The real life murderer, whose crimes was the inspiration for this film, was identified 16 years after the release. Bong Joon-ho said that during filming he was obsessed with thinking about what the actual murderer would look like, something that you can certainly see reflected in the lead character and his method of trying to figure out people by looking at their faces.
