I think this show's focus on his family is based on the many books and interviews that were done about Pablo by people close to him(especially his son and wife, I think). I think we have more info on Pablo's family life than on his criminal enterprises. I never actually got to read these books(a guy's personal life is also not that interesting to me, I'd be more interested in knowing about the business side too. And also, Carillo is based on more than one character, I bet. But I think he's based on Jaime Ramírez who died in an epic ambush by the Medellin Cartel, but he wasn't on a full police convoy, he was in a car with his family and police escort when he got ambushed and killed. I'm pretty sure Pablo wasn't there to finish him off too xD.
