Hello everyone!

(Quick info: I'm working on several ambiences packs that should be released this week. We'll also have some Sci-Fi content this month!)

We have a very important question for you. On Patreon, we set a special goal at 3700$ : We would hire a composer for SFX specifically.

The thing is: we stand at 3699$ at the moment, so we will have to take a decision soon. We need you for that decision.

Definition. SFX are one-shot sound effects, such as the sound of an explosion, a spell, a monster dying, a magical sword swoosh, etc.

Composing SFX is really exciting. It's probably part of the job I love the most. However, it's very much time consuming, that's why I can't share more than 5 to 10 SFX per month.

If we want to grow in that direction, we'll have to add another member to the team. Of course, the idea of hiring another person sounds great to me, but I want to make sure it has value to you. Hiring isn't a mundane occurrence. We are a small company and, as you can guess, a 50% increase in the size of the composers team has a noticeable impact on the budget.

The objective would be to increase the number of SFX composed monthly from 5-10 to, at least, 30. It would also increase the diversity of the sound effects, and possibly their quality.

For the moment, we only share the SFXs with 10$ Patrons (Guardians and higher). We do not intend to change that, at the moment.

Please vote and tell us what you think about all of that.

Thanks for reading that post and for the amazing support you show us.

We are looking forward to your answers.

The issue is that for tabletop DMs, there is just too much to do to add in micromanaging individual SFX. I have used some build-your-own soundboards before and those can be helpful because of how many SFX i can access at once, but I rarely need it because of how much else is often going on. I barely have time to sort through my massive list of music tracks to find just one appropriate BGM track before a session.

As you probably already know from my past comments and feedback, this is a huge area of interest for me. I'm going to piggyback on some of the other comments here and provide some additional points of view to consider: Soundpad/board: tl;dr: I would recommend not spending your time/$ developing your own interface yet. As Sebastian Will and Ben Fisher mentioned, using SFX when running a session can be tedious and time consuming to set up and to access during the game - the latter which can break immersion rather than add to it as you take time fumbling around to find the right SFX to play at a key moment. However, there are many options for creating your own soundpad/board, all with the pros and cons. Syrinscape (Shane Zuspan pointed it out) is diverse and has a great interface, but is rather expensive IMO. Tabletop Audio's Soundpad is decent, but fairly limited (recently, you can create custom sound pads, but each is limited to 40 sounds). RPG Sounds (Kaitlin Nicole pointed it out) is currently free (with add-on sound packs to purchase) to give you a local, customizable interface, but I found it a little clunky and limiting for my needs (still a good option I suggest everyone test out to see if it fits their needs). And then there are a wide range of hardware options (soundpads, mixers, etc.) with an equally wide range of options and prices (reasonable starter units in the low $100's to the audio nerd units in the $1000's). VTT usage: tl;dr: I'm looking for a wide range of SFX I can trigger (manually or programatically) on a map in a VTT. Most of the options listed above fall short for VTT usage when you have remote players. There are some methods, depending on your preferred apps and VTT, but I haven't found a single beginner-friendly option yet. Almost all have additional apps/installation/setup that I would title 'workarounds' at best. IMO, FoundryVTT (with modules) is the best for my needs, allowing me to create triggers for sound effects on the map. I can trigger sounds for spell effects, traps, objects (doors, chests, etc.), environmental things (like the rush of water filling a room, steam coming from a vent, floor collapsing, etc.), etc...the possibilities are numerous. Hybrid: I personally like to run in-person games with the option to use tactile features like mini's and scatter terrain while displaying a digital map on an HD screen laid flat. I can then trigger SFX via the VTT and have a soundpad set up for other expected and unexpected SFX during a session. Tier options: I've been at the $15 Sage tier for a few months and honestly it feels a little light on value, so I have been considering going back to the $10 Guardian tier. Thinking of things from the perspective of your business, my suggestion would be to keep the current ~10 SFX/month for the Guardian tier (which I feel provides a good value for that tier), and offer the additional SFX on the Sage tier (which I feel adds some needed value for that tier). Additionally, you can start building themed sound packs (as Damian the DM suggested) for an additional revenue stream on various sites you're already familiar with. You can get additional ideas for SFX packs from the sites previously mentioned, Battlebards, and others including normal SFX sites. Voice/dialog SFX: I used to think having some short voice/dialog SFX (NPCs of various races, etc.) would be great, but I rarely find them useful because there's almost always something said in that dialog that doesn't fit my scenario well. If you go down this road, my suggestion would be to keep them along the lines of 'unintelligible conversation' used for ambience, or similarly, unintelligible 'monster' voices/expressions (calm, angry, afraid, etc.). If you made it through all that, you get the patience award. Thanks for listening to and considering my feedback. Cheers! :)

Just want to make you aware of another soundboard meant for use with discord, but made better if you have a stream deck is Kenku FM.

Thanks for the tip man! It looks pretty robust from just a cursory glance. I'm going to check this one out for sure. Do you happen to know if there is support for S3 storage integration?

MichaelGhelfi

I do agree and I understand your point. SFXs are hit or miss with DMs. I do love them but it's hard to manage without proper interface. It almost always takes quite some time to manage.

That I am not sure about. Partially because all my media is already hosted on my PC.

I looked on their site and there was no mention, so probably not, but I thought you might know for sure since you're using it. My whole library is currently local as well, but I'm looking to copy much of it to an S3 for use with FoundryVTT for as-needed remote play.
