The English speaking producer is Joe Hahn from Linkin Park. I absolutely love Super Band! I wish I could find all the episodes subbed somewhere to rewatch it…

yay, perfect lunch watching, thank you! btw, you do sorta know lee nau, the frontman/pianist in the second round, he is the pianist in purple rain :) rly glad you enjoyed it, i wanted you to get a better feel for what the show was actually like beyond the performances. you pretty much picked up the vibe! no drama, no long waits for results, the epitome of the phrase "the real prize is the friends you make along the way" lol and frontmen could (in those first few rounds) choose from any of the non-frontmen members. you could choose the number of members as well so nau only chose 2 also, i think the constant of superband fans is that every one of us would die to protect ha hyunsang, lol. + some of the songs are on spotify. 1000x is! they are just the audio direct from the episodes. just look up JTBC SuperBand and you'll see the episode albums superband 2 is indeed airing right now :)

Yes! 1000x is possibly my favorite performance from Superband and is my most replayed song on my Spotify. Hyunsang was so down and worried because he had lost in previous rounds, and just the round before, every member of his team was eliminated except for him. So glad you got to see it in the context of the actual show. Thanks Beks for recommending it! Chansol from the Skyfall performance did a duet with Woosung of Sign of the Times that is also on Spotify.

I'll Team doing their best to get Hyunsang's first win and their 1000x performance will always be one of my favorite Superband moments. Thank you Beks for choosing this particular clip! I'm glad you finally get to see how the show is conducted and it's also a great introduction to how Hoppipolla was formed on the show. I love that we also get to see I'll's traits as a leader/frontman here. He's very encouraging towards his members, especially Hyunsang who is very shy, and always asks them and hears them out for their ideas and opinions. And yes, the English-speaking producer/judge is indeed Joe Hahn of Linkin Park and he loves Hoppipolla's combination a lot. He keeps on praising them in every round they perform together. The Skyfall performance is also one of my favorites from the show. Their team is such a great combination too and Minjae punching the cymbal will always be iconic. Great reaction as always!

Ah, I actually like that song a lot! I was like "this is the dude from that british boy band???"

I'll exclude spoilers from my descriptions in the future! I'm just so hyped about you discovering Superband that I want to tell you everything. Minjae is my favorite drummer on this show. He was hitting so hard with those mallets, he almost knocked over the stand for his mid tom during Skyfall. Just for perspective, there are 67 performances on Superband season 1, according to the Wikipedia list. You've seen 5. You haven't even seen the most mind-blowing ones yet, I promise you. You referred to the choosing process for those ad-hoc bands as "pickup bands," and that's correct. The producers chose the "frontmen" in each round, and the frontmen chose the bands out of the rest of the musicians. It's like 8th grade pickup basketball in gym class, with all the awkwardness. It's so delicious and relatable. There's some vocalists you haven't heard yet, and the main one is Kevin Oh. We'll include him in a future month, but there's so much to pick from! We still have to return to your favorite from Royals, Issac Hong. And finally, the vocalist from the Skyfall performance, Lee Chansol, finally ended up in a band, Bandage, with Play M Entertainment (Apink, Victon, Weeekly). i have mixed feelings about Bandage. I think the leather jacket baller Chansol is the best and most honest version, but Bandage is a little too... nice. We'll see.

Oh, and I think you answered my question about why JTBC has never put English subtitles on Superband. They could definitely afford it. I'm an entertainment lawyer, and I am pretty sure they only licensed those songs for Korean broadcast. There's tons of music in there, including the covers and the transition music (you noticed "Paint It Black" by the Rolling Stones, for example). JTBC probably got a deal for just Korean broadcast, not knowing the show would be popular internationally, and they can't afford to expand the licensing. So they took down the Youtube videos of the covers and kept it Korean language only. Blame the lawyers. They suck.

I loved these performances, I am so sad there are no completed subs, I have 4 episodes on my laptop for almost a year now... and I hate it because they could at least get some international recognition, I would love to watch this show properly.. I also think bands like Day6 have a boost from being from a company that can handle losses and can push them for a longer period of time, along with the name recognition? I think it's similar to current pop, not much request for rock music in the mainstream, which is really sad. If you compare Day6 sales to other JYP groups, it is really a lot less (but I think digitals are doing really well - now). They started getting recognition in like 2018, and got a first win in 2019, almost 4y after debut. This is a band from one of the big 3(4) with in build support and idol looks, so I am not shocked about the lack of support for kbands. It's a crime though.
