How Steam works with Hunt and Snare

Hunt and Snare will still be primarily developed through funding on Patreon. We do not expect Steam Early Access to be able to support the development itself (generally Early Access is just a fraction of a fraction of what full games can sell on Steam), but rather allow us to contract some work from outside (guest writers, additional artwork, sounds and music from a composer, and so forth), and allow patrons to get easier access to builds.

Patrons (You <3) will continue to get special Discord roles, developer posts, and early access to builds. In addition, after pledging for a total of $30 USD, you can now request a Steam key from us (continue reading for more details and how to obtain a key from us).

The big change is that once you have a key, you can claim the game on Steam and then use Steam’s updater to save a massive amount of hassle and space with downloads! Steam automatically chops the build up and only updates what’s needed and Steam servers are lightning fast.

Our build releases will continue to be split up beginning with a Patreon build. Patreon builds will still be hosted like before, but will also be uploaded as a Steam “beta branch”. If you own the game on Steam (either by purchasing it, or by receiving a key from us), you will be able to use a “beta branch” password (that will be posted with the Patreon build post) to download the Patreon build through Steam. The Steam version will leave its “beta” state after no less than a week or two of testing and then become live to any Steam owners of the game. During that time we can continuing polishing the build and receive feedback from Patreon supporters. Generally the testing period will only be extended past its minimum duration of a week if something is discovered that needs to be fixed.

Raw explanation:

 • Patreon build: This will stay identical to how we currently share Patreon builds and will always be the most up to date version (including any changes made to the Steam “beta branch”).
 • Patreon Steam “beta” build: This is the Patreon build, but on Steam. When we post a new Patreon build, a Steam “beta branch password” will provided on Patreon for anyone that owns the game on Steam to download the Patreon build through Steam instead. Downloading through Steam will be faster and require less data to be downloaded.
 • Steam build: After no less than a week or two of testing and bug fixing on the “beta branch”, the Patreon build will go live for all users that own the game on Steam.
 • Public build: This will stay identical to how we currently share public builds.

How do I claim and use my key?

First and foremost, you MUST check the amount you’ve pledged in total; Once you’ve pledged a total of $30 USD (note that VAT is not counted in) and haven’t already requested or received a key, you are eligible to request a key from us. We currently do not have an easy system to do the check for you, so you will have to go to Patreon and check your billing history and confirm you have pledged the amount overall (you can check your pledge history from here).

Once you have checked it, and are 100% sure you have pledged the required amount, you can go to the Hunt and Snare Steam key request form, read the rules carefully, fill your information in, and then submit it to us.

Do note that if you request a key without confirming your total pledge, you risk getting locked out of a key. We cannot just give away keys, we must confirm you, and make sure you have pledged the right amount, and are the correct person requesting the key.

After you have sent a key request, it will take a few days for us to confirm and process it, and then we will send you your key in an email. Do note that we do not check the requests daily, so it may take sometime to get a key! ^^

To redeem a key, you must have a Steam account (you can create a Steam account here) and have the Steam client installed on your computer (you can download a Steam client here). After launching the client and logging in, click on 'ADD A GAME' in the bottom left and then click 'Activate a Product on Steam…' (Also available in the Games menu at the top). Then read and follow the steps to enter the code you received by email from us.

Raw explanation:

 • Check your lifetime pledge: You must have pledged a total of $30 USD to Hunt and Snare (note that VAT is not counted in). Check your pledge history from here.
 • Re-read the rules and fill in the key request form: Note that you must use your Patreon name and Patreon email, or else we can’t fill your key request. Also, note that false requests will be flagged and you will not be able to get a key in the future. Request your key using this form.
 • Wait for an email with your key: We will process key requests as quickly as we can, but currently we don’t have an easy nor a quick way to check those, so it will take some time to process requests.
 • Click 'ADD A GAME' and then 'Activate a Product on Steam...' in Steam: Follow the steps in the wizard to redeem the Hunt and Snare key you were emailed.

Accessing the newest Patreon release on Steam

Each Hunt and Snare Patreon release comes with a Steam “beta password”. This will allow you to download the Patreon release on Steam if you bought the game on Steam or redeemed a key from us. It is fairly straightforward process.

Once you have bought or redeemed Hunt and Snare on Steam, you can right click on the Hunt and Snare name in your 'LIBRARY', select 'Properties', click the 'BETAS' tab, paste the password into the 'Enter beta access code to unlock private betas' field, and then click 'Check Code'. If the code is correct, the drop down menu will now have the new Patreon build. Once selected, Steam will automatically update Hunt and Snare for you.

If you’re not in a rush to have the latest build as soon as possible on Steam or wish to opt out of the “beta”, you can also wait in the 'NONE' beta branch (it’s the default, if you haven’t ever changed it) and Hunt and Snare will automatically update once the Patreon build goes live for everyone who has a Steam version.

