It's S&F Extra time! Here's a behind-the-scenes look at what I worked on last month.

In the gallery above, you'll find the final version of each piece, as well as some animated GIFs of how some of them came together.  And down here, I'll provide some info about each one!

2022
I had a lot of fun making this pastiche of old VHS box art! I've included two process GIFs in the gallery above: one that shows the making of the art, and one that shows how I transplanted it onto a (relatively) photorealistic VHS box.

I didn't have a blank VHS box handy to photograph, so I actually used a blank book - a "dummy" copy that I was sent during the making of one of my S&F books. I just cropped the photo of the book into the approximate shape of a VHS box and drew in the shape of the black tape on top. Using the photo as a base is just a quick and easy way to get a base box image with the right texture and lighting. I've mocked up many S&F book covers this way, too!

Conscience Bat
This recent comic was an interesting experiment in minimalist pencilling. In the process GIF above, you'll see the pencils for this comic were extremely rough... something that I can honestly only get away with when drawing extremely cartoony characters that are well inside my comfort zone.

Christmas Dogs
My fiance Jesi and I drew this art to use for our family Christmas card last month! The art features our two dogs, Dipper and Poppy. Jesi drew the art inside the snowglobe, while I handled the outside artwork and colours. A true family collabo! In the gallery above, you'll find a making-of GIF as well as some photos of the real-life Dipper and Poppy.

Once Piece Animals
As some of you may remember, I have a regular commissioner who likes to get me to draw "Spider-Ham" style versions of various superheroes that didn't appear in the original Spider-Ham comics. But this time around, we left the Marvel universe to tackle a quartet of One Piece characters! These commissions are always an interesting challenge, especially when the animal choices are tricky stuff like fish! But I like how this one turned out. You'll find a photo of the original art in the gallery above, alongside this edited version!

Dev and Jess
I originally posted a sketch of this commission in the November S&F Extra, but here it is all done! (Saucy Hippo backers will also remember this art, as it was part of a larger set of pieces that I've posted on there.) You'll find the making-of GIF in the gallery above. Lots of fun lighting in this one!

Thanks, everyone!
