Honestly, I do think Charlie was being a bit of a shitty friend to Tao in the second half of the season (this is coming from the perspective of someone that's been in Charlie's shoes a few times). Tao was completely overdoing it at the beginning, yes. But Charlie makes Tao doubt himself for sticking up for not only his friend but himself. And prioritizing protecting Nick's relationship with his asshole friends over Tao's wellbeing is shitty. It's a tough spot being in Charlie's shoes. Having to be with someone closeted (good person like Nick or bad like Ben, same either way) can put a lot of strain on the relationships with people around you. This is why I definitely disagree with the idea that Ben and Nick aren't putting Charlie in the same situation. They are. The difference of Nick being nice doesn't make the problems of being with someone closeted disappear. I learned my own lessons about being a good friend with this. Again, Charlie is put in a difficult situation. And he's not doing everything perfectly. He's making a lot of mistakes. But that's part of the learning process. I'm completely sympathetic with him. Tao's personality doesn't make things easier for Charlie. But I also don't want to blind myself and say he was being a perfect friend to Tao. Everyone is making mistakes here. Nick, Tao, and Charlie alike. But they're teenagers. They're facing these scenarios for the first time. Everything about their decision screams inexperience. But that's what I like about this show. It takes me back to when I had to learn all these things myself.

I never saw any fights because by the time I even realized they were happening, they were already surrounded by students and I couldn't see shit. I did see the aftermath of one, though. There was blood EVERYWHERE. Even trailing all the way from the cafeteria (where it happened) to the nurse's office. Turns out one of the guys was wearing multiple massive rings. They kinda acted as brass knuckles.

ya'll notice Charlie's eating disorder too? O.o :( I think in the novel they explain that Tao was the one who outed Charlie by accident. Might explain why he's overprotective (guilt) Great Reaction Seb! xoxo <3

I really don't hate Ben. I hate what he did, but I feel sorry for him since he's the closeted gay/bi boy that just can't work up the courage to do what Nick did. I have no idea what happens in the comic, but I could certainly see a redemption story in his future. BTW, have you ever watched Donnie Darko? I love the movie, but it's a serious mind-fuck!

alejandro valles

can't hate him fully, but what he's doing is really fucked up. he's taking all of his internalized homophobia out on Charlie, and that's soo far from being close to okay

Tao can be too much, I appreciate that he is a very loyal and protective friend but he is so insecure about his friendships and he can be way too intense. I do understand that being the last to know can hurt, but he did not make it easy to tell him.

I think Tao's problem is he lived through Charlie's bulling the year before and saw what it did to him and I think Tao is incredibly protective and really scared for Charlie

When you said you think you hate Harry more than Ben, I literally blurted out "just wait", lol

Charlie's lack of eating is so much more obvious on additional viewings. 😢

Look... Seb. I think you're forgetting these kids are 14. Thinking is not irrational at that age hahaha so Tao.. yeah.. let's just blame it on the teenage hormones and stupidity. I mean he's definately being mean to Charlie which is a little dramatic, but everything is just piling up so I can see where he's coming from.

Dennis Verner

Yes, as Jeff above pointed out, they only hint at it in the series but Charlie has an eating disorder.
