A peek behind the curtain at Second Dawn...

I'm sorry this is a day late, everyone. I came down with a cold last week and my schedule was thrown off. I'm feeling much better now, and I'm back on track. 😊

And I'm very excited for Part 16! Again, the visuals were a challenge as I wanted to bring as much realism as possible. The story was fun to write as well; although for different reasons than usual.

As always, I'm so eager to hear what you think! 💖

EDIT: I wasn't happy with one of the images and I edited dialogue for clarity... 😁

Live reaction go! The first page is such an exciting place to start. Jill knows she’s always under surveillance, but she doesn’t ‘know’ it; the curtain’s only just being pulled back for her, and unlike Holly she’s yet to truly see inside the operation. I have to wonder if she’ll start behaving differently when she’s fully internalised just how on display she is at all times, or whether she’s already resigned herself to that assumption. I love Xu here, too, defending the girls’ interiority. He’s a passionate believer in the power of his operation to properly reshape men into women, and in the liberating power of femininity. And he’s a Big Softie™, too (don’t look at Privilege Level Zero). Even, in the next page, defending Adele to Kaschak! If I were to have to be kidnapped (and not into the waiting arms of *my* little universe) I think, overall, I’d pick Xu. “There are those whose gender is not as rigid as it is for others.” — Clever to flatter Kaschak’s likely belief in his own masculinity. Kaschak, I imagine, is probably cut from the Davis cloth; probably believes he would immediately kill himself rather than submit. He could never be one of the girls. (The girls wouldn’t want him.) Nervous about the phrasing of “Holly will be retired” though. The view into Xu’s history! Incredible. And he looks so sad when he’s speaking of his past. Almost makes me feel sorry for the old bastard. LMAO at the duelling philosophies. Xu: me when I’m reading the philosophical bits. Kaschak: me when I’m reading the hot bits. Darkly hilarious that he doesn’t need to sell these women, too, that it’s all instead part of the theatre. Although, I guess, imagine how many security guards he’d need if he kept them all! Might need some sort of… dormitory… (sorry) And then we meet Olivia and I definitely don’t feel sorry for Xu any more! Even as uncomfortable as he seems with Kaschak’s crass attitude. More references to making history! I remember Dr Dawson raising it ages ago. Can’t wait to be horrified by what this turns out to be! Oh my God. Cliffhanger! Welp, time to go to sleep until the end of the month to shorten the time until I find out what this is about… (Also I’m glad you’re feeling better!)

OMG... Xu... If one would turn a blind eye to the kidnapping of innocents and their sale after forced feminization, he's kinda cool guy... an artist, philanthropist if he's like Leonardo da Vinci then Jill is his Mona Lisa or maybe if he's like Michelangelo then Jill is his La Madonna della Pietà... but who is our Emory then... ohhh wait I know... 5th Element... supreme human being... able to create all of this... ❣️❣️❣️ P.S. The bet on whether Adele will submit to Jill or not reminds me of the movie "Trading Places" and the bet between the Randolph & Mortimer brothers for one dollar...

Watching Xu and Kaschak talk like this makes my skin crawl. I know it's fiction, but still. I would love to see a spoiler in which Holly gets reunited with her estranged mother and the father whom she taught dead, even if Thomas Monroe is now Tammy. I hope they both end up in jail...or better yet, as food for worms. In Kaschak, the worms will feed very well indeed, as will the crows. Glad to know you're feeling better, I had to battle a nasty pneumonia for a while here too.

E, is Xu actually saying what I think he's saying with "a reminder of where I've been"? Is he a transman forced by abuse during childhood seeking a means to revenge as a man? It would explain his motivation to transform men into women. If that's what you're suggesting this is really something important, wow! Yes/No?

MaggieHeels

I'm also sharing that thought with you... that picture of small girl is extremely suspicious...

Ella Cherry

It’s always a delight to see you building your characters so well, makes the story so much better!

Wow, pelicanboss' comment totally threw me off! It hadn't even crossed my mind when reading the episode, but damn, it makes sense! The one-on-one between Mr. Xu and Kaschak, very interesting. Two totally different points of view, one deep and philosophical, from a sociopath who has "invested" himself in the role of God... or "Avenging Angel" (we'll see if Pelicanboss' theory has hit the nail on the head) and the other from a tawdry, dirty, horny, bored millionaire sociopath who doesn't know what to do with his vast amounts of money.... Based on Mr. Xu's words, and Jill addressing the drone at the end, it seems to me that the visit to the hot springs was not as innocent as it seemed .... Aaaah!!! ¡¡¡¡¡Emory I love you and hate you in equal parts, this is worse than LOST!!!!! ¡¡¡¡¡Questions, theories and more and more and more and more questions!!!!! I hope it has an ending (no rush, I think there's still story for a while) well tied and that it answers all the questions!!!! hehehehe.😉 PS: Where is Holly?, will we meet Gina and.... Olivia?, how are Connor and Ryan? Will we meet the Coven, its components and how it works...? And the toys...? AAAAhhh!!! more and more questions!!!!! I love your work Em!😍

Your graphic artistry excellence is closely rivaled by your plot direction and dialogue writing.

"We'll drink to those who find freedom in the most unexpected of places." I hate to give Xu any credit but that's a great line.

emoryahlberg

All I can say for now is that you’ll learn more about the girl in the photo relatively soon. 😊

emoryahlberg

Aww. Fin, thank you! As ever, my goal is for each image to feel like a screenshot from a film. I finally think I might be getting close!

Tiki D

I wonder how is Conner/Connie doing?

emoryahlberg

Thank you so much, Ella! I really had fun writing Xu's dialogue for this one. He may be despicable, but at least he has a point of view! 🙂

emoryahlberg

I totally understand how you feel about Xu and Kaschak's conversations - they can definitely be unsettling. But hey, that's what makes them such great villains, right? I'm sorry to hear that you battled pneumonia! I hope you're feeling much better now! 💖

emoryahlberg

Thank you so much, ckarya! I'm glad you found the conversation between Xu and Kaschak interesting - it's always fun to explore the different perspectives of characters in a story. And you're right, things may not be as innocent as they seem at the hot springs... As for Holly, Gina, Olivia, Connor, Ryan, and the Coven... well, let's just say that they all have their roles to play in the story. 😉

emoryahlberg

It hasn't been all that long since Jill so Conner / Connie last. So... still stuck in the hole that is "Privilege Level 0." 😬

stacy C

I didn't realise Xu was so sentimental.....or more like he's just trying to justify everything he's done....hmmm probably more like it. x

Like the mythical king Maegor, he thinks history will absolve him for helping develop and bankroll "faster" "more thorough" and "safer" transition methods. Spoiler alert, History won't.
