch was almost certainly killed or severely crippled by the lingering wills of Nezuha and Zang Yong.

Duke of Coffee

(He turned around as all of the mist from around the mountain finished ripping itself free. It churned like a storm cloud… and then it launched itself at the Patriarch, a spear of lightning and foxfire.) Fox Karma has come to eat you whole.

Rene Christensen

Imagine being a fox right now as the world comes crashing down and not knowing why the sect is splintering and fighting it out. Though depending on how it's handled the shrouded mountains could end up surpassing the Azure Hills. If they can build up harmonious relations with the spirit beasts the endless war can end and they can turn to cultivating with a healthy land much unlike the Azure Hills which was broken.

Anonymous

Shenhe is the elder that went to the north to fight the demonic hideouts. She was also present when the SMS decided to go along with Jin's demands at the end of the Dueling Peaks arc. Wen is the cultivator that left the SMS to join Nezan and the last wielder of Yun Ren's sword.

Anonymous

Spear of Lightning too. So too did the First Patriarch take his pound of flesh.

Anonymous

Yun Ren reached out… and ripped off the last of the shackles that kept the mist tied to the Mountain.

When a cultivated is strong enough, they can split off parts of their soul - like a ghost..sort of...think obi won Kenobi and Yoda after they "died" They then are there to impart wisdom train guard or in the case of murder...avenge their death.

Oni

Lies, NOTHING is better than maple syrup. This is, however, still quite fun.

Anonymous

Huh, Sheng noted that he felt the last remnants of the Qi of an honest man. I'm fairly certain that the strike was Zang Young and Da Ji's last parting gift.

Anonymous

Tha elder that is currently in the Azure Hills is with a demon that is trying to posses him if I recall.

Marta Barańska

Brilliant. And so many POVs. Love it!

Kat

So there is a Lady Elder named Shenhe, and Wen is her aunt, so I figure that’s close enough, especially since as she was coming up she got shit for being related - now it can work for her

Bonifacio Mario Peña Jr.

A mountain that high would get misty from time to time though. Why wouldn't it be called shrouded mountain if it does?

Now we can go out the shattered mountain lol

CUI13

Hopefully the unintended consequences of this don't include tons of dead mortals the Shrouded Mountain Sect could've saved

Barry Morgan

I figure that Shen Yu and company will probably head north to check out the demonic enclaves next. After all, he was planning to investigate possible demonic activity in the province, including in the Shrouded Mountain Sect but not limited to that. If I'm remembering correctly, at least.

Sebastian Rubin

You would have to weigh those against all the mortals who could have been saved if their Inquisition didn't kill off and cripple their best Cultivators for discovering the truth. And spent so much time persecuting Spirit Beasts - and any mortals with traces of Spirit Beast ancestry. So, on the whole, I thing the mortals will be more safe in the future, not less.

Anonymous

Zengsheng could only wish to be as good at finding opportunities as Chongyun. The difference between someone too fundamentally gutless and stupid to pull it off, and a true guile hero.

Featherweight

Yeah, I hope they swing by Bi De’s place and pick him up. He deserves a comfy retirement somewhere.

Anonymous

Yeah, given both of them were Imperial realm, them lingering on after death makes a lot of sense. Might be that the new Sect will have some ghosts among its Elders.

Catherine

So what happened to master lishu and the rest of the medical pavilion? Did they go with Shen yu to get out of the way or did they stay in the middle?

Nathan Ganesan

Again, we do a bit of trolling around here.

Anonymous

He seems disgusted enough by his great grandfather that him siding with his great granduncle woulf make perfect sense. Time for him to meet the challenge Shenhe faced, of having to prove himself in spite of his treacherous blood. In fairness he does clearly care a lot about his subordinates, in his twisted fucked up way.

Demian Buckle

Thank you for another great chapter.

Anonymous

With that many cultivators fighting a civil war on top of it, it should be called the sundered mountain now.

Marcin

What about those that died coz the SM was too proud or lazy to save ? Like that little bitch that was skipping patrols ?

Azena

I was wondering, has the audiobook been updated yet?

