March has not been a productive month for Cartoon Logic, but work is underway for sure. Between my restoration workload (see attached, not final screencap and from a low-rez proxy) and some family health matters (not COVID-related), and Bob's own animation workload, putting the final touches on Bugs Bunny Blu-Ray Blow-Out Part 2 and recording Spinach Skrewtny 1942 have fallen to the wayside. But expect the former early next week for sure.

We've also been remiss in taking episode suggestions. Got any? Throw them at us - we're all ears, and it's part of your Patreon perks to get what you paid for! (Please only do so if we haven't used one of your suggestions already.)

Thanks again for your support...

Felix the Cat

id love an episode about tweety birds evolution from clampett to freleng. ive always wondered what happened that made him lose his edge also, best of luck to both of you guys. shit really does happen

cartoonlogic

Damn, we should have done Felix by now. There is an excellent sampler release from Cartoons on Film on the market right now, but it'll likely be the only one in this lifetime, sadly. Maybe we'll get into why in the episode...

I’d love to see one on Porky pigs feat. It’s always been my favorite Tashlin short and I really think it’s a perfect cartoon.

ShyRanger

I already messaged you about my suggestion a few weeks ago, up to you how viable it is right now.

Maybe you could do a series similar to Spinach Skrewtny where you discuss the cartoons on the Porky Pig 101 DVD set. I’d also love to hear you guys talk about the Fleisher Superman cartoons (or at least one of them, anyway). Thanks

cartoonlogic

Yes, I remember! I need to actually play the game before I talk about it at length to give it a fair shake! But it's on my bucket list.

How's about an episode on Jim Tyer? What was his legacy and how did he develop such an eccentric approach to animation? This might be a good guest-star appearance for Charlie Judkins? You could touch on animator fetishism and how animation enthusiasts have certain obsessions with artists like Tyer. There might be a lot to work with here.

How about an episode on Tex Avery at WB? You can discuss how much of a failure Buddy was and the impact Avery had at WB. An episode focusing on the fall of Lantz during the 1950s would also be interesting. You could also focus on Disney, Jack Kinney would make an interesting episode topic. If you really want to torture yourselves, you can do episodes on Pluto, Silly Symphonies, Chip n Dale/Jack Hannah, and Mickey Mouse (knowing your feelings on the character).

Norm McCabe’s unit would be a good discussion (with Hop And Go or Confusions Of A Nutsy Spy as the focus).

cartoonlogic

Doing an analysis of THE BARN DANCE, our favorite Mickey, has been a bucket list item.

What about the Disney Strike of 1941?????

I haven't heard much discussion about the final phase of Paramount's theatrical era when Shamus Culhane was in charge of the studio. I've only seen a few but it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on them.

Some rough ideas... Virgil Ross Rod Scribner Norm Ferguson (didn’t know he worked for Jones!) Bill Tytla Irv Spence John Hubley Gerry Chiniquy Kelly Armstrong as guest The Mad Hatter (Columbia) Cartoons about boxing (Porky and Daffy, Rabbit Punch, Count Me Out, The Kangaroo Kid, Little Bantamweight, etc.) Disney 1941-45: who left, who stayed, best of each year (within that timeframe) Terrytoons by decade? 🤷

I know it's being planned, but Jay Ward would be amazing. Would love to hear you guys discuss how these nobodies made funnier cartoons than Maltese himself.

1. Pre-code cartoons/Incredibly Strange Cartoons. If you can get Steve Stanchfield, Mark Kausler or Greg Ford as guest commentators, that would be great. 2. American animators in Great Britain. I’m a big fan of the British Animated Productions cartoons directed by George Moreno, Jr. ("Bubble And Squeek"). While the David Hand studio Animaland and Musical Paintbox series for Gaumont British Animation certainly have their moments, it’s their theatrical ads I love. 3. The story guys - Ted Sears, Dick Huemer, Joe Grant, Bill Turner, Jack Ward, Ben Hardaway, Melvin "Tubby" Millar, Tedd Pierce, Warren Foster, Mike Maltese, etc. Ever notice how many utterly bizarre cartoons Cal Howard gets story credit for? 4. Voice artists with special guest Keith Scott.

Say, nice post Thad, but , that really from one of the Our Gangs? (Little Rascals’)

Paul Christoforos

Awesome, yet what about The Fox and the Grapes (1941; Fox and Crow, Color Rhapsodies) with special Guest, the Great Mark Kausler, too???????

Paul Christoforos

Anyway, I hope your families are way more healthier this month, Thad & Bob.

Hello Thad and Bob. I suggested this via e-mail a while ago, but I would be interested in a podcast discussing an animated feature. I'd love to learn more about the production history, legacy, and your opinions of Disney's Dumbo specifically. Thank you for the great podcasts, and I wish you guys well!

A Jack Kinney-directed Disney cartoon is long overdue - the choice is up to you two.

Paul Christoforos

Hey, what about a Ward Kimball episode????

Paul Christoforos

What about a Preston Blair episode with guests Kelly Armstrong and Mark Kausler?????????

Paul Christoforos

A Paul Sommer episode, maybe??????????

Paul Christoforos

...with special guest, Charlie Judkins, musician?

Paul Christoforos

Oh, maybe an Alex Lovey episode, so that I’m ambidextrous like he was, with special guests, composer Charlie Judkins, and HB guy, Tony Benedict???????????

Paul Christoforos

That’s a fact, did ya know that????????????

I'd love to see on episode on Krazy Kat and how, unlike Popeye, his transition from comics to animation wasn't as smooth.

Paul Christoforos

Hey, Bob Jaques, love your video commentaries, but can’t you please do an Animator’s Commentary on Eddie Fitzgerald’s “Tales of Worm Paranoia?” With Glen Kennedy and Kelly Armstrong, as guests?? -Paul Christoforos

Here's a couple of cartoons I'd like to hear you talk about: "Rebel Rabbit" an "Mickey's Service Station"
