For the curious, here is a version of that last piece without the normal pass lighting/detail emphasis. The expression is far less readable, and the book doesn't stand out at all. Not to mention the squishiness on the paw. <w<

I want to make a more in-depth post about this trick, but in case I won't be able to find the time, this shows you HOW awesome it is. XD

Wow there's an excruciating amount of detail that gets lost without that extra umph. That back light on the paw just swallows up those appendages and it is very hard to see where one part end and the other begins. And you are correct on the face as well. Her eye almost looks like she's looking off into a different direction without that tiny bit of glare from the normal map. Oh the joys of lighting.

IKR, I'm never not using this technique again! I'm still debating whether or not to use it for Anza, as it slows me down a bit, but I'm doing it for the upcoming episode to test the water. Maybe I'll just use it when it's absolutely necessary, but I'm definitely not going to disregard it in regular artwork! :D
