I know you said you want to steer clear of Terry Gilliam for a while (forever?), but I'd just like to put in a good word for The Fisher King, which would probably have been the best starting point anyway. It's a much more grounded film with fantastic performances from Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, Mercedes Ruehl and Michael Jeter.