Szymon Szczełkun

He will probably just stand by and remain uninvolved . Since it happened long time ago and not in their generation they wiil probably limit casualities to those in the know about their past that actively halped to keep charade of their ancestor honoru going and those that took arms at patriarch side right now. Anyway when their heads cool of and resentment dissapate a little they will probably not insist to eridicate their whole family lines due too intermerriages that were comon among their clans that connected their clans by blood in complicated way , in all this time that passed since first generation. He will definitely loose his status as young master and fall from grace though. But all in all it may be opportunity for him to see how his creed helds up from different stand point and reform himself

Anonymous

The cuckoo technique died with Lu Ban, it’s not something demonic cultivators can just do. That said Shenhe and her group probably but off more than they could chew with Meiling’s distant relative, so who knows how that will go.

Catherine

I’m pretty sure that in an earlier chapter Bi De acknowledged that his servant was utterly devoted to the house he looked after and whoever lived in it otherwise he’d have invited him to Fa Ram.

Drakenclaw

It was called shrouded mountain because it was always covered in mist. All the time. And it was the mist that still held fragments of will of one betrayed fox waifu and one betrayed chad brother.

Catherine

Thanks for the chapter. I’ve been really looking forwards to this reveal :) “Zang Young, laughed as he lifted children up” - should be Zang Yong I think

Thomas Hendrix

Hmm maybe I missed it. But what happened to the demon that was influencing the father of the guy who got eaten

Xianxia bullshit, the ability of it to have mist is most likely gone now, used to hit the patriarch.

Anonymous

Shen Yu asked if the hanger-ons wanted to come with them as they left. So, I most likely assume they did after seeing what happened in the past.

Anonymous

And Elder Chongyun strikes! Methinks he may end up as the new patriarch after this debacle.

Anonymous

too bad Shenhe wasnt here to see this. To see proof that her aunt Wen wasnt a traitor after all

Melanie Me

I thought the demon guy was related to the Emporer that Tianlan and Xochi (sp) killed ?

Ichypa

The Shrouded Mountain Arc might be over, but I suspect the Howling Fang Mountain Arc is not. We still have to see what happened to Shenhe, what’s going to happen with the foxes, and what’s going to happen with Howling Fang Mountain Mama…although, that might not get addressed until the next volume.

Randall Brynsvold

Yeah, we'll have to see how big a caravan leaves with Shen Yu and the Fa Ram team. I do hope the Medical Pavilion group escapes the crabs-in-a-bucket battle at the end of the chapter.

Randall Brynsvold

Here's the travelogue of Zang Zeng and the demon lady: Epilogue: Butterfly's Wings, 2/8/23 Zeng and his team are in Green Stone Forest on orders to collect reagents for the Inquisitors from the Poison Jadepillar Forest, but he gathers them to reveal that he will be taking them on a new mission into the Azure Hills. v4c19: The Plans of Men, 6/19/23 Zeng apparently went into the Azure Hills, found it horribly unpleasant, and left the Azure Hills to base his information-gathering operations in Yellow Rock Plateau. The demon is getting frustrated. v4c37: The Legend of the Azure Heroes, 8/27/23 Zeng is eating silver-grade rice in Yellow Rock Plateau and getting reports. He wants Tigu to be followed so that he may choose his opportunity to confront her. (The Qi in the rice seems to calm the homicidal rage that the demon lady has cultivated. This seems to be the Qi from Jin and Tianlan along the path of the thousand-li punch that killed Lu Ban and dropped his body in Yellow Rock Plateau.) v4c52: The Grand Marshal, 10/18/23 Zeng is still eating rice, getting reports, and being prodded to act by the demon. He sends his scouts to the north of Azure Hills.

No way to end an arc better than with civil war as they always say

Randall Brynsvold

Yun Ren had made selections of betrayals from the memory crystal to display. The mist sort of took over and made it seem real and visceral to the viewers, but Yun Ren was still the conduit. From Che Han's viewpoint: "He felt like he wanted to vomit as he turned to Yun Ren. The man’s eyes were glowing blue; mist was seeping out of his mouth, and he was shaking slightly."

William Johnson

Shen Yu strides off with the crew. Bi De: Master, should we not stay and watch? Shen Yu: None of that, the interesting part is done and we never look at the explosion. Thanks for the chapter!

