Today I've found out that there is a new AMD CPU that I can get - Ryzen 7 1800X. Then I've found out that it's using the new AM4 socket, so if I want it, I'd have to get a new motherboard - Asus CROSSHAIR VI HERO. That motherboard supports up to 64 gb of RAM, so obviously I'd have to get all that too - Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 (I may have to do more research and find something else, but I need 4x16gb sticks, and these are available in this configuration, and they're supposedly good).

So basically, I've accidentally planned my next workstation upgrade JUBILATIONS MAXIMUM HYPE

Now, for some details.

The CPU, with its 8 cores and 16 threads at 4gHz (turbo), will be around 50-60% faster than my current one. I have 32gb of RAM, so that'll get doubled. The CPU also draws less juice than my FX-8370 - 125W to 95W. This also means less heat. While I kinda want a better cooler, I'm 90% sure I don't need it. XD

What this all amounts to?

Shorter render times at the usual (or sometimes higher) quality, but also much finer fur, and denser tessellation when needed. Or stuff like more characters in one artwork ALTHOUGH I WOULD RATHER NOT LOL

If everything goes well, I'm expecting to easily do the entire upgrade around March 2018.

EXCITING AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

THANK YOU EVERYBODY THIS IS ALL THANKS TO YOU THANK YOU <3

There are some desktop Intel x99 motherboards that support up to 256GB ram. Just have to research into it. A friend of mine has one and 256GB ram with it. I would just remind you to do your "due diligence". Ram compatibility with AM4 systems is actually a -BIG DEAL- and not all ram will work with am4 just because it's ddr4. Which ever motherboard you decide to get, take a moment and go to the manufacturer's website, download the manual and look at the ram section. Make sure the ram you want to buy matches their list of supported ram modules down to the exact model #. Some motherboard makers release a separate "Memory QVL" List. Look for that too. Either in the manual or QVL list, all motherboard makers publish a supported ram list somewhere.

I wish I knew what any of this means

Also however.. do pause and take a moment and try to find some AMD Threadripper reviews. Before you go spend this kind of money you could potentially end up with a lot more cores & threads for your money. AMD threadripper literally just launched yesterday, Friday. EDIT: Max spec AMD Threadripper CPU is up to 16 cores, 32 threads. I could guess your rendering would -fly- with something like that.

Woah, I was not aware of compatibility issues, thanks for the heads-up! Also I'm sticking to AMDs right now; not switching to Intel just for more RAM than I actually need. XD 256gb is impressive tho.

I've just read up on Threadrippers, and holy crap, those things are monstrous. XD SO MUCH WANT, but I'm afraid that'll be out of my range for a while more. BUT MAYBE NOT, since it'll still be a few months before I can do this upgrade. The biggest problem is that Threadrippers have their own socket, and I bet the motherboards are stupidly expensive as well. Then I'll need a different cooler, and I don't even know how much power that thing consumes, so I don't know if I'll need a stupidly expensive liquid cooler or an air cooler. Also those CPUs are not yet widely available in poland. XD So as things and my knowledge stands right now, I think I'll stick to that Ryzen 7 plan. But we'll see! Either way, thanks for all your help!

FUR! I would love to see more fur on some of your chars

Fur has become possible after the first upgrade (my upcoming eligible characters will always have fur), but after this upcoming one it will be of much higher quality. C:
