Oh man this story just keeps getting better and better! I think having these episodes with just plot are really nice and gives you the chance to provide more backstory to the plot, and it really is helping explain so much about AA. I also love how this story hasn’t been linear, the listener is kinda kept in the dark about many aspects of AA, but everything is slowly revealed over the course of the series and especially with these backstories. The pacing in this story is excellent and I really think you struck a perfect balance with sex and plot with this series I seriously cannot wait for the analysis for this episode because the sound design is just incredible! (she says about every episode) but seriously though, especially when The Lady shows up, everything about that scene is so perfectly chilling, and the stuttering was really creative and adds another layer of discomfort/uneasiness when listening to them talk. I felt my heart racing and was genuinely scared when they were talking to Jakob and took over his brain because I could picture it all so clearly. (Speaking of Jakob, so you’re really just gonna break mine and Ian’s hearts with the introduction of this character and his relationship with Rupert? Ok, I see how it is… anyway) After The Lady took over Jakob’s brain, I imagine that Rupert immediately sensed something was wrong before he even spoke because I could picture this unhinged look in his eyes- you know that Classic Villain Stare where you can tell there’s no emotions behind those eyes? Very chilling. But I imagine it must be so fun to play a villain!

I think it’s really a testament to your storytelling and your talent with sound design that I can picture these scenes in my head so clearly, that these stories can draw out emotions in me just like shows or movies, even with no visuals. I’ve been thinking about audio as a media form recently, and it’s advantages and disadvantages compared to video/film. With audio, I think the challenge lies in being detailed enough to make the scene easy to imagine, and you do a wonderful job of “showing rather than telling” with immersive sound design rather than exposition/narration. But imagination is also the beauty of this medium- the stories manifest and resonate with each of us in different ways; isn’t it wild but also really cool to think about how the way you picture these characters you created could be so different from what listeners imagine? There’s a sort of… fluidity to this medium that just makes my head spin when I think about it on a large scale but is ultimately what makes this so special. Thank you for this episode and this whole incredible story 🤍

It's funny you mention the idea of the image in ones mind being different from others'. To be honest I have no idea what any of these characters look like. Never really even considered it. But I'm glad I didn't. Because that's not important. I do believe that having the listener be able to see themself in the story is so important, but I also cherish the thought that each of you gets to see your own version of this story, these characters, and this world. It's so cool to know that everyone that enjoys my work gets to make it their own in their imagination. 🥰💕