Randall Brynsvold

Imagine being a fox and getting a delegation from the new sect leadership wanting to discuss reparations and ongoing relations.

William Johnson

Sheng's part of Bi De's story and his first real rival, who was introduced as a villain but has shown redeeming qualities. Man's 100% coming back, he's set up for the Vegeta arc.

William Johnson

My hope is that Chongyun will at least mitigate the damage since he's trying to keep the sect from imploding by giving the wronged parties a chance to vent their anger, and will then presumably present Shenhe as a new sect master untainted by the crimes of the previous patriarch. I still suspect Shenhe's going to come back from the north heavily injured and full of demonic poison which either Ri Zu or Meiling will have to deal with.

Anonymous

Not Da Ji. Da Ji was long dead before the Mountain opened up the Mist Wall and let in Zang Shengsheng.

Anonymous

Yeah, and that Emperor that Xiaoshi killed is related to Meiling. He's Meiling's Ancestor.

Old Dog

CF will let us know. Don't know how much Travis Baldree has to record or rerecord.

Old Dog

As always, thank you for the chapter, totally awesome chapter.

Old Dog

I'm sure from what was written that Master Lishu and the medical pavilion will stick around to "pick up the pieces" so to speak and tend to those of the reformed sect.

Old Dog

Lu Ban learned the technique from his master, so the technique didn't die, just that disciple.

Thomas Hendrix

Ty this makes much more sense now. I missed the fact that Zeng was not at the sect

D J Meigs

Shen Yu: Also when you stride, it’s got to be in slow-motion. Bi De: Why? Shen Yu: It’s conventional.

Anonymous

I think it was likely the spirits of Ancestor Fox and the Founder combined

Anonymous

But in a more Xianghua/Xiulan sense (prior to the we are now BFF part)

J

So is it implied that even Zang Sheng will be killed?

Anonymous

Nezan couldn't come within a hundred kilometres of the Sect without all their alarms going off. I think he's scrying on events from a distance and laughing himself silly.

ItWasIDIO!!

No no .... no BE more IS a natural disaster we've had several severe reactions to him both of knowing the man & of only knowing the myth/legend

Rynn Kanra

I want to know the full aftermath.

Len

a bit more at the end- IF we wanted to show Zang Zeng is a bit better light would be for him to have a voice at the end calling their FULL motto with the "to protect those we love" in all caps-- or maybe have chongyun or one of the Hans say it . no we have to find out what happened to Shenhe fighting meimei's ... demon uncle/cousin? and find out about zang li's father...there is no way that after 3 days ALL elders are not recalled to reveal the truth/find out if they were...involved. but dang Yun Ren destroyed the sect.

Jeremy

Doubt it seeing his internal narrative. He was thinking Shenhe was descended from the First Patriarch and related to Wen. The plan is probably to have her take the positions to show power returning to the honorable side of the Zang

Len

you know that is a good question. i don't think he will because he knew nothing and was APPALLED/disgusted at the actions of his ancester, i think he'll be at the front of the line attacking his own father and the inquisition and survive, hopefully the remnants in the mist find him worthy of being saved. he was portayed as being a typical young master type, but honorable, him adjusting to the protect those we love will make him so much stronger... zang zeng- bidi's immediate superior, well i think he has lost his cultivation the shock of a chicken just....destroyed him.

Bridd

Still in the Azure Hills trying to make the (not yet too) idiot Elder to try fight against Jin.

Anonymous

No. It was called 'A Seed' and that his Master was planning to start a whole sect/force around Lu Ban, and one of the Demonic Cultivator's mentally thought that with the Demon Seed that contained the Cuckoo Technique being destroyed, it meant that there will be no more Cuckoos in the future. Of course, the Master of the Demonic Cultivator's could be lying, but, I sorta doubt it.

Memememe

Shen Yu just pulling out a set of aviators as he walks away.

Memememe

He’s not a waiting for the popcorn to pop, I think, he’s actively cooking. That spear of lightning and fox fire probably belongs to him.

