Been so long since I've seen this. Can't to get home from work.

these were all real skies/fields. Very little CGI existed at this time (especially for small moments in smaller movies), other than practically, the only other way to do backgrounds/skies was matte paintings

Shanelle, that story you told about your father, and the cul-de-sac, and the spray-painted bases, and playing wiffle ball absolutely made my day. Seriously.

The reason Shoeless Joe says "There were eight of us" is because the eight players implicated in the "Black Sox scandal" were banned from baseball and never played in the majors again. There was a not-as-memorable film that came out a year before "Field of Dreams" called "Eight Men Out" which could almost be a prequel of sorts as it details how the players accepted money to throw the 1919 World Series.

I'm SO glad you got to this one. My take has always been that this has nothing to do with Joe and the White Sox getting to come back, or the field being a catalyst for people to cross over. For me, it's about Ray being allowed to repair his relationship with his father. He's regretted missing out on that, and gets to finally realize his dream, by slaying his past demons and navigating each piece of the story he relates to us about how they fell apart from one another. I've heard many interpretations, and it says many things to many people. I've even heard theories of Terrence being dead from the beginning. One thing I did want to mention was the players were thrown out of baseball, because of the 1919 World Series, so they could in no way have been middle aged or still looking that good in 1989. I think you may have missed the year in the opening. The vintage uniforms, gloves, etc. are supposed to invoke the early 20s style. So happy you liked this one. I think you'll enjoy the You Tube comments. P.S. - You are only the second person I have ever heard say "If you build it, they will come," but the other was a reactor also. Maybe it's a thing.

I wasn't expecting the "If you build it" line so early in this movie. I always thought it was "they" as well.

It's not a local thing, I've noticed the "they will come" misquote from pretty much the time that the movie first came out. I assume it's from people that don't understand the point of the movie, and think based on the final scene of cars streaming to the field that the plot of the movie is "farmer builds ballfield to earn millions from ticket sales to save his farm."

Yes I thought even at the end we'd hear "they will come" but the daughter really is responsible for relaying the info. the misquote runs deep!

For the end scene (the zoom-out of all the cars driving in) they asked all the locals around to be in the movie, which included a few of my relatives who lived in a neighboring town. It is a completely practical shot. Also a fun fact... while almost impossible to spot, 2 confirmed extras in the Fenway scenes are a pair of young friends who would later find their own film fame, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Hmmm was it me or was there no sound?
