Hey guys- two questions! Currently my monthly paintings are always done traditionally, but I've been thinking that it could be a good way to get some practice in for digital arting and exploring my style with that medium. What would you think of that?

I wouldn't necessarily be switching them all to digital, just whatever I felt like doing more at the time. For an example of my latest digital art style, you can see here: (NSFW, and lightly Failed Hunt themed so be careful if that bothers you: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/45244570/ )

This might also open up other options, like doing single page comics when the suggestion feels appropriate, which I really truly hate doing traditionally but might not be so bad digitally.

Perhaps you don't much care as long as I'm making the filth, but I could maybe see how some people are here specifically for the watercolours. I'm curious what the community thinks, lemme know!

Question 2: I've been mulling over the idea of allowing suggestors to put forward ideas that involve their own characters, instead of just mine/generics. For a whole host of reasons I'm very much of two minds on this one, but the main one is just what you guys would feel about that: one the one hand I could see how you folks like my characters and what they get up to and want to see that, but on the other I could see maybe wanting to see some more variety in who I draw each month.

It's just a thing I'm thinking about so no promises either way, but if you have thoughts on the matter I'd love to hear 'em!

Q1: do what you feel! The you-ness is the important part :3. Q2: it seems like you have a pretty good variety of characters. Using them repeatedly gives them more life, and makes the work 100% yours.

Disappointed Frieza

Sounds like a neat idea for both the digital stuff and the suggestions.

I like the idea of digital art monthly drawings/paintings. Although I really like your traditional style, it would be awesome to see some one-shot comic stuff like you mentioned. As for the other characters? I’m split, but it’d be cool to see your style in a higher variety of characters

I like the idea of digital paintings, but I really hope you can still mix it up with watercolor every once in awhile. Then again, CSP has really cool watercolor brushes...;)

For the characters thing, the only problem I can see is that you might get the polls clogged up with "I want [Bob] getting milked mercilessly" and then someone else is like, but wait, I want my character in that position: "I want [Fred] getting mercilessly". IDK. The polls are brutal enough already; you might get some hurt feelings here. Ultimately it's up to you. I just like seeing people milked. I mean uh. I like seeing your drawings. Yes. That's what I meant to type. Minor typo. Keys are like right next to each other you know? Also I like seeing some Ruaidri-ness in the drawings instead of it turning into "random chance to get a commission from Ruaidri depending on how the polls go this month"

A1: Go for it! I think just pick the medium that you find easier or better (results wise) what you're trying to achieve with a piece, you already are doing a fair bit of the digital stuff already with the animations after all A2: I'd say you could either open for background cameos, or you could do a form submission with what kind of scene they would be fine with being part of, and then you can pick from the pool when you do new art?

Fal Chavamee

I don't see a problem trying digital art. Go for it. And I think it's a cool idea to allow people to involve their own characters in your art. I've go a couple of story characters that I'd love to see brought to life.

Eddie SanHusky

The watercolors are something I'd hate to see go away, but either way, I love everything you do, and ultimately, I'm probably just here for the filth, so experiment away! XD As for characters, random cameos would be good to see, but I love your menagerie, so once again, either way is a win, as long as there is filth!

ruaidri

Yeah, all those things are a majority of the "host of reasons" I mentioned in the post, hah. I'm a little worried it would just become a non-stop parade of "draw me draw me!" which could turn boring in a different way. I'm definitely very dubious on this one, but I figured I'd get people's thoughts on it anyway since I'm already making a questions post!

ruaidri

Actually, having a pool of characters for use in backgrounds whenever it comes out strikes me as a neat idea for it's own tier or something. That could be fun!

ruaidri

I don't think they'd be going away entirely, I just wouldn't mind having the option to follow whatever my whims are on a given day. :P

I think digital as part of the rotation is a wonderful idea. I also like the idea of letting the monthly painting experiment with different formats, like a comic, or some other bit of interestingness that caches your fancy. I think the idea of opening up to different characters... is a complicated idea. The suggestions put forth by several folks of having character tucked away in the background for cameos is a great compromise!

Anonymous

I like the idea! Just watch out for people getting butthurt if their characters aren't chosen. You should also be extremely careful about how it's worded. I'll shoot you a message why just in case.

Bloudin Ruo

Obviously there's bias in me towards the first question, but you already know my stance: Do what you want, and I'll be here :3 As for the second question, definitely think that opening the suggestions to personal characters is a big invitation for problems. HOWEVER, having a tier reward with a 'character pool' that you can pick and choose from for background characters, and maybe a higher tier one for main characters in open-ended suggestions (might be a good thing to add to the $25 tier?) that, and let me be clear, you and you alone have control over. However you want to do that is fine; random, dice roll, weighted picks, whatever tickles your fancy, etc., but the method should be hidden so that people don't get sour over the outcomes. You'd probably have to make a form that gets sent out to everyone in that tier with contact and character information, and maybe limit the amount of characters in the pool so it doesn't get too diluted. But it would certainly be a good reward addition, if done properly!