Truedragon5374

The medics likely ported out with Shen, but will probably return to the Mountain to tend to the injured

Truedragon5374

Awesome chapter. But what's next for Gramps and company? Here's what I think: Gramps is going to separate and go demon hunting in the north. Bi De, RI Zu, and Yun Ren will return to Fa Ram. Thirsty sword girl will to to Fa Ram and become its newest disciple. Fat Han will go to Fa Ram but will eventually return to his clan. Broken Cultivation Man will go to Fa Ram, rebuild his cultivation, then go on to be a wandering cultivator, helping people. The Pavillion medics will return to the Naked Mountain to heal the injured after the 3 day cage match, possibly after a short trip to Fa Ram to trade notes with Mei Mei and exchange some herbs.

Truedragon5374

Jin forbade any of the Shrouded Mountain sect from entering the Auzre hills, but after this there won't Be a SM sect anymore so I think Sheng will be able to see Bi De again and get a rematch with his rival.

Aaron Schwartz

If Shen Yu ripped their face off, does that make him Nicolas Cage? Because I kind of get that vibe from him.

John Grizzly

Guys. I was just made known of this funny video/song that fits the end of this tournament arc. "CHICKEN ATTACK" By the Gregory Brothers xD

Randall Norman Pick

Remember when we saw a man forge a postal service to make his mission easier? Shen Yu just showed the elevated cultivation of that sort of organizational manipulation. He shot a chicken at a mountain and the mountain broke.

Anonymous

And if/when he's got time to do it between his other recordings

Anonymous

We need a Gary Oak. That guy who is kind of a tool, but like, not a completely insufferable one. He just rubs you the wrong way, but he'll still throw down on the right side when its important.

Marcin

I think thats the remains of the fox lady and the actuall patriarch... stirred to life for a moment by Yun Run me thinks..

Marcin

I think she will be brought to Azure Hills by the remains of Shrouded Mountain acolytes that got clapped by Jin. Barly alive and with no other options they will arrive at Jins door begging for help.

Anonymous

Assuming Chongyun wins, Lishu’s best move is to stay. He was beaten down by the old way of thinking, it would be fitting for Ri Zu to have slapped him out of it enough to try again

Artman

I think he is more the typical cultivator, but he has lines he won’t cross. That does makes him a saint compared to allot of them.

John D Jones
“Oh, why did I do this? Do you really wish to know?” Shen Yu asked. He leaned in, and smiled at the man. “Because your sect insulted my grandson.”
There's a reason that the most common title/description of Shen Yu is "monster." Not Great Teacher or Wise Master or Honored Elder, monster. Not for nothing, but Lishu was right when he noted that the SMS saved the most lives. Think a little bit about the early parts of "Beware of Chicken" with the Wicked Blade, Chow-ji and even Sun Ken. Sun Ken butchered villages an exploited the divided state of the sects until he finally screwed with the Verdant Blade and Xiulan went after him. Note that if Sun Ken had taken a different path and not gone near Fa Ram, he'd have survived and likely rebuilt his bandit gang while Xiulan died of demonic poisoning. Chow-ji murdered people and turned them into cultivation pills and had been doing this for quite some time. The Wicked Blade had been a threat in the Azure Hills for centuries before Jin and his shovel ended him. If any of these threats had gone near the SMS territory they'd likely have been found and destroyed within days before they harmed other mortals. So, yeah, the Patriarch, Inquisition and other more corrupt folks are going down, but while it may end up cleaner and better, the SMS is likely going to be greatly reduced for a while. And sure, "Ha-ha, serves them right." Does it serve the mortals that reduced sect will fail to protect right, too? Do those people deserve to suffer because the SMS..."insulted Shen Yu's grandson?" Yep, Shen Yu broke the Shrouded Mountain Sect. But didn't some wise teacher once say, "If you break something, fix it?"

