Now operating in Miami, the Fleischer studio begins to systematically rid itself of everything that made it the greatest cartoon studio of the decade. Crews shift, droves of Hollywood animators and storymen arrive to help with Gulliver's Travels, and the sailor is now getting shoehorned into inappropriate stories. We get one more Popeye two-reeler in Technicolor, a step down from the previous two but still a triumph for director Dave Tendlar nonetheless, and one last one-reel masterpiece that's likely the greatest cartoon about gaslighting ever (all concocted by J. Wellington Wimpy).

Cartoons discussed:

 - Customers Wanted
- Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp
- Leave Well Enough Alone
- Wotta Nitemare
- Ghosks is the Bunk
- Hello- How Am I?
- It's the Natural Thing to Do
- Never Sock a Baby

(Apologies for the lack of communication. Along with our busy schedules, I had a feline emergency and came down with COVID-19. Things are moving smoothly and we hope to have our Bugs Bunny Blu-Ray Part 1 (!) podcast up this month,)

Hohoho, this’ll be good! Hello, How am I is a classic! Sorry about your cat and your COVID case, by the way. That must have sucked but at least it’s all over with! And, oooooh.....an episode on the Bugs Bunny Blu-Ray? Neato! Christmas came early!!!

MisterZulu!

Sorry that you got sick--hopefully, you're doing better. Thank you for everything. :D

Hope you're feeling better! About 1939 in general, Popeye wasn't alone. 1939 was a crappy year industry wide. When I watched the WBs in chronological order, 1939 was a TRIAL to get through. Everything seemed to get stale all over that year .

Bertrand Russell would have had a field day with Hello How Am I, one of the funniest cartoons I've ever seen in my life... It's been a long time since I've seen these but the Miami Fleischer cartoons have some of the most annoying voice acting I've ever heard, there are times when it's almost like nails on a chalkboard lol

Are the 50s blu rays not happening, or are they just in limbo?

cartoonlogic

They’re unofficially cancelled until further notice. Had nothing to do with sales, just their redirecting limited resources (and of course, I think we can all agree those are better spent on Tex Avery).

Another phenomenal episode! Hope you guys get better in such uncertain times. This truly is the beginning of the end; the Miami studio somehow couldn't screw up most shorts with Poopdeck Pappy in an otherwise mediocre run of the remainder Fleischer Popeye shorts.

I hope you’re doing better (and kitty too). I second your thoughts on Hello How Am I. Identity theft/evil counterpart plots are usually solid. Great voice acting with Wimpy impersonating Popeye.

How come Pinto Colvig's Fleischer voices sound like he's got some major constipation?