Raw explanation:

 • Right click on 'Hunt and Snare' in your Steam 'LIBRARY' and click Properties: This will open up a new dialog to change some settings related to Steam and Hunt and Snare.
 • Click the 'BETAS' tab on top of the Hunt and Snare properties: This will allow you to opt into specific Patreon builds on the day they’re released. You can also opt out of Hunt and Snare “beta” releases here, and just wait for the main Steam release(s).
 • Paste Steam “beta password” into the field and click 'CHECK CODE': The Steam “beta password” will be included in every new Patreon build post on Patreon.
 • Click on the drop down box and select the newest build: Steam will now switch your build to match the Patreon build you used the Steam “beta password” from.
 • To switch back to the main Steam build: Go to the same drop down box in the 'BETAS' tab, and select 'NONE'. Your build will now update automatically with the regular Steam releases.

Censoring on Steam

Hunt and Snare, is not censored anywhere in game. Only the Steam screenshots and video have censoring because Steam requires game’s store pages to be clean even when they’re behind an age gate. The version on Steam is just as uncensored and porny as the Patreon version.

There are no uncensor patches nor any fiddling with files required.

Raw explanation:

 • Steam store: The artwork and video is censored only because Steam doesn’t allow uncensored public images on the store.
 • Steam build: The Steam build is fully uncensored.

Can I somehow hide what I'm playing on Steam?

Sadly not. This is a feature that has been requested by many over the years, but Valve hasn't allowed it. Maybe one day Valve will allow that on Steam, but today is not the day. Fear not!

For here is a solution and option!

You can create a new account on Steam for free, and then use that account to store your adult games (such as Hunt and Snare) hidden away from your family and friends! Steam allows you to quite easily switch between accounts, and purchase NSFW games on the safe account.

Changing between accounts, once you have your NSFW account, is done via the Steam Client and from the top menu. Click Steam and then Change Account... from the sub menu <3

It's awesome that you're game will be available on steam. I also figured out why I wasn't able to access the patreon build for the game, I forgot that a couple months back I had to suspend most of the patreon accounts I was supporting due to a lack of funds

Timothy

Okay, forgive me if you already answer this. Are we able to buy the game from the Steam Store soon? Or do we have to become a patreon?

rufflenecks

You will be able to buy Hunt and Snare on Steam, but I don't have an exact date yet, but next month most likely ^^

SirMalo

I will buy all the keys and one day i'll get a package with 1000 old rusty rl keys from Ruffle. =3 With those keys i shall open every hole...errrrm i mean good stuff with steam, me like that. <3

rufflenecks

Hah! Good luck! My holes only open to a certain key shaped like a certain hare ^^

Super excited got my steam account ready to go with wishlist and follow. cant wait!

This is sadly a question that is very hard to answer to, because the only proof I have is my own mindset. I personally pledge to a lot of games on Patreon, and I've seen the effect you describe, and I understand how frustrating it can be (and is). I have worked on games industry before, mostly indie studios though, and I've worked on games for Steam, iOS, and PSN and seen how the stores function, and my experience with Patreon (since early 2017) has been far superior than anything else in the eight years prior to Patreon; The feedback and the interaction with patrons and public players, is just insanely inspiring and fun, and I don't personally see myself just "ignoring" this platform. The Patreon is our "long term goal", making games beyond just Hunt and Snare with fans, where as the function of Steam is primarily to expand our reach. Obviously we aren't going to ignore Steam either, but Steam is effectively less about the community, and more about the game, where as Patreon is more evenly about community and the game. Also, as you've played the public release when we started, I hope Hunt and Snare feels and looks a lot better now! I know a lot of people disliked the hybrid faces we started with x)

I liked the hybrid faces, but then, my fursona is a hybrid as well. :P

rufflenecks

Same price on full release! You'll need to go to your settings and enable "adult content" or "sexual content" (I don't remember what it is called now!). The link in the Patreon post should take you to the Steam page, and you can then sign in on browser ^^

rufflenecks

Hello! Patreon shows your total lifetime pledge(s) at 8 usd; The threshold for receiving a Steam key is 30 usd ^^

rufflenecks

Sadly no, but you can PM me the written information it requires and I can manually add it to the key requests ^^

Anonymous

Got it! Thanks! :D

rufflenecks

Thank you! I hope you get a more oomphy computer at some point! x)

rufflenecks

You've been sent a key a while ago, I'll copy it to you in private message

rufflenecks

It did, but I'll process them in batches ^^

rufflenecks

Heya! You only need the code for a week or two after the release, and then you can just switch branches for the build ^^

rufflenecks

Not anymore I'm afraid. It was phased out quite a while ago ^^

Unless there's some fine print i didn't read somewhere, but so far I haven't had anyone point anything out to me lol