D J Meigs

Well that’s why Shen Yu is considered a typical cultivator and Jin has been a better role model. And yeah whether or not the SMS deserves complete destruction is contested, they’re something of a necessary evil. I don’t entirely agree though. The rot is getting to be too much. It’s actually a small number of people who end up doing the protecting. The moto of strength above all means most of the cultivators who climb the ranks don’t care about the mortals beyond the fact that a whole village getting wiped out looks bad for the sect. Ri Zu’s patient had a team patrolling for monsters and let one slip because one guy didn’t give a shit. With the mentality the sect encourages how often did that happen? The good guys like Ri Zu’s patient and the healing master just get burned out. I would not be surprised if there’s been incidents causing heavy mortal damage that could have been avoided many times before but the inquisition hid it. Now on the question of fixing it, I agree that they maybe shouldn’t just leave. Shen Yu doesn’t care (though I don’t think he would leave a power vacuum unchecked when the threat of demons still exists), but I’m holding out hope that the others will try to give some support. Although I’m not sure their help would be welcomed. It’s also not as if they haven’t done anything, they’ve identified which parts are rotten but perhaps more importantly which parts are sound. their core and techniques are clean as are the vast majority of members and even elders, even if their foundations myths and moto are rot. So there’s actually very little wrong with most of the sect, the patriarch needs changing, and they need to work on their transparency (good timing on the mist lifting) and maybe seek out their real roots, those of the first patriarch, but the trial didn’t just doom the sect it showed them how they could keep going, once they come to terms with the lies.

Enochi

Depends on the thinking. While this might weaken the sect in the short term... this is cleaning out a long festering wound. And shen yu didn't break the sect. The Sect broke itself. He isn't the first to find the truth. Letting the sect clean up there own mess while painful allow them to dedicate themselves to there renewed purpose. Do you think the renewed sect will dedicate less resources to defending the mountain or more?

G

@wonderbread459 Uh no. Lu Ban was a disciple of the guy Shenhe just met. The lady with Zang noted he was so incompetent he couldn't use the technique when he was blasted to yellow rock by Jin. The technique is alive and well.

G

There are those that can extrapolate from incomplete information.

Anonymous

To be truly fair, this was a domino he explicitly didn't see coming. He was fucking with the sect yes, but the trial was fair to the actual charges. He would have probably let them off with the humiliation of D crushing thei young master if that was all the sect had done. He was giddy because the sect was so rotten he got to see it schism without him trying to fuck them over that hard.

Anonymous

It would be interesting if Zang Sheng was actually one of the people teleported out, that way he can join Big D and gramps to fight demons in the north as like a rivalry/friendship thing like Tigu and Xiulan

Mark

I don't understand Shen Yu's answer here: ------------------------------ “Oh, why did I do this? Do you really wish to know?” Shen Yu asked. He leaned in, and smiled at the man. “Because your sect insulted my grandson.” ------------------------------ When/how did the Shrouded Mountain Sect insult Bi De? They didn't even know of his existence before the tournament?

Mark

That's what I thought at first (and you are correct, of course) but initially dismissed it, because it makes even less sense to me: how did they offend/insult Jin? They did everything he demanded after the Duelling Peaks tournament and even showered him with gifts, didn't they?

Len

i would have put Shen Yu's answer as "your sect attempted to kidnap and rape my great grand-daughter"... but the sect attacking jin's disciples, it COULD be seen as an insult. but shrug. it still works. it is a minor -an insult- and shen yu essentially destroyed the sect.

Anonymous

Those reparations were for Jin. This is Shen Yu's revenge. Two very separate matters.

Mark

It's just weird and illogical to me: he investigates the sect for demonic infiltration, declares them innocent (of this specific fact) and still destroys them for the thing that the 1 demonic infiltrator did. It's not simply "big bad cultivator is harsh" unjust, but illogical and without any discernable causal link to me. I really don't get what his beef is with them. (forget their interal shenanigans, it has often been alluded to that Shen Yu has done much worse)

Anonymous

I'm wondering over the question if the self-purged sect will move towards hefty reparations to the foxes for this, or if their new purpose will just be "don't think about it don't think about it" and very enthusiastically walk away from any fox they see. But considering how spread the face-tearing was, I kind of hope they will be forced to the path of reparations or be seen as utter hypocrites by everyone (and not in a deniable way) for saying they purged the problem even while never making amends.

Guy L.

Deeply appreciate dropping the C Bomb. And Gramps just being That Petty is lovely.

