While chasing the Headless Rider, Celty, through the streets of Ikebukuro, police officer Kinnosuke Kuzuhara unintentionally collides with Saki Mikajima, who is walking with her boyfriend Masaomi. Celty uses her powers to try and save the two from any serious damage, but the impact bizarrely causes Kinnosuke and Saki to switch bodies. Kinnosuke's body, with Saki's consciousness inside, is still seriously injured and rendered comatose as a result of the accident. Recovering much quicker than Saki, Kinnosuke (in Saki's body) makes Masaomi aware of the situation and begrudgingly agrees to play the part of Saki—including posing as Masaomi's girlfriend—as they wait for Saki to recover, or for the swap to somehow be reversed.
