If don't care for machines: this post is probably not going to be interesting for you.

If you do care for machines: this post might still not be interesting for you. Feel free to skip this one. Just like when Scraps gave a kiss to this friendly neighbor corgi and then moved on like nothing ever happened. Sorry corgi. Scraps just isn't ready to settle down yet.

I've been dreaming about getting a CNC machine for a long time but I never felt like I had enough space for one. Honestly I was just a bit intimidated by it all, and I worried that I'd have this huge machine that would just end up collecting dust instead of creating it.

Need a new slogan? You can have this one for free:

DON'T COLLECT DUST: CREATE IT.

I ended up deciding on AvidCNC's 4x2' machine, because:

1. they reached out and asked if I wanted one (!!!!)
2. you can swap out the spindle for a plasma cutter (!!!!) so I could use it to cut steel (!!!!!!)
3. but honestly, I think the main reason was because the person who I talked to there (hi Sami!) was so fricking nice and helpful.

The machine arrived as a kit, and I spent Thanksgiving weekend putting it together. It was a lot of work, but also really nice to spend that time getting to know the machine. I've named her CNCelia. It's my finest naming work.

Two days ago, I made my first cut! It required a lot of virtual hand holding from Sami but it still made me feel SO POWERFUL. I don't know if you get the same feeling when learning to use a new tool, but to me it's exhilarating. It just feels like it opens up this whole new world of making, and I am pretty excited to settle down in CNC land.

CNC authorities, this is my formal citizen application. My portfolio isn't terribly impressive, all I have so far is a 🙂

XOXO
Simone
