It seems that my last update about my computer was a little confusing. I still wanted to do some more testing for a while longer before I gave all of you the details, but I also don't want people misinformed. :P

If you have read any of my recent updates, then you know that my computer has been a little unstable recently. I priced out a new computer, and it was $5,000.00. That is way more than I wanted to spend, but there is no sense buying a whole new system unless it's going to do what I need it to. Like, a $3,000.00 system would not really be much more powerful than what I am running now. It'd just be newer.

What's worse is that figure does not include the RAID that I want installed. I need a lot of storage and I need it to be reliable. This is a work computer after all. I need it to be fast too, so I want the RAID to be comprised of SSDs. After doing some reading, it was suggested that SSDs should be setup in a RAID 10 scenario when you are writing data to the drives on a regular basis - which I believe I do.

In order to setup a decent sized RAID 10, so that I don't run out of room, I'd need ten SSDs. Ignoring the cost of a case that could even hold that many SSDs, that's another $3,000.00 or more just for the storage setup that I want.

So we are really talking closer to like $10k for the computer that I think I need to really do the job I want to do.

Well if $5k is too much, then obviously $10k is right out! :D

After some thought, I decided to purchase a new GPU. This was upsetting, as I just bought my RTX 3060 like a year ago. The Video Card that I chose was a RTX 4070 Ti Super - damn if that isn't a mouthful! :P

This card cost just over $1,000.00...

I'm not saying that to brag. This was a lot of money to me! This was not an easy choice. This is money that I had no plans to spend this year.

I'm also not whining btw, so don't feel sorry for me. That is also not what I want. :)

Ultimately, I am just trying to keep all of you informed on what's going on.

Anyway, that is the route that I decided to go. I didn't feel that my system was stable enough under the current setup. And if it's not stable, then I am risking losing everything!  O_O

So far the new card has made a world of difference, which is great! I removed both my RTX 3060 and my old GTX 1080 Ti. The only card in my system now is the RTX 4070 Ti Super. My system appears to be much more stable now. I immediately noticed a drop in temperatures. The new card runs at only 60 C, when the old cards were running over 80 C even if only one card was actually doing any rendering.

That is a massive difference! :D

I don't consider the issue resolved just yet. A few days of stability doesn't really prove anything, but I am hoping that this will address the issues I've been having and I won't have to invest any more money into computer stuff for a while.