Anonymous

I think the method has to be explicitly (publicly stated) as "what I, as the creator, decided I liked the best". Anything else leaves open the possibility of random choice...and that runs afoul of certain terms of service and possibly local laws regulating chance and finance. (Not linking to it directly but it shouldn't be too hard to find.) Whether or not that prevents the butthurt is an open question. You know how people get. :(

Q1: Heck yeah. If you think you need more hours doing digital, I'd be okay sponsoring it (also if it means you'll stop running up the score for deer :P). This does make not being able to post the original resolution work somewhere more of a bugbear though, unless you're willing to do the double upload trick on FA and just make original resolution available to all? Q2: I don't really have a stake in this, but one thing to consider is that you will probably have to link refsheets for all the suggestor characters, which voters will have to click through, or upload some kind of composite image, or ask for some kind of summary (but then that opens up a whole other can of worms about character limits). Personally, I vote whenever the poll is put up because otherwise I'll forget, and I'm not always in a place where I can click on link walls.

Caerdwyn

I've always really liked your watercolor style. It's one of the things that make your art distinctive.

Bloudin Ruo

Yeah exactly, true random is generally not very good to a group of people. Weighted random wouldn't be too bad (once picked, won't get picked again until everyone has been picked once, etc.) but there's issues with that, too. If someone doesn't like what they were picked for, maybe they can decline, but if they're the last remaining one to get picked (say, everyone else has been picked once and they haven't, or if they've declined before) then they'd have to accept or relinquish their chance so that everyone else can contend again. Complicated, but could work. The "I pick what I like as the creator" is good but still opens up potential dislike from patrons. What if they never get picked, but a certain type of character gets picked a lot? From Ru's point of view, wouldn't that create guilty incentive to pick people who haven't been picked yet, even if the character isn't a good fit? It's a hard can of worms, ha.

Mixing it up between traditional and digital is cool. I also like the idea of including other people's characters that you find interesting. You have done YCH things before and I think that would be the easiest way to do that.

Anonymous

I think you misunderstand me :P You have to be very careful because some regions consider any form of money plus chance to be g ambling. It's against Patreon T OS unless the reward decision rests with the creator's judgement and not any form of chance. Alternative idea would be just more YCHes open to the public :P

Bloudin Ruo

I did understand that your comment was more about different regions' definitions of gambling and Patreon's interpretation of it (for now, you know how they are), I just meant that also non-weighted random wouldn't be great given the amount of people who would want to participate. Wanted it to be an addition to your point but I didn't word that well, my bad! I don't know if there's a perfect solution. Even artist's choice + weighted picks wouldn't solve all the problems, but it might be the best option for a character pool reward?

Variety is good. At the end of the day, I'm of the mind you should do the art style that you enjoy doing, as all of your styles are enjoyable to view! Always a good idea to challenge yourself, too, of course. And you know full well I'm happy to offer up cheetah with your many lovely characters and will happily pay for the privilage, too!

Anonymous

I think ya can always let people suggest with the theme what medium you use. Like failed hunt, traditional or something ya know? I think letting people request characters is like ya said a mixed bag of nuts. I honestly would love to request that some time but at the same time people might get weird about it. It's not a decision I think we can unbiasedly help you with.

Another tier that can suggest OC's could be something.

ruaidri

No worries, watercolours won't be going away permanently or anything! I just would like a little more freedom to explore is all. :3 Also, for what it's worth I'll soon be jumping back into my commission queue which means I'll be posting all kinds of watercolours in the near future!

Anonymous

I think exploring digital art is a great idea! If anything, it'll let you have a change of pace and keep things fresh on your end! As for allowing OC submissions, it's something to try out but I fully understand your hesitation. It might lead to everyone only voting for themselves and may lead to some awkward circumstance. Having a pool of characters to choose from like you've been doing is a smart idea. I'd say try it out for a month or two and see where it goes!

Anonymous

Your watercolors are great but I joined your Patreon because of the 3D, and you learned that by going out and exploring; always keep learning!

Anonymous

Your watercolors are amazing and I love them, but so so is all your art. So do what you want, and I look forward to seeing what it is. If you want people to have a say over time you could specify traditional or digital fir different suggestions in the polls. As for characters, it sounds fun, but also an invitation for trouble. The character pool idea sounds better to me. Or perhaps suggestions need to address your characters, but people can add an option of their own character..? Either way, as long as you're happy with what you get to paint I'm sure I'll enjoy it anyway.

I dunno, there's so many different laws in different countries, the policy probably won't change anytime soon. It's easier (and cheaper) for them to just blanket ban it. Would be nice though! Realistically I don't think there's any good way to do it that can do much about people getting butthurt. Closest I can think of is how Arh runs their patreon, where people stay in a tier for X months and get guaranteed a pic at the end (so it's a queue and not a random chance). But the slots are limited and go fast, FCFS, when someone leaves the tier, which isn't very often. So there's a lot of angst there too from people that want in but can't. After a point there's just no good way to do it when the supply is so much more limited than the demand. :(

Simon Tesla

Personally all for seeing your digital work more if you feel like doing that. As far as using other people's characters, I'd be very explicit about how you see the process of picking a character working, especially if it's tied to a patreon reward, but I don't mind the idea of doing it if you'd want.

Anonymous

Your watercolour art is what lead me to discovering your work. I think traditional art has that elusive something in it more often than digital works, and also there aren't a whole lot of good NSFW artists that do traditional. I'm not against some digital monthly paintings but I'd like watercolour ones more. No preference on the second question.
