Some extra views of Eric in the Akuma Maru.

For anyone who might be interested, as I develop this little series, I actually do a bit of inventive research for background and for place-names. I want it to be somewhat believable and somewhat consistent.

So, for example, I've made references to Sirius Sector. Sirius is the brightest star in our night sky and a close stellar neighbor at 8.6 light years away. It forms a rough elongated tetrahedron with the Sun, Procyon, and Alpha Centauri - our closest stellar neighbor at 4.1 light years distant which I have also referenced. Proxima is the smallest dimmest star of the three stars in the Alpha Centauri system. Proxima b, its planet, is a real place - although no one knows what it looks like.

The Khemet System - where Dmitri & Eric were loading cargo - is based on Egyptian names. Khemet means "Black Land" and refers to the fertile area around the Nile. the Mars-like planet the space station is circling is called Deshret, meaning "Red Land" and refers to the deserts of Egypt. Deshret itself is circling a planet similar to Saturn - which the Egyptians called Heru or Apis "Horus Bull of the Sky". Heru is the actual Egyptian name for the god we call "Horus" which is the Greek version of the name. Since Deshret is in orbit around a gas giant similar to Saturn, I thought naming it Heru would be appropriate.

The water world in one panel of this series I named Apanohualoyan "The place where one must cross water" - the eighth level of the nine levels of the Aztec underworld - "Mictlan". Look up the trials that the Aztecs believed the dead had to endure if you're interested - pretty horrific!

Today's planet is called Gleann Nimhe (pronounced Glan Neva) "Poisoned Glen" from Irish Gaelic. It orbits the gas giant Balor - a one-eyed ogre from Irish legend. I also named the other inhabited moon circling this gas giant Dobhair (Doar) which is a small Irish-speaking parish in County Donegal on the Northwest coast of Ireland. I decided to call this system Eiri Na Greine (Eye-ree Nuh Gray-neh) "Sunrise".

So, I hope that some of you might like this little insight into some of my more esoteric creative processes.

Enjoy!
