Clicked so fast once I saw your reaction was up and blocked off my lunch break to rewatch with your vid. One of those movies that sticks with you long after watching, easily favourite movie of the year if not far longer. Such a beautiful message of kindness and growth.

Tbf, you have seen Michelle Yeoh (Evelyn) in a movie before. She was the aunt in Shang-Chi!

Connor Ellis

You do know the actress playing Evelyn. She was Shang-Chi's Auntie.

I LOVE when an absurdist film can bring me to tears 😮‍💨🫶🏻

She's great in everything she's in...love that she got her own movie as the lead. Very deserving.

This reaction video is my favorite so far of Seb's...100% agree that this film gives you all the filmmaking feels...so hard to describe it, but it's like I'm cheering on the filmmakers during the film to keep twisting my brain in all the best ways. I'm screaming "yes, yes, yes" as they use so many great filmmaking techniques to perfection. This film is a masterclass in editing, pacing, & cinematography IMO. It feels like there are a ton of special effects in the film, but, in reality the editing is doing a lot of the work that most films today overly rely on special effects for. This is also one of those films that is even better when viewing a second time I think. This film makes me so happy. Also, yes to David Lynch films. Where do I sign up for the SebArthouse tier?

Jenny Slate!!! (the lady with the Pomeranian) she was in Gifted as the teacher :)) the two buttplug fighters were the stunt directors for Shang-Chi too! one of them was actually Death Dealer! (the ninja with the cool mask) their inspirations for choreography are, of course, old Hong Kong movies AND ANIME it IS Po’s dad’s voice actor! the vfx team consisted of ONLY FIVE people and they worked on the effects AT HOME (because of the pandemic) and one of the Daniels (the directors) had a role too haha he was the guy that was into kinky stuff

Love this movie! What really struck me was how the film managed to discuss generational trauma and how parents place so many expectations on their kids. And it was able to convey it SO well and so creatively. The film touches on SO many different topics, but that was one that really stuck out to me -- and Evelyn's realization at the end there, with her father, just makes me weep every time I watch this. When she finally has the courage to "break the chain" of emotional abuse.

i really encourage you to rewatch this in your own time! cause once you get past the absurdity, it’s extremely touching and deeper than let on. and yea, since you asked, i was on some shit the first time i ever watched this and the visuals just blew my puny little brain lmfao but god this is probably my favorite film of all time. im so glad you reacted to it. there was just so many things to grasp from it and this is literally like my 5th rewatch and i’m STILL picking up new things.. how the bagel and googly eyes are inverses of each other, representing the balance of bad and good like yin and yang aka joy and waymond, while the endless cycle of the laundromat represents evelyn. i think this story also particularly just hit hard for me as an asian second generation immigrant daughter. joy/jobu is quite literally the most relatable character i've come across, and this movie pains me most because it made me think about my parents’ past and how much happier they would’ve been if they had just made a different choice in their youth (that potentially being without me). you also mentioned how you would never let it slide if your parents outright called you fat but its literally what everyone who relates to this film has been raised dealing with; receiving degrading words and actions that are considered abuse these days whilst letting it go under the guise of love and "a different time". the actress for joy portrayed her depression and nihilism so so so well. evelyn took the time to understand her daughter and how the intergen trauma affected her parenting style and in doing so, saved joy from suicide, aka the everything bagel, which is a revelation i and so many others continue to wish for ourselves and our parents. i could talk endlessly about this film whew!
