The lines the General quotes at the beginning are from a Rudyard Kipling poem called "The Winners": "What the moral? Who rides may read. When the night is thick and the tracks are blind A friend at a pinch is a friend, indeed, But a fool to wait for the laggard behind. Down to Gehenna or up to the Throne, He travels the fastest who travels alone." There is another small section of poem from the same time that we speak aloud about this time every year where I come from, to honour the soldiers in this (and later) wars: "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." This movie is a fitting tribute to that terrible war, definitely. The way it was shot was incredible - the camera following them across a crater full of water, then later following overhead as Will pushes through dozens of soldiers. Then the scene with the flares being shot overhead... and the scene where Tom dies, and we see him getting paler and paler all in the same shot. It's just a technical masterpiece. There's another film shot like this from a few years back, that also won awards, called "Birdman", it's a very interesting film. Otherwise for another powerful war movie (though there isn't as much war in it as people expect), Hacksaw Ridge is another incredibly emotional film. And for something completely different, the TV series 'Sherlock' stars Doctor Strange and (young) Bilbo, and later on you'll see that lieutenant with the flares who impressed you early in this film. Each episode is like a mini-movie, about 1.5hours long, so I'd recommend watching the first episode in your movie time and see if you like it (you will :D)

You should watch Band of Brothers. Yes, should absolutely watch "band of Brothers" which is based on a true story as well. Its a mini series of 10 ep that follows the 101s airborns "easy company" through World War 2 and I think everybody should watch that show at least once in their lives.