John D Jones

@ Mark To paraphrase a quote from the previous chapter, Shen Yu is LEGENDARY for avenging slights against him. It might be best to read his statement as "...your sect insulted MY grandson." Insulting Shen Yu's dearly loved (if adopted) grandson means insulting Shen Yu. Insulting Shen Yu (other than in the kind of bantering way that Meiling did) means he rains Hell down upon you as only a vindictive cultivator in the Imperial realm can. The nature of the insult was that Jin declared "Zang Li" to be an imposter (granted that was due to Jin failing to grasp just how strong his own cultivation was getting) and failing to investigate. Because of that, "Zang Li" got into a position where he and true Shrouded Mountain Sect disciples attacked Jin's friends/family. Besides, technically, Shen Yu didn't destroy the SMS. He simply chose not to intervene to stop them from potentially destroying themselves.

Richter Stormstrike

Heh heh heh. Beautiful. Best ending. I'm cackling so hard I can't catch my breath. Gramps is a hell of a mood |3

I wouldn't bring it up as there is a fair amount of discussion of the implications for this outcome already, but there is at least one major facet that I feel has been overlooked entirely: TSM is currently actively engaged with an extensive and somewhat formidable demonic sect incursion. This could make that go up in smoke. Considering how nuance and bitter compromise are such prevalent themes for this arc, I find it odd to throw that out in favor of a simplistic, convenient catharsis. Big D knows this is the case too since he heard about Shenhe's efforts. I find it unlikely that Big D would passively let Shen Yu throw the whole sect into chaos and render it, at best, paralyzed with infighting without passing comment. He has shown a great deal of temperance, pragmatism and decisiveness with respect to matters like these. Yes, Shen Yu could just ignore him, but he would be remiss if he didn't at least speak up. Maybe Chongyun and the rest are able to get things sorted out quickly and with minimal bloodshed, but it was pretty darn irresponsible to give a complex, but just about benevolent, organization a mortal wound at this juncture. Chongyun wondered how the inquisition dropped the ball with Yun Ren? It's because they were legitimately invested and willing to make an exception for a good cause. They still did all the other stuff, but punishing them for focusing on the real baddies is hardly a good look. Now could you frame this outcome as just? Easily: the propaganda writes itself. But will this result in copious amounts of suffering, death, disharmony and other consequences--often for those who are completely blameless? Hoooh boy, yes. If any on the “kinslayer” side of the conflict survive, you can bet the cycle will start again too: just as bitter if not moreso. This isn't how you permanently put injustices like this to bed. Meanwhile, actual demonic cultivators are up to no good and loving every minute of this, if they know.

Randall Brynsvold

I think the implication was that Elder Chongyun had a plan to salvage the sect and that whoever came to his side would end up on top, which would eventually include his ally Elder Shenhe and her team (including Yingwen), or as many of them as survive the encounter with Yulong, and the medical team (those that stayed). If so, the benevolent part of the sect would survive, losing the parasitic high-living assholes. After the Yun Ren And Mist Show, it would be a war of most of the families against the Patriarch, his direct enforcers among the leadership of the Inquisitors, and their closest allies (the ones who knew the history but enforced the Patriarch's version and benefited directly from this). The noisy three days and nights may have just been a siege of the Patriarch's palace by almost all of the sect. Do you think Zang Sheng will head out to find his father, Zang Zeng, to try to let him know what's happened and what he would have to do in order to return?

Anonymous

Short term it can be argued to be bad but long term it is better and necessary the SMS was corrupt did a lot of shitty stuff even in the present (in the memories we were shown the current patriarch condemning an entire family line to extinction) and the inquisition was an active participant and the good they might do doesn't absolve them from the bad nor does it justify it in any way. The argument that some innocents might die due to this is not exactly perfect you can use it to justify pretty horrible regimes because they keep the people safe

Anonymous

Thankfully, after the latest chapter, we see that Bi Di and Sehn are headed straight over to deal with that demonic incursion.

Anonymous

While I do support nuanced takes, I'm not sure that it's fair to describe TSM as a "complex, but just about benevolent, organization". From what we've seen they're negligent in their protection of mortals, judging by the patrol story. They're internally rife with corruption. And, lest we forget, they have a sect wide core mandate to commit genocide on the foxes for crimes they didn't even commit. They're *still doing that*. As a core tenet and cornerstone of their operations.

Maria Klein

I know this is late so I hope it gets seen. In this chapter it says The Patriarch’s meridians were almost shattered but in a later chapter SHEIN tells bi de that the patriarchs meridians are shattered. Not sure if it was intentional or an oops but wanted to point it out
